Hey all...so I recently bought a 13 WRX and my wife hates it and is pushing for me to sell it. It's not really been all that family friendly(Car seats only fit with seats pushed way up) and we can only fit a stroller in the trunk and nothing else. Needless to say she's pushing me to buy something bigger and more family focused. I've only had it for a couple of months and it only has 1800 miles on it. I've installed a Pioneer DVD head unit and an infinity basslink. I also have sets of Summer stock tires with 300 miles on it and my winters have 1500 on them. I paid 27k for it with the Homelink, STi short throw and the all season mats. I owe 25,900 on it. If I were to sell it private party or trade it in, what do you think I could get if I included everything in the sale? There are no references since its so new, but carsoup is showing 2-3 year older models with 30k miles going retail for 25,500. Thanks to anyone who has any input...not really the way I wanted my first Subaru ownership to go...
Here's a better question: What can you get for your wife and kid? It sounds like your car is pretty much brand new, I would imagine with the stuff you have you can probably get 26k-27k private party. You likely won't get what you owe on a trade in, or you won't get much over what you owe. I don't think you'd be able to ask for more than sticker though. Good luck! Are you looking at a larger Subaru or something else?
What he said except I would sell the snows and dvd player separately. Should be able to get a grand or two from that (depending on what you have). btw, this... the situation you're describing right now... This is my nightmare.
Depend on the dealer you bought it from you might get lucky if you go back to them and buy something else. Did that with mine they paid me out of my loan and got me into a new one free and clear. If you do it soon you shouldn't have to pay all the taxes and other stuff again.
Yep, dealers love to upsell to a different car if they can. Because it gets written off as a sale either way. Plus, if it has that few miles on it, they can easily push it right back out the door to someone else. I'd give this a try first if you can. Otherwise, you may have trouble selling it off for what you owe as most people would see the difference between zero mile new, and very slightly used new, and pay the difference for the brand spanking new one. You are going to have a tough sell in that department.
Agreed, the best deal would probably be at the dealership where you bought it. They know the history (short as it is) on the vehicle and would love to put you in a Forester or Outback. The new Legacy's are nice.
More importantly, they're perfectly serviceable for family duty. Big back seat, reasonably big trunk. Wanna buy mine?
Thanks guys...My problem with the upsell part is I'm not really interested in any other Subaru vehicle. I don't mind the Forester XT but really my 2nd option when I was shopping cars was a Golf R or GTI depending on price. I think I might need to hang on to it to build some equity into it. I thought I could maybe get what I owe considering all the used ones that are several years old are still being posted for 24-25k with 20-30k miles on it.
Golf does not strike me as a solid family car that isn't going to piss off your wife... Are those significantly roomier on the inside than they look?
There are many guys on here with small children that have WRX's. A hatch would offer you a bit more cargo room for strollers and such. My Daughter was 3 when I bought my STI and I have had no issues what so ever with lack of room. Now one the other hand, my Wife still hates the car but she'll get over that at some point.
There are many guys that moved from an STi into something else due to size constraints as well. I think a lot of it has to do with preferred seating positions. With my 07 STi it was pretty close to what jtc411 is describing. The car seat had to go in the middle, and either side was very close or actually touching a front seat.
I don't know, maybe because I went from an extended cab pick up to a four door car. The car was an amazing upgrade in terms of ease.
Believe it or not they are. When we bought my wifes 2012 VW GLI we test drove one and the car seat fit in the back with no issues and the seat was back comfortably, and the cargo in the back was big enough to put a stroller in there, a small sub and some groceries. They are true grocery getters. I was in the market originally for the wrx wagon but morries told me they "never get them in" and i could order one and wait 3 months...I wasn't born patient so I bought the wrx sedan and its just been too small. My wife would NEVER let me buy another wrx even in wagon format lol...she thinks the stock exhaust is too loud!
The stock exhaust on the hatch is much quieter Car seat fits behind my seats fine, but my wife and I are of average height and don't mind the seats pretty far up. The hatch will fit a stroller plus some other stuff, but not a lot like a big SUV would.
I don't think you'll build much equity into it. Post it up here and on craigslist and see what happens. Don't cost nothing. Try some sound deadening stuff under the rear seat and trunk.
Does the sedan lose that much room for the WRX? In my 09 hatch I loaded up my wife, 5 yr old and 2 year old, with luggage and drove from CO to MN and back, more than once if I remember correctly.
