When do you peeps tend to mount up the winter set? I read somewhere (probably here) that it is a good idea once temps are consistently below 50, I am sure many wait until a blizzard happens. Thoughts? Also, handraise in this thread when you do put them on so we can see who is first/last to do so. (just curious)
I have two sets of wheels w/tires on for each car so I usually just wait till the temp at night is getting below freezing 32 degree's or a forecast of snow before I switch them out.
usually i wait till the last possible second to put the winters on because i dont want to burn them off. typically this is right after the first big snow fall.
Once a snow comes or the temp is almost always below 50 is a good time to switch. Above 50F my snow tires start losing grip in braking - abs kicks in a lot earlier. snow tires wear faster in warm temps too
It also depends on what summer tire you run. If you use a softer compound tire, switching out earlier is safer. Once the temperature drops consistently in the 40's, my RE070's are coming off.
Dave Dahl's KSTP forcast for this year is 68" of snow, average is 55.9" and last year had 35.5" of snow. I am hoping this will the realized with more snowy days of fun. So for those who dont have snow tires, you may want to reconsider. LOL
^ w00t!!!!!! I switch when the temps are consistantly below 40. i did this last year and it worked great. my tires show very minimal wear. My current tires are in real bad shape and will not work for snow at all this year (as they didnt last year) so I am itching to put on the snows ASAP. so i am not stuck with an inch on the ground and bald tires.
I don't ever switch to snow tires. Ever. I run summers all winter. I = Hardcore. Wanna know the best way to deal with snow driving? Drive on bald Yoko Parada spec2's for a snow season.
And do you run with same pressure all the way around? (all 4 tires?) Crazy me but I always run 2 psi more in the front then on the rear.
This isnt called driving. I was looking for the exact quote (which i cant find right now) but it is called "Creatively herding" yourself down the road. ^ yeah i run the same pressure F and R.
It's only "Creatively Herding" if you are a suck driver. I did it two winters in a row, and never once did I curb a wheel or scrape a curb, or miss my mark.
^ you are the one who called it creatively herding or perhaps creatively piloting. something along those lines. i really wish i could find the thread with that post, it was hilarious.
You just have to learn to anticipate more and pay attention. And I vaguely remember what I called it. But yes, you have to be a little more creative and proactive, but it is entirely possible.
I usually just run all seasons. This winter I have a set of snows, and they'll go on the rims when I realize that my RE92s suck so much worse than they did last winter because of the less tread.
I used to put mine on over thanksgivings, but that was when I used to store my winters at my grandmas in iowa. Last year I didn't put them on until pretty late in the year, sometime after dizmal busted up his rims and I vultured in on his hakkas  Hardcore my ass, more like, never drove on a proper set tires in the winter yet and don't know the pure sex you're missing
I'm still on the fence as to which winters I should get 1) go uber cheap 2) Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2 3) some form of Dunlop .... etc. The Hakka's turned out to be alil much for my taste so there out.
There's a reason the M3 (now 3D) is the highest rated tire out there. The price difference between those and the uber cheap (Winterforce) is 10 bucks a set right now with the 50 dollar mail-in rebate.
Yeah for the 6 days a year the roads have it on the ground. My streets are plowed before I get out of bed 99% of the time.
Oh is that what I need to do? I drove a 95 V8 Thunderbird the last 3 winters I hoped the streets were plowed when I got up.
...and when you run into my ass because you misjudge (or have to make an emergency stop), you will pay the price. Running like that is irresponsible as you do not control the actions of others around you. You made it to this point, great, good for you. That doesn't mean you will make it another winter. ....luck doesn't last forever.
