video cameras. The latest and greatest buys and why. It will spend some of it's life on the harness bar in my car in case that matters. Not looking to spend over $1200.

    Thanks

No one?? I suppose I could just head to best buy or Ultimate Electronics, but I know how sales people are. It'd be nice if someone knew about them here.

I would say with that kind of budget definitely go Hi-def. 3CCD is nice also, but both features in one camera may be $$$. For in-car stuff I would stick with tape, I have heard of problems with Hard Drive cameras shutting down to protect the drive due to the extreme motion. I wouldn't trust DVD either.

I got a Sony HDR-HC3 on eBay for ~$600 awhile ago, I love it. You can certainly spend more than that if you want, but I'm not sure you need to.

This is in-car video with the Sony of an autox run last spring. Warning, it is huge (130MB) and that is with the resolution cut in half and compressed. There are interlacing artifacts that are pretty noticeable on the cones due to the fast side-to-side motion, it may be possible to get rid of that but I haven't played with it a lot yet. You might want to look into a camera with progressive scan to help with that.

    Quicktime only right now, sorry.

    right-click, save Target as...

I'm not impressed with consumer HD equipment just yet. I think it'll be a year before we see proper HD camcorders that aren't just using various compression methods to fit HD on MiniDV. I would advise against dropping a lot of money on that just yet.

You may be able to find a used Canon XL1 for that much. You can't go wrong with one of those for the price.
