I was thinking about buying a Forester XT, then decided to buy it, then declined, and now am deciding on buying it again because of a special they're giving me. Dealer will buy my GC Impreza RS from me.

My car has 103K miles. It's super hot, and was modified to my taste. It's very stealth-looking, too. It has never given me any major/costly problems. It will take ~2 more years to pay this baby off.

The new car: MY04 Forester XT. It has more room, is a manual, has 6K miles, looks OK in the design department, will cost a little more per month for another 6 years, and *the best part* is turbo!

    Help! [xx(]

If you don't mind me asking what is the dealership offering you? I was looking at a used '04 STI a few months ago and they were offering me quite a bit for my '99 RS. I guess it was all relative because they weren't going to budge on the price of the car.

Personally I like the FXT, it’s a great sleeper, most people don't know what they are much less that they have a turbo. You really can't beat the body style on the old GC's but if you feel like its time to move on I would say go for it.

Well it depends on what the dealer will give you versus what you could sell it for outright. Remember, the value of your trade-in is subtracted from the final selling price of the new car --- thus, you would have to pay $xxx LESS in taxes.

For example, let's say that the final price of the new FXT is $25k. Adding in 6.5% tax, the total price would be $26,625. Let's say that the dealer is willing to give you 7500 for a trade in. Then the final price would be (25000-7500)x1.065 = $18,637. On the other hand, if you sell the car outright for $9k, your total loan amount would be (25000x1.065)-9000 = $17,625.

Of course, this is just an example to give you an idea of what to look at. Also, it does not take into account the amount of money you have left on the loan of the RS.

    Thanks for the replies, guys.

The dealer is offering $5700 for my car, and they're not budging. I still owe $~5900 (basically 18 more monthly payments).

Chong, the Forester I'm looking at buying will beat yours. :p

If I keep my RS, I won't have to worry about spending more money modifying the car as it is basically modified the way I like it. The forester will be a whole new car in which I will be temped to mess around with.

...I think I'm gonna keep my car. :)

Your car is worth more when sold privately than $5700. People are always looking for Imprezas.

Also, only under the most extraordinary circumstances would I ever finance a vehicle for 6 years. Ye gods!

Lightly modded FXT would be ultra sweet. Exhaust, lowered, reflash = totally sick amount of torque.

Wow Fong, this is a big move to give up ur rs:???:, but it's ur decsion. But all I know is I will kill u}:) if u trade ur car in for that price, that is BS, by posting ur car up for just a week u would be able to sell it for more. Hell i'll even help u find a buyer and u would get a minmum of $7000. So please don't trade it in for that price.

That's what I was thinking: just a few mods and the car is a killer. Lowering it would be one of my first priorities.

I'm with Zola on this one. That's an awful long finance option. Can you imagine how much you'll be paying just on the interest? *whistle sound* I would at least wait and sell your RS on the private market for more than $5700. Impulse buys can be fun, but also dangerous. Go with your gut, not your desires. Sleeper XT=freichen SWEET though.

I suppose they lowered the price of the FXT to pull me in. The difference they make from buying my car for $5700 and turning around to sell it for ~$10000 will be their gain. That could be how they do business. :???:

Fong your car is way too cool to go for 5700. with all the sweet stuff you have done you should be able to get alot more for it via private sale.

the FXT is a sweet car. you might be able to put v7 or v8 sti suspension on it, lowering it almost 1.5" below imprezas. which would look awsome. maybe a up and down pipe, and areflash and you woul dbe set.

IMO i say keep your RS, its already the way you want it, and if your looking fro turbo power, you can just pick up a kit for a decent price (less then new car price) and be almost as fast (less torque). or you could do an FXT swap. this would be awsome, having gallons of torque in your RS.

Remember when looking at buying a car, that only the bottom line is important.

Paying retail and getting $8k on your trade-in may be the same as the discounted price on the FXT with $5700 as trade. You can play with the numbers all you want to make yourself feel better, but it comes out the same.

Not too long ago my dad(a shrewd negotiator) bought a truck. He had a dilapitated Caravan for trade. I would have been surprised if that Caravan had a BB value of more than $1k(tranny going, all sorts of issues). Dealer gave him $3k for the van, but he had to pay retail on the truck. Done deal, but the dealer could have offered him $500 on the van, and discounted the truck $2500 and the bottom line would have been the same.

Also remember that you should just pay a little extra on your payment and it is get paid off ALOT faster. When the gf bought her car, she went with the 63 month option and will pay the same amount (or more) as the 60 month option and cut 5 payment off at the end. I have a 60 month loan on my car and I have been paying extra on it and it will be paid off by the 1st of the year (15 payments early).

WRX swap, enough said. Put a turbo kit for it that has the GT32 twin scroll and you'll be set. No more power after that....for you that is....

i'm with fuji. just take a loan for a swap. your 3 year personal loan is better then 6yrs plus you'll have a sti spec-c engine in the nicest rs. but if your really looking to sell. i believe windfactor (ugo) would buy it. why do you need that car anyways. your not a family man. i've been looking at this vehicle for a long time but i'm going to wait for the sti version. it will come. also on nasioc, there is a guy selling a black fxt for 19k. vf39, sti top mount intercooler, turbo back exhaust and jic suspension.

Yeah Fong. Kong told me about it just a minute ago. Selling it to me would be a great idea, but I haven't heard from any jobs that I applied for. My wife won't buy me it unless I have a job, I mean any job that isn't picking up garbage/trash. Once I find one or some of the jobs I applied for comes through, I'll pick it up for around $7000, that's if I find a job though. You can help me to speed up the process Fong j/k :). Let me know bro. Ugo.

I would have to agree about finding a better price for your RS. You can get way more for it than that. Also you gotta figure insurance will be quite a bit more on a newer car, especially if it has factory turbo. (really sporty to insurance companies) And as someone else said, your principle balance is going to kill you with interest tacked on to it. I pay more than my minimum payment on my USED 02 RS I got last year, and I'm down to 11K balance instead of 16 now. Lower your loan amount = less money going to the banks pocket from interest, and more money going to the payment.

Yeah, there's no way I'm going to sell my car for $5700. To me, it is worth way more than that; but like I said, that was the dealer's strategy to make me buy the new car at a low price. I was going for it, but I thought about reality and decided to keep my RS.

Deride, when I called my insurance agent to quote me on the MY04 FXT, he said that it would only raise my premiums by $8 a month. It could be due to the increased safety of the newer Subaru models. :???: So, a FXT in the future is a good bet.

Yeah, I think I should do a lot more searching before I target my next vehicle purchase. Thanks, Kong.

...or maybe a swap... but that would be too easy! :p

Nice, I still pay way too much. It's 180 per month for my 02 RS, and I have a clean driving record, never been in accident or pulled over. Hopefully it drops when I turn 25.
