First off- i hope this doesn't break any forum rules, let me know if it does. I've got a ton of audio stuff laying around that i'd like to sell I'm also very experienced with fiberglass, metalwork, and general audio system design (as well as true bodywork/metalwork as in making custom bumpers or the like). some current equipment- memphis 2k rms monoblock tsunami 1800t and db4440 amp pair (1800x1 and 100x4 respectively) mtx 564 4 channel mtx 942s some ppi art series mtx 9500 10" (this one is nib) mtx 9500 12" (new as well) mtx 9500 12" (2 test fit and lightly run ones- 1 hr tops on these and you can tell) kicker L7 12" kicker solo X 18" alpine 9855 source unit alpine 7949 source unit tons of install stuff (all mobile spec) too miscellaneous to list also i have a few pre-fab mtx enclosures laying around and would love to build an enclosure from mdf, fiberglass, whatever if it helps me sell some equipment. -drew tsunami amps- these are an awesome deal also, 9855 alpine- few years old, but literally never used more than for test fitting. Great unit- and caps- $35 each out of my escape demo truck (like new)
would you be able to build a sub enclosure to fit in the trunk and save some space? How much would you charge for something like that?
of course i would! cost would of course be determined by where and what materials. i've thought about a small set-up soon in my bugeye which would take the place of one of the trunk sides and just add a little bass. Other options would be doing a spare tire space enclosure or (if you don't use your folding seats) something like in my mercedes- likely minus the "extras" that are in there. however, a front firing enclosure which seals the subs into the cabin (seals them off from the trunk) is one of the best options for sq/spl in any car. most likely the first route up above is for you (and for my subaru as well- as i have no intension of going too far into the audio realm with it- as it sits now it just has a 7" lcd panel in the stock hu location, a jvc hu relocated to the upper vent location, and some diamond hexes. at most i'll amp the hexes and add a single 10
What? Too many #'s and abbreviations. I have 2 old-school mtx thundercast 10's and need an amp to power them. I need something that wont burn out in my trunk, so it needs to have an internal fan (black car overheats stuff) lemme know if you have something that may work. ps- 500th post, woot!
yeah, I have a type r 12" sub. I would like to get a fibraglass enclousere that will fit on one side of the trunk so if you are making one for your car I would buy the other one from you.
I am also very interested in a custom box, something like this ... http://www.audiointegrations.citymax.com/catalog/item/3595562/3210636.htm
yeah, that's more or less the type of enclosure that i thought would fit with my own goals for my subaru (and likely the one that most other owners would want as well i would think) I may take the time to make a few if people are interested. I'm sure there are other people/companies already making those? right? i can probably do it better and cheaper and more personalized, but i'm curious what else is out there before i'd start throwing prices out. -drew I have an mtx 202 amplifier that should have no problems powering those old subs in your trunk (and without overheating). It's in excellent condition and i would sell for around $60.
just a random install from this summer which is somewhat related- this was a 1 day only fiberglass project for a customer (hard to get that quick of turn around so it was necessarily simple). Also, those subs are not excellent, but they worked out well enough (the customer brought them to me) and a picture of that 202... (mostly a joke, but yeah it looks like an mtx thunder series amp in good condition)
I would love a box like that for a great deal that is not 350 like that one is, I would even help if that was needed
is that a prefab from somewhere that they sell for $350? link? it shouldn't be that much- we could do it for around $75 in parts and even paying me $150 for an afternoon you come out pretty far ahead- plus we can tweak it to your desires etc. (and it will get cheaper if we are making multiples so long as people agree on the size of sub to use and volume needed- at least to some degree)
yeah, it would be fairly easy to make a bunch of those if we wanted to- definitely a bit cheaper- but probably more importantly customized to your taste a bit. basically, i'd make a mold of the sides of that enclosure which actually touch the car (the non-carpeted bits). Then i could easily make copies of that part with whatever size subwoofer ring placed wherever i wanted to put it. That would mean i could easily "customize" it to each person's needs so far as sub size and enclosure volume. could even do it ported if someone desired and had an appropriately designed (very small enclosure) sub. Would people just want the drivers side like that? for some reason i had thought the other side had more space?
