Rotor Install now sounds like it's loose... HELP PLEASE!!

    I installed new rotors and when ever i go over bumps (under 55mph) it sounds like my rotors are loose, like they're not tightly secured (sounds like metal clanking). When i'm on the freeway, going above 60mph it sounds fine. but wen i am pressing on the brakes and go over bumps, it doesn't make the sound either, only at low speeds and not braking. Any help? I really don't know what the problem is. It could be loose but if it's loose, how come it doesn't do this at high speeds or when i'm braking? any help would be great. Thanks

    not sure about high speeds, but when you are braking the pads are grabbing the rotor which stops it from beign able to move as freely.. thats my .02

    if your actual rotors are moving and clanking thats probobly not good since the thing holding it on is the wheel. if the rotor is moving, then your wheel is not tight and thats a problem

    if his lugs were that loose that the rotor was able to move he'd have bigger problems than a clinking noise

    I made sure they were tight. What's the best way to tighten them? take the wheel off, pound the rotor in so it's straight in tight then mount the wheel up and tighten them while on jack stands?

    did u torque them to 75?

    oh boy, get those to a local tire shop quick and have them torque them to the rgiht specs, which i believe is 75. If your rotor is actually moving i'm surpirsed you havent snapped your studs yet.

    Um, or its your pads that are rattling around. Did you use shims on your new pads?

    it is NOT uncommon for rotors to make some noise when you first install them...I damn near had a heartattack with mine. After 10-15miles it went away...how long ago did you do it?

    Don't be so over dramatic. Just use your crappy tire iron that came with the car and give it a good go. That should be fine, you won't over tighten them and you won't under tighten them.

    I actually just installed some rotors today. Bedded them in with the new pads and everything is great.

    I'd maybe double check to make sure your caliper bolts are nicely tightened and then if you're really desperate, take a wrench and just make sure your top-hats are good and snug. Those can get loose sometimes and clunk a bit.

    Well, my .02 on the whole deal. If your wheels/rotors are loose enough to hear the rotor rattle, you might as well look for new rims. There is no way the rim can be loose enough to let the rotor rattle and not destroy the rim. My guess is that if you installed new pads, you didn't get the correct pads, or you didn't install the shims correctly. You should be able to jack up the car and spin the wheels by hand and see where the noise is coming from. Is it a 2 piece rotor?? What kinda of rotors?? Did you install new pads?? did you use new shims??

    Sounds like loose pads. I haven't heard loose pads in a car but often times bikes will have loose front pads. Seems like the R6s are known pretty well for it.

    I got him the pads (endless) and SS lines...Whose doing your install Nit? The fronts are exact fit, the rear pads were 50/50 because of the production date of your WRX. 03 models is a tricky one...I got one coming in for u. I assume you are talk'in about the Front brakes...I'd bring it to someone to have checked out. Russ mentioned about the shims I would look into that...The pads u got for the front should fit perfectly...

    I agree with bummpy on the caliper bolts. I had this happen on my daughters saturn...I felt like a moron.

    I wasnt being over dramatic. you can use a tire iron and thats fine as a TEMPORARY fix. you cannot get a good sense of what is too tight and what is too loose. If you over torque them with the tire iron over time the studs can stretch and break. Under tighten them and there is a chance that over time with the minnesota pothole roads we have, it will be jarred loose. I'm not saying that its imperative to get them exactly right but i would certainly like to know that my wheels are torqued right while i'm going 80mph on the freeway. They dont just throw on torque specs fo the fun of it, especially on wheels....

    thanks for all the replies guys, i think it is the shim, i made a diff. post and not knowing this is still going on with the vid of what's wrong. Thanks

    You're going to have a higher chance of having the tire gorillas over torque your lugs while using the impact wrench at your local tire installer than the chance that they'll actually torque them to anything remotely at spec.

    Torque specs are there for liability reasons and as a rough guide more so than anything else. Do I wan't to torque my lugs on to the proper spec? You bet. Am I going to loose any sleep that I used the factory tire iron to get them good and snug because I didn't have a torque wrench sitting around... nope.
