Currently working an a Chess Set design with a group: Engine parts is our theme... My buddy made these..... cant remember what the Spark plug is (Rook maybe) Camshaft is the Queen, this is how it was made and put together I am making the Pawn and King: Lathe work done where it is supposed to end up it kind of did The King has yet to have the top milled... it will be a rim on top of Lug Nuts (supposedly)
We also had to make a plastic injection mold... I never wanted to do it.. but threw this together... it is the Logo to our MMA School... Anyone who is a UFC fan should recognize it form some of the top fighters.... I made a cookie cutter and then took a box into the MMA school and gave them away to all the kids... cookie cutter Wife and the kids made cookies you really dont want to know how many hours was put into this project.... too many for my liking...
Nice! Everything looks like a lot of time and thought went into them but that chess set is especially creative!
I have to make 16 pawns... each one took 10mins on the lathe.. and about 50 mins on the mill EACH... shop time that would be over $1600 just on the Pawn work.. hahaha not -> (PORN work - although I think this set will be sex) I haven't even done the tool paths for the rim part of the King... luckily I have 5 to do... 2 for the set and 3 for scrap.. hahaha A third machinist is doing a tappet/valve thing and also a Distributor cap.. will post pics of those when done....
Where are you going to school? I graduated from Anoka Tech in the Machine Trades Program back in 97 and made a pretty cool plastic injection mold. That is some fun stuff! I'm now a Extrusion Tool designer, but spent many years on the floor making chips and running EDM's. Nice work!
Nate, I bet if powdercoated the pieces and slapped a Ferrari/lambo/porsche/bentley logo on the chessboard you could sell it for a couple grand on 6speedonline
Nice work Nate! Here i thought that you just slept through class...but you're actually getting stuff done!
A frame/mini bike my teacher is building.... he designed and machined the frame himself... best part... he gave me one... just have to make some additional parts for mounting the engine etc... (designs which he gave me too)
Made a couple of quick throw together covers.... and the Chess set is done, just needs the Anodizing to be done.
