Ok, so this is my first winter with the Suby and what I've began to notice is that eversince the weather has gotten colder, it's harder for me to shift my car into reverse. All the other gears are fine, but it's only reverse that has the issue. It just won't get in there and if I try to let up off the clutch to see if it catches, there is a grinding noise so I think the reverse synchro is a little screwy. Once I fiddle with it, I can finally push the shifter into reverse and it's fine. Just curious if anyone else has this issue or is there something else I should take a look at?

For some reason this usually works for me I put the car in 1st and let the clutch out a little. Then it will usually go into reverse fine...

The beauty of the subaru 5 speed.

Yea, sometimes just rocking the car by shifting back and forth in your seat while holding the clutch in and pulling back towards reverse works. It is definately more picky when it is cold.

Most cars do not have a synchro for reverse, and shifting is always harder in the cold. You might even have trouble shifting into first unless completely stopped. Now, if you say you have a heated garage and it never gets below 40 F, then I'd be worried.

Oh, and don't be worried if you smell gas now that it is cold. It's infamous, but non-life threatening.

hehe, yea I smell a bit of gas when its really cold out. As for the first gear shifts, I seem to be able to get into first at 20-25mph when most people complain that you have to be completely stopped.... Might just be my RS tranny.

I have a hard time shifting into first and reverse too. And going from 5th to 4th, too, now that I think about it. Quite annoying.

Yeah, cold and the gear box don't play well. I pretty much have issues with 1st and 2nd til it warms up. Reverse has never been an issue.

werd! I have to slow down alot in order to get it in second and prevent a mild crunch of the synchros. Then a few miles down the road it shifts like butter. I park outside though. Even the resistance from the cold wheel bearings and diffs make it interesting down the driveway but that stuff warms up a mile or two down the road also.

The original 5sp did this with subaru fluids and the FXT/BajaT trans i have now with uncle scottys cocktail does it. No big deal.

Scottys cocktail didn't help much for me, and it made my tranny WHINE like crazy at the ice race, I'm going back to normal 75w90 after winter.

Scottys cocktail didn't help this issue with my car either.

I found if I let off on the clutch just a little bit it'll slip in much nicer.

Yea, I was reading about that and was thinking of giving it a try, but now I know it won't help this issue :)

Same problem here with reverse and at times 1st. One of the 06 WRX reviews had a similar complaint on their test drive. I wonder what would happen if winter weather returns to the 30 below temps? I have had MTs in the past that in really cold temps you could barely move the shifter let alone get into gear. Lots of posts on NASIOC and other places with the same complaint. Where is SOA on this problem?

Hrm, my '06 behaves in the bitter cold just like any other manual car I've owned. Slushy gears till she warms up, and I can hardly get her into first unless I'm completely stopped. No problems at all with reverse, however.

SOA can't do anything. It's a 75 weight oil cold.

Thankfully we have "global warming" to help us out.

The Subi shifter is balkier in the cold compared to my old SHO, but even automatics shifter slower when first started. It's just more of an annoyance in the Subi. I'll get over it, though.

I usually shift it into any gear first, if I'm in a hurry, then I would shift into Reverse after that.

Otherwise, you can check your tranny fluid, or change your tranny fluid.

I usually just let the clutch out in neutral, blip the throttle and try putting it in reverse again. Occasionally, I'll have to give it a second blip, but that's pretty rare.

i dunno, but i just pop mine into reverse and leave, even on a cold start. sometimes it hesitates, just go back into neutral, let off clutch, clutch in again and shift. give that a try, works for me!
