2002 WRX. Just started to notice this when it started to get cold recently. I have had the heater on before, with no issues.

Basically when I go to turn the heater on, I get a nasty squealing noise from the front of the engine (outside of the car). It sounds like a pig is getting slaughtered. This used to happen on my Civic when I turned on the A/C. Same noise.

Anyway, it only seems to happen when the engine is cold. Once it warms up the noise goes away. I popped the hood and tried to figure out where the noise was coming from. I pinpointed it to here:

Has anyone had a similar issue? Maybe it just needs some WD-40 somewhere. Although, I'm guessing the cold weather has something to do with it, but then again I don't turn my heat on that much in the summer, so who knows. ;)

Thanks in advance for the help.

AC Belt OR Tensioner Pulley most likely.

If your using your defroster it kicks on your ac compressor

more than likley the AC belt. I suspect you have the HVAC setting to combo Defrost and Floor heat or just defrost? That setting will start the compressor as it's aprt of the system.

Good call, I do keep my defrost on a lot of the time. Was wondering why it would be coming from the A/C.

Thanks for the quick response guys!

just whatever you do, don't put wd-40 anywhere near the pulleys/belts
