I'm leaving my calipers and rotors on the car for another year or so and I'd like to bring the metal back to life by removing the surface rust. Anyone had any luck with rust neutralizer products? I'm looking for recommendations. Preferably something I can use on the parts while they're still bolted on. Thanks in advance!
The only thing I can think of to use while the parts are still on the car would be a gel type rust converter. Unfortunately, I don't know of any off-hand. But if you do want to take the parts off, you can get Evapo-Rust from O'Reilly Auto. I've used it on seized moped chains and brought them back to life as well as bolts and brackets and the like. It works very well. If you're trying to save some money though, you can always pour a little white vinegar on the parts and scrub a bit.
I believe these neutralizer products will turn surface rust into a black colored material that is meant to be painted over. If the whole part is not rusty, then this will leave a surface that is not all the same color. I do not know the durability of the product if it is not top-coated.
Por-15 it's awesome you can buy it either in a aerosol or in a liter paint can....seals rust in doesn't let it expand
It looks like it looked before it had rust (sometimes duller). If it has an extremely high amount of carbon (many tools) they turn a little blackish, but with a wire brush it comes off.
If you mean the Evapo-Rust, It leaves no coating on the part, but the instructions say to rinse off the part with water and coat it with something after using the Evapo-Rust, same thing with using the vinegar, you'll need to rinse it off and coat the metal otherwise it'll flash rust again.