Me and Taras have the same woofer, also passenger side might make more sense in case a guy had to get at his jack.
we will have to give this a few weeks and try to get a feel for how many people are interested etc. I can do it if it's only for 1 or 2 people though- but it will affect how i go about doing it. I'd really prefer just to make a mold and be able to make many of them down the road if i feel like it (there is demand) but that wouldn't be worthwhile for just 2 or 3. My car will be back next week and i'll have it the rest of the winter- so i'll be able to use it as a starting point too. What changes are there in the trunks of these cars over the years?
makes sense to me- cool. i'll probably be running an mtx 5500 12" (i know i have one laying around) so all 3 of our enclosures will be basically the same. For my own car i will want it to sit as flush with the side of the trunk as possible- such that i have as much space as is truly available. We can start this as soon as i get the mercedes finished and tuned (hopefully that is 2 weeks from tomorrow). It may get weird though as it's a custom set-up and many things could go wrong. I've also already told a few parts suppliers that i would do before and after dynos with their parts (which means wasted time too). I also will have to waste a day sometime fairly soon installing gm boost control on my wrx and getting that retuned. I'm sure we can work this in well enough though.
sounds great. I am sure if you do a good job with it you can make a good money makeing them. Let's set up a GB and see how many people want this. You could even later sell them on nasioc.
yeah, i can do that. the issue becomes the number vs. cost if we can get 5 or so people now (that would be me, the two of you and hopefully a couple others) it would make a lot of sense for me to sit down for a couple days and work with the local people to make these at a real low cost. I can see doing the first 5 customer (however many we can get lined up to do all at one time) ones at a special price something like $220 per for it in grey carpet and customized perfectly for each individual woofer (such that it fits nicely countersunk or uses the grille of your choice AND that it will have the perfect volume as well or porting depending on the situation). The price would then go up to $250 for individual orders coming in one at a time etc. for that first set we'll probably all have to meet up at someones place and discuss things etc.. if i'm going to try to sell them on a broader market later it would be nice to have a few peoples input into the original design as well. Not everyone seems to have the same goals/desires as i would for audio stuff. you will act as a little focus group! these could fairly easily also be done with real carbon fiber once we have this mold up and going etc. (but it's expensive) and potentially with a carbon fiber overlay too. Of course straight up paint is an option too or regular carpeting (carpeting is the $220 option). Paint is a solid $150 more work than the carpet. Let me know if this makes some sense?
will do- the only real variable is my other car at this point (and the available overtime i could pick up here in Rochester). We will plan on a saturday or sunday 3 weeks from today- fair?
well, those decks, with an ipod adaptor can be used. That's what i mean. I'm looking at alpine, I guess from all the reviews they have the best ipod control on the market.
The 9855 will leave you disappointed in control unless you want BASIC control of your iPod. However the rest of the deck is fantastic. (I am running one right now, until I finally upgrade). PS Sorry Drew, not trying to kill a sale for you. Just don't like my interface.
that's why i didn't recommend it however, in my opinion using the ipod for control is best. I like to change songs straight up on the ipod and have it on my lap when i drive when i use it (and use a pure rca auxiliary input on the deck) which works with many decks. I don't think ANY of the control systems through the deck are as convenient as just holding the thing.
would be similar of course, but by using glass we can get more air space and make it look a little cooler (more of an integrated fitment) why did they switch to drivers side? as it says on their page? any ideas on that?
i was just out looking at my car and i still think i would want to proceed on the passenger side. I think i can get enough air space for your type Rs for SURE over there without having to protrude out into the cargo space hardly at all. If i go with the 9500 or L7 i'll have to bow mine out a bit more though, but that's the beauty of my plan for the mold.
going to bump this- i could potentially do this on the 4th, 5th, 6th... at least get it started anyone else interested you guys want to talk it over? I'm going to db on monday for some tuning and i'll likely be up sunday night for sure
I will be out of town 7-11 lets get a thread that states exactly what you are doing and figure out how many would be down for this.
The drivers side placement of the above box is probably because of the ic water spray tank on the passenger side of the STi. Just a guess.
can i just make a threat stating what i'm going to do, or do i need to talk to a moderator etc. on this forum? basically, going to make custom fiberglass enclosures. Each will run $220 (i'm thinking) and will be custom sized for whatever subs someone is running (displacement, woofers cut-out size etc.) and be finished in either black vinyl, grey carpet, or black carpet. They will be better than what is available because they will be thicker, stronger, better fit/customized to your application, and made locally with your direction. If i can put that in a new thread- will that work?
