So I recently have been working on an induction box to reduce heat to my SPT short-ram. I know, I know...just ditch the noisemaker and put the stock box on! I'd rather come up with a solution myself and keep my 'noizmayka'. So here are a couple of pics of the prototype that I made today with some thin gauge aluminum and duct tape<<<best invention evar, IMO. I'll add a couple 'in car' pics when I get them.

    Lmk what you think.:)

    needs rivets.

the tape is going to last as long as the filter.

    (but I like it)

haha...rivets would be good if this wasn't the mock up. The real thing will be heavier gauge aluminum, heat coated, and all seams will be welded!;)

    (thanks!)

I have a custom airbox that I'm semi-proud of. It's made out of two "For Sale" hard plastic signs.

This is not a heat shield as much as it is an induction box. The heat shield provided for $60 is a two sided heat shield. This is essentially four sided(when you figure in the fender wall as the 4th side) with a bottom in it. The SPT filter will be enclosed so that the air from outside of the car is the main feed, instead of the hot engine bay. Very similar to a stock style air-box, but custom built for the SPT intake.

As far as aluminum heat transfer issues...heat coating, wrap it, insulate it, don't know yet all the steps(overkill) that will go into R-values, but I know the colder the better! Maybe an Igloo cooler pack in the box to add some cool refreshing air to the short-ram!

The purpose is to see if I can decrease the heat going into the short ram from the engine bay, and increase air flow. Its an experiment....for now. I'm planning to install a lambo door to access the filter! ... j/k. But Ray might on his.

The duct tape is the "primary" insulator!!

So the project is about 2/3rd's of the way done. Here are some recent pics...

1)The first pic is the three stages of creation=cardboard DiGiorrno's pizza box&duct tape/thin gauge alum.trim coil&duct tape/and the final peice-1/8" alum. stock, welded and soon to be heat coated(sorry, no duct tape on the final product!:emo: )

    2)DA W3LDZ!...muahaha.

    3)Da f00t pix.;)

Update....the project is finished and in the car! w00t!

    Final Specs.

1)1/8 inch aluminum stock custom fit to tiny space.
    2)All seams=solid welds.
    3)Weep holes for any condensation.
4)Heat-coated by Grimmspeed with ceramic heat coating(a nice blue color to go with the flow of things I might add,IMO.)
5)Custom SVX trunk lid weather stripping as gasket to fender wall.
6)Bolts right on to current bolt location on the fender wall.

Thanks alot to Justin for the use of Grimmspeed headquarters!
Thanks to Fabiola, for the over-usage of his jigsaw! Thanks Matt!
Also, thanks to Collin(MethodleSs) for the SVX trunk weather stripping...at least a few parts from that SVX will live on!;)

Sorry about all the pics...something about creating something from nothing just gives you a good feeling!

The hood, just like the SPT box ;)

Nice work Josh, I want to take a look at that in person.

(On an unrelated note, I'll be calling Scott Larson tomorrow)

Yep, things seem to be getting busy next week, so it would be a good time!

And the hood IS what seals it on top!;)

After I drove 5 1/2 hours to Iowa on a 60 degree evening, I got out on the outskirts of town to hit the windsheild and headlights with the powerwasher to remove the mass amounts of bugs that accumulated over the 310 mile trip.
Opened the hood to check the inside temp of the box and it was easily as cold as the outdoor air temp! The outside of the box nearest to the motor was barely even warm. If I had to guess, I would say the inside of the box may have been 5 to 10 degrees colder than the outdoor air temp because of the 70mph I was travelling for a long period of time blowing in there making it even cooler. Just a guess, but the inside of the box was COLD!

I am yet to do actual temperature testing to see just how efficient it is...but I KNOW it makes a difference! I'll post some temp #'s after we collect some.:)

bring her on over to the shop again and we'll take some surface temp tests of the box itself.

There's no way the hood seals the top. It may be close to the top of the box but it's not sealed. Run some logs, you'll see how well it doesn't do. Not trying to bust balls here.. just sayin'.

BTW, that SPT turbo heat shield is pimp. Nice piece.

You are correct! It is not a "tight" seal yet. The cardboard or whatever the hood liner is made of sits against it for the most part. But, I am looking for some softer rubber gasketing of some sort to create a tighter seal...but as of right now, I know the box is reducing the heat. But a tighter seal on top would definitely maximize it! I'll find something that works!;)

Ok Josh and I did some testing today. The results actually look pretty promising. We took temps from two different locations....one probe was floating right outside of the box to mimic temps that would be enter the air filter without the box, the second probe was place inside the air filter itself.

    here are the raw results

As far as we can tell! The difference on the off-ramp idle impressed me! 137 degrees outside the box, and 103 degrees inside the intake!:woot: 34 degree difference at idle. A/C for my intake.:yumyum:

84 degrees out when we did the tests and the low temp in the box was 89.2.

    5.2 degrees difference!:)

Next mission is to cap the box, and a foglight mounted air intake to the box.

kudos on the project and testing guys. I've never been comfortable with a 'hot air intake' design... btw, wasn't there a member here with a GC STi swap who had a cf box around his intake or something? i seem to remember seeing it at firestone.

    honestly...I don't think they ever did a test...I'm guess'in similiar to yours...
hmmm...I guess people knew it wold block the heat a bit...But with your test it does show a great improvement