I'm not sure of the back seat but in the wagon you at least have height in the cargo area. I literally can only fit a stroller in the trunk. We weren't even able to put our big suitcase in there with anything else. Maybe someone with a wagon can comment
You must have a HUGE stroller, either that or the 2013 trunk capacity is considerably smaller then that of the 2006 I have. I can fit an ice auger, a 5 gallon propane tank, a small heater, my ice rod bag, a vexilar, two 5 gallon buckets, and some other random items in my trunk. With a little extra room to spare.
I bought my '12 hatch last spring with a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old (now 3 and almost 6) and I've had no issues. The 4 of us (yes, I still have a wife) have taken it on weekend trips which can get a bit tight but she has a bigger car/CUV that we can use for that. For the 99% of the time it's just me or me and the boys or even all of us minus the luggage needed for a long trip, it works just fine. I will say that once you get past the newborn/infant stage and can get forward-facing car seats, it makes all the difference. I can see where a rear-facing seat would be tight in these cars. Plus, the need for bigger crap like strollers (especially the huge ones that hold the infant carriers) also goes away very soon. On the other hand, once a woman has made up her mind that she "hates" something, it's not bloody likely to change. Putting up with that wrath or resentment over a car may not be worth it but that's for you and your bride to decide. Regarding the Golf R, my brother has one and I cannot for the life of me believe that there is any more appreciable room in that car over mine. Granted, mine isn't a sedan. Also, the extra $8K+ that those things cost is hard to justify (in my opinion...I know the interior and materials are much nicer and it is very well screwed together.) Even my brother agrees it's not worth it. He lives in the sticks where the closest Subaru dealer is 90+ miles away. Otherwise, he'd have a WRX. Just so happens he has a VW dealer 20 miles away. And he's 45 years old! FWIW
This. OP, your cheapest option might be to find a sitter, take her to her favorite restaurant, give her lots of shiney things, and explain to her why you'd like her permission to keep the wrx. If you're lucky, she might lend you your balls back too... I ammend my previous statement... this is my nightmare.
LOL oh my dudes, this is hilarious. But the previous poster is right...when a wife makes up her mind she doesn't like something...you're out of luck. I've learned in my first few years of marriage, happy wife=happy life. The space of the WRX sedan is only a portion of what she doesn't like. For those that don't have a newer sedan, the trunks are not very deep and they lack height. If I put a full sized carseat holding stroller back there...thats the entire trunk. She hates how loud it is, she hates how fast it is, she hates the gas milage. She's finding plenty to ruin it for me. My biggest thing is I work from home...so the only leasure driving I get is with my family. So generally when we go somewhere we take her car and my car is getting very little use unless I have a rare errand by myself. As far as the Golf R, I probably wouldn't be in that range. I'd most likely opt for the GTI. I've always loved the WRX and if I were single this would be a non issue, but I'm married and have a paycheck boss, and a house boss and I need both to survive. According to nada clean trade in is just a little less than I owe and if I can find a good dealership with my extras I might be able to squeeze enough out of it unless someone on the board is interested in a practically brand new WRX for less than new
It's weird that you have car set issues. My daughter is 5 months old. I have her car seat in my car and never had to adjust either seat. I just put the seat in the middle. This also allows for more room for things in the trunk and the sides of the car seat. I can fit the stroller and necessary items in the hatch no problem. Granted I have a 09' hatch. As others have said. The hatch is fine for around town and daily trips. Weekend trips we take the wife's SUV.
Definitely a hatch thing. Just stop at the dealer or look at a friends. The trunk in the sedan is rediculous! I'm suprised that the stroller fits! lmao I know that Gridlocked(Ted) was having noise issues with his wagon as far as the kids were concerned. He remedied it tho. With the right exhaust and possibly a little sound deadening, it could be quite quiet! Either way, if the boss says "NO", then you are SOL. Take it back to where you purchased it and see what they'll do for you. If it was Morries Minnetonka, see Scott Putnam.
I don't think I'd have these issues in the hatch. When I was buying my sedan there was a sold hatch there and just looking at it there was a lot more useable room. In the Hatch, your back seat is it able to slide forward or backwards? or is it stationary? Not sure what the huge difference is between hatch and sedan but all I know is with my seat pushed up in a tight driving position my daughters carseat is pinned on my seat...which makes removing the car seat just as hard to tuck my hand under the car seat and pull the latch.
It was Morries Brooklyn Park. I went to Minnetonka first but the one they had on their site was sold. Glad I'm not the only one suprised at how small the trunk is!
