so, I went to Upull in E bethel today to check out the XT6 they have listed on their site. I was going to pull a crap load of stuff off of it. well, turns out, they crushed it about a week ago, and didn't update their site. they crushed a bunch of other subarus then too, took those off the listing, but not the XT6. ugh.....wasted trip.

and, to add insult to injury (or maybe the other way....), on the way home, my car starts making this horrific shrieking sound from the front end. sounded EXACTLY like belt squeel. but definitely not. it's definitely speed related, and not engine/gear related. changes depending on whether accellerating or coasting, but only goes away when turning slightly to the right (unaffected by a left turn). also unaffected by the brakes.

so.....with the exception of the type of noise, it sounds exactly like a wheel bearing type thing (except I wouldn't expect such a high-pitched noise...). but I just had brand new bearings professionally pressed into these knuckles only a couple months ago.

front end setup is '92 legacy knuckles, bearings, and axles. '02 RS brakes. '89 RX trans (with the exception of the center diff, is virtually identical to early EJ 5-speeds).

    thoughts?

    There. Or here. Sometimes both.
I had a similar thing happen once. Terrible squealing sound that went away when turning slightly in one direction.

I had a small rock stuck in between the body of the caliper and the rotor. So, the squeezing of the brake pads didn't affect it, but turning opened the gap just enough to stop squealing, but not dislodge it. I had to dislodge it manually and the squeal was gone.

Hope fully it's nothing more major than that!

as in: noise doesn't change when in 5th gear vs 4th gear, or clutch engaged or disengaged. belt noise changes with rpm, this is not. only by speed, load, and steering angle. it's even there when barely moving at all, although more of a groan at slow speeds.

good thought on the rock in the caliper.....hadn't though of that *crosses fingers*

I haven't had a chance to look at it, got to deliver pizzas in the girlfriend's escort tonight  . will take a look in the morning. any and all opinions welcome (as long as I haven't ruled them out already :-p ). I can't afford to have this car out of commission any longer!!!!

    Ugh! My car did/does this.
I had the alternater belt, and the ac belt replaced. It stopped for awhile and now it's suddenly doing it again. It's a pleasent noise to look foward to when starting my car at 5 in the morning. I'm sure my neighbors enjoy it!

If you had the belts replaced more than likely you just need to retension the belts. If you feel like driving to hastings I'll do it for you for free. It takes about 3 minutes.
