With the steady increase in the gas prices, what plans do you have for this upcoming crisis? Sell your subie for a fuel efficient hybrid? definetly not an option for most...or just deal with it. Keep your driving to a minimal hence reduce on unecessary driving around ? Or go back to stock tunes? let's hear your thoughts.
Bicycle! I probably drove less than 5k miles last year and don't see that number going up any this year. I'll probably keep my driving to the weekends and for trips where I can really enjoy the drive. Otherwise I'll continue to carpool or bike whenever possible. Fortunately my commute isn't far, so when I do drive (and the gf doesn't) the choice is between: do I take the 16-20mpg truck that takes 87 or the 20-26mpg sedan that takes 93? It's all a wash in the end.
The issue is that even NA cars are going be quite expensive when it comes to filling up the tank. Perhaps more people are going to take the bike option. I would probably rock this in the summer.
Selling a solid running Subaru with no mechanical issues to purchase an overpriced hybrid will not save you any money. I never understood this thinking. If you have a 2000 or newer SUV that runs and drives fine, and you sell it off tomorrow for a Prius, you are going to eat the premium cost of a Prius over 5 years, then spend the next 20 trying to make up that cost in gas savings. Best options for saving money on gas: Fewer 'leisurely drives to nowhere' Buy a used motorcycle for your daily commute. Preferably a gas sipping japanese make. Bicycle to work (where applicable)
i dont see that happening being e85 went from 2.49 to 2.79 overnight. if it did get to bad where i live now i could bike to work as well.
Time to start distilling alcohol alcohol. There is company that sells a machine that converts sugar and beer into. Ethanol. I think it was called the microfueler or something. Sent from my FroyoEris using Tapatalk
This! Changing your driving style can improve your mileage significantly. I adjust my tire pressures very often. If the roads are dry, 40psi. But then drop it to the recommended 28 when the nastiness comes.
How much is diesel these days? Gut a jetta tdi? You could still race s2000s in the desert on the weekends.
I'm going to do mad lat pulls until I have the strength to fly under my own power. I actually started biking again last fall and will continue that for a lot of my trips under 10 miles. My motorcycle barely breaks 30mpg, but it's better than any of the cars. That takes about half the miles in the summer. Beyond that I have no intention to change my driving habits. If I want to drive somewhere I want to do it in something fun and what is the point of driving something fun if you're going to drive it like a ninny?
But with the diesel you'll be around 30-42 mpg (depending on your right foot). But this also brings up Jason's issue, you just spent money to save money and it will take you forever to make it back... also assuming the economy stays the way it is right now and doesn't get worse.
I'd buy stock in the petrol companies. Not sure if this is the best investment, I've never looked into petrol stocks before. I made it easy on myself already. Live 2 blocks from work (walk everyday!!!), 4 blocks from 6 bars and restaurants, and have a grocery/full liquor store a half block away. Makes life really easy.
hear hear! I definitely don't get to enjoy my drives enough as it is so I'm not holding back. I'll continue to enjoy my Sunday drives and feel like an old man. I made the decision to have fun cars over economical cars. That's assuming you buy up. You can certainly come out square or ahead depending where you are at currently. But yes, hybrid prices aren't quite competitive enough for me to think about owning one. I certainly wouldn't get into one thinking it's more "environmentally friendly." I had this conversation with my sister a few years ago when she was convinced she wanted a prius. After I sent her a spreadsheet breaking down the cost of ownership over the next 5-10 years versus a corolla, she changed her mind, bought the cheaper car, and couldn't be happier. We averaged between 35-42mpg on our trip from here to SF (depending on altitude and who was driving). Anyway, my point about diesel cars is that you can get into a 6 year old 42mpg jetta tdi for less than a bugeye wrx. You'd be stuck with a Jetta, but it is slightly less fasterer and furiouser than a wrx.
Just waiting for this snow to melt and warm up. Gotta get the motorcycle out so I can be getting 50mpg. I switched to a different shift so I only work 3 days a week now.
Motorcycle. My Yamaha FZ-6 is fun to ride, and economical (unlike a Harley or other heavier bikes). The only things to worry about are other motorists not paying attention and weather/road conditions. I'll also be driving my NA rally-x beater to and from work to save a little bit. My car's gonna end up a garage queen.
Just continue to work on my tune. I am already up in the 25-27 in the summer, so I think with a bit more tweaking I might get up to 30. If not, I will install a bigger turbo to free up the exhaust a bit and will easily get over 30. Russ
yeah my car is some how de-tuning itself to get 12 mpg. no joke. I have been trying to figure out why i am getting such bad mileage... If anyone has any clues, give me a shout! ...even with that I will not change my driving habbits any!
yes i do, and it runs right between 190 and 200 all the time. and i have checked and rechecked vacuum lines for leaks and i have replaced my maf sensor with another one and it doesnt change.
aqua thunder doesn't get much better gas mileage than a wrx, or at least the way i drive it and the filler neck also leaks a little bit. I have a bicycle when I can't afford gas.
Luckily I have a 5 mile commute both ways, and I only work 4 days a week, so a tank of gas typically lasts me 2 weeks. Once it warms up though I'm pulling out the bicycle! I've been eying a few small output motorcycles so we'll see where that takes me.
Ya I have a 40 mile commute to work so once the weathers nice I'm parking my bike at the daycare ladies garage drive the car there with the boy leave it and take my bike to work Hi Five!
I'm looking at moving closer to work. Spending $250 a month on fuel just to commute to work is annoying.
actual distance to work isn't so bad for me, like 27 miles one way but it's traffic that really drives my fuel consumption up. slowing down, speeding up, stop, go, etc.
I work 20 miles or so from home and only one time did I ride my bicycle to work. I was quite proud of myself until on my way home I rode past a school and a bunch of kids made fun of me riding my bike......buttholes. yep, a motorbike is the only way I'm two wheelin anymore.
Seeing all these 20, 30, 40+ mile commutes makes me glad mine is under 10! Only reason I bike is because it takes the same amount of time to ride as it does to drive, park, and walk a few blocks... 20 minutes for 6-7 miles depending on the route. Also, it's barely enough to get the car up to temp  jerks! How long did that take?!
I bought a new corolla and I went from getting 22mpg to right around 40mpg, between me and the wife we spend around $900 a month in gas
5.2 miles one way to work. I really don't want to arrive sweaty, so gas will have to get quite a bit higher before I bike it.
I lied, I forgot I didn't live in Blaine then so more like 15 miles or so. It took long enough tha tI got to work and decided to turn around and go home. I really don't even remember it was pushin ten years ago.
