2005 Legacy GT Up/downpipe, GS BCS. There is an O-ring somewhere that is worn out or extremely sensitive to temperature. Once the temp drops below 40 and the car sits for a few days, something is dripping on something else that gets hot. Smoke/smell come out the hood scoop for a few miles and then gone. No drip marks on the driveway. It seems to be smoking from the passenger front of the car. PS o-ring somewhere? I come seeking wisdom!
When I had my 05 outback xt the coolant hose from the reservoir to the turbo was leaking ever so slightly onto the up pipe and burning off. Does it smell like burning coolant or oil? Are there any fluids built up on the under engine cover?
I will check into that. I havent removed the plasic engine cover (top) or looked at the under engine cover yet. Your suggestion is a good one. Smell is nasty, not like burning oil.
The oil drain tube from the turbo has a tendency to leak if it's old or been removed often. It could drip on to the manifold and cause some smoke. You could also have numerous sensors and seals causing leaks.
I will look at that oil drain tube as well. As far as I know, it's never been removed, but is original. thank you!
What does it smell like? Burning oil, coolant, and plastic (electrical sheathing) all have pretty distinct smells.
Not electrical, not plastic. Oil? PS fluid? I don't believe it to be coolant, but maybe. The odd thing is this only happens occasionally and only when the temp is below 40F.
Does it smell like fuel? Not sure about the smoke but did the LGT suffer from the same fuel line problem that the early WRX's did?
Per our phone conversation, this one might help: https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2088822 It's for an EJ20, but I can only assume it's a pretty similar concept/layout to what you're working with there. And another: https://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1928044
Valve cover gaskets? Banjo fittings? Oil or coolant drains, hell I've had smoke from a torn inner CV tossing some goop on the down pipe. Want me to take a peek? I've owned two of those cars.
Oil return line. Pain in the butt to replace, but fairly inexpensive and a simple fix to your problem!
pull turbo, replace line, put turbo back in. go in from the top, so take the intercooler off, lift car, remove downpipe, drop car, remove turbo, replace line, reverse the steps to put back together.
Does Grimmspeed charge us more for being a part of MNSubaru or is there a discount of some sort if we buy local? Or is the correct answer none of the above?
I was going to say don't use el cheapo gaskets but you beat me to it! You can pick up @GrimmSpeed and get a discount
+1 vote for GS gaskets. I like my gaskets like I like my rap video butts - thiiiiiick. Cue @tangledupinblu with the beatz!