No, the back seats don't slide. They are the same seats you have. I was under the impression that the cabin of the sedan and hatch had the same seat locations. If you put the car seat in the middle you may not have the issues you currently have with the driver's seat. I know my current setup allows me to move my seat around. EDIT: The passenger in my 2012 Explorer has less leg room with the car seat behind it then my passenger in the WRX with the car seat in the middle. Granted I can't put the car seat in the middle of the Explorer
The sedan trunk is actually deeper than the hatch, but it's not as tall. Strollers are really big these days and one full size one takes up most of the room behind the seats in the hatch. A full size car seat is quite a bit bigger than a carrier one that you would have an infant in. IMO, if the sedan isn't working, the hatch probably won't be all that much better. And I doubt a small VW will do any better. Sedan Hatch
^Oh yeah...you right Brian! She'll fit! The difference with the seats (as Ben stated) would be the same, but that is a substantial amount of cubic feet for cargo tho! True, many of the car seats do get bigger once you're out of the infant carrier type. The "convertible" seats for example are the worst when they're still rear-facing. These are what will protrude into the front seatbacks. It's when the child is over a year old and a certain weight (or whatever they're recommending this week) and you turn it around to front-facing, the problem with seat fitment goes away because the seat actually fits into the car's seat and doesn't encroach on the front seat's range of travel. I guess my point was that in a matter of months, many of the problems will go away on their own (seat fitment, obnoxious strollers, etc.). That still leaves the wife which is a much more complicated problem. Did I say problem? I mean a sweet, beautiful little challenge. (I've been married for 14 years.)
Exactly! LOL, Actually, that's Ralph Wolf in the avatar. Subtle differences but Ralph has a red nose and white eyes vs. Wile E's black nose and yellow eyes. Yes, I'm a geek.
I'm with Ben on this. I fail to see the benefit of the VW over what you currently have. Maybe if you were going to walk away with 10K and there was a small benefit for more space.... but breaking even or loosing money to buy something that is very similar in size doesn't make sense.
5th gen legacies have a lot of room and are so quiet you're likely to have problems the first week of driving it because you won't know when to shift. Just sayin... Once things cool off, you can always change things up exhaust-wise.
http://i.imgur.com/dMmQG.jpg A picture I found with someone and a car seat for a 2013 hachback wrx. Not much room. It was from this reddit post a while back that I was on. http://www.reddit.com/r/subaru/comments/165g9k/my_pregnant_wife_and_our_new_baby/ and ya...
That has to be one of the largest convertible seats you can buy and/or the front seats are all the way back. It looks like a Britax Marathon seat but it may be an older or different version than ours. I have a Britax Marathon (not in the center either) and the seat does not extend beyond the rear seat cushion. Kids legs hang comfortably behind the front seat. And I know there are even more compact seats than that out there.
From what I've seen the WRX doesn't depreciate on a level most cars do. Right now I could make my money back Private Party and with a very interested dealer I may break even on a trade in. I believe every month I make my lease payment my car's payoff amount should go down quicker than the depreciation with the little amount of driving I do along with the car's substaining value.
The benefit of the GTI is the backseat room. It's larger than the WRX and I wouldn't have a carseat right on top of my seat or my passenger seat. I would opt for a WRX hatch but the wife will not let that happen. She sees the bigger picture vs the "fun" picture as I see. She looks at 20mpg vs 28mpg mixed. She looks at car insurance being 90 a month on my car vs 60 with her GLI. She flat out told me "I'm embarrased of your car"...She was chatting with our neighbors one morning that I had just warmed up my car the night before and the neighbor thought her furnace was going out or something when it was just the grumble from my cold start in the WRX...to me, that made me chuckle cause thats funny...to her she got embarrased. Women I tell you In all honestly, WRX was my first choice and if I can't have the WRX the GTI was a close second.
Thanks everyone...I really appreciate all the input and support. I'm going to make my wife read this and hopefully she can weep for me too lol
The trunk in the sedans bumps up about half way back I'm guessing to cleatrsub frame and it eats up alot of useable trunk space. With some light mods you can get better gas mileage I get mid 20 still in the winter mixed highway/city. during the summer getting over 30 if I keep my foot out of it. But I know what you mean if the wife don't like it then she don't like it and not much you can do about it. looked at the golf R myself wasn't to impressed for what you pay. look at a GTI as well but I really wanted awd and was also suprised by their weight and again the price tag.
