So I went to the Minnesota Autosports Commision meeting last night and a board member from Volksport mentioned that they would like to fund an autocross to get people interested in the sport. Ideas were kicked around and one of which was that if a lot of the smaller car clubs that had an interest in doing an event like this could pool their resources/supply more drivers. This is where you guys come in. Is there any interest here at all? The idea was that it would be set up a little more insructionally and with more runs than your average autocross. The idea from Volksport's end of things is to get people involved in autocross and convert more people into addicts. So are they're mentioned they'd put up the money for it, so i dont think it would really be much of a financial burden for us. some ideas that were also mentioned were to have a car show at the event (more volksport members/mnsubaru members seem to be interested in car shows than autocrossing) barbecue etc. It looks like it has the potential to be fairly fun, but i'd like to gauge interest to see if anyone here would actually care enough to enter their cars. The resonse to autocrossing is pretty low percentae on this board, so this is more of a shot in the dark than anything, but it would be nice to get feedback now while the event is in its planning stages. any input / suggestions would be weclome. Edit: alos the idea of a MNsubaru vs. Volksport driving competition was floated several times. I favor this idea, although in Street Mod i have to compete against a Volkswagen that won a national championship this year...
I like the Volksport guys. I'd be down just to go there and sit around watching Auto-x and eating barbecue.
yeah, one of the logistical issues is that there are probably a lot more people interested in car show/hanging out/bbq/watching autocross than driving imho. I think it would be interesting the the car show aspect and the autocross were combined, say have a car concourse judged by attendees while not running and average those points against its run times for a special trophy, in addition to other guys just showing their cars. I guess i think it would probably work best as something that encourages participation in the autocross, since the idea by volksport (putting up the money) is to be a loss leader if neccesary to involve their club in more organized motorsports. but the more people who come, the better anyways. It would be nice to do it at central parking (surface is easier on tires, in the twin cities, newcomers won't be tired of the layout, tends to attract more spectators and has an area that cars could be shown in)
I know me and my dad would definately be in. Especially if i have an XT6 by then  My dad's quite interested in AutoX, but is somewhat afraid to get into it since he'd be so new...but he's got an '85 Nissan 300ZX that he's putting new shocks/struts on this winter, and is a pretty good driver, so I think he'd do well If the timing works out, we're there!
You know i'm always down for an autocross. Sorry Zak I'm not really a newbie anymore. I hope more Minnesota Subaru members will come so they can do something other than race in a straight line (No offense, just not what a Subaru is made for...) I think it would be interesting to see if we can get enough members to have a VW/Subaru showdown.
oh definitely. this sounds great. i would definitely be willing to joing our two clubs for this. could even turn it into an annual volksport/mns event. keep me posted zak
Doesn't MAC essentially do this each spring with the novice school? Seems to me if Volksport and/or mnsubaru want more people getting involved in autox, they should just promote the novice school more on the forums. The way that is set up, it couldn't be any easier for someone to get their feet wet. But hey, another event is another event, I would go.
i'm in both volksport and MNsubaru so i think it would be uber dank if we got the two together for a little annual competition
This was the most convincing thing to the board. Again, this isnt my idea, I just mentioned i'd present it to the members here and see what people's ideas are.

I'd definitely go if I didn't have anything else going on. my car should also be painted by then, so I wouldn't feel out of place in a car show. lol, flat black doesn't really fit in at a show
would there be a class for people like me who have never been to an autox, and dont really know whats going on.
I think that is kind of the point of the whole event. If you are really interested in autocross you can sign up for the novice school put on by MAC - http://forum.mnautox.com/forums/index.php? - tentatively scheduled for April 22/23 next year.
i would be down for this. i have never driven auto-x or any other type of competitive pavement racing before, and am kind of intimidated by it. but if its a cool laid back enviroment with some instructinoal help it would be AWSOME! plus i could finally figure out how well my car handles on pavement. and who knows after some practice i might have to try auto-x ing more often any idea when this event would occur? summer obviously but any date ideas? ohh ya and CONES BEWARE!  MUAHAHAHA
