What significance does referring to a modified car as a "stage 1/2/3/4/5/6/7/8/9/planck" hold? Is it just a personal thing, akin to naming your car? Do the stages have some requirements? (Stage 1 = carbon fiber blinker fluid, stage 2 = iPod dock on my wheels, etc.)
This one can start a holy war. In general I expect it to refer to power upgrades. If someone says they are at stage 1, I assume they have had a retune. Either OTS or protune map. Stage 2, I assume they have a full turbo back exhaust and a retune. Possibly injectors/pump/etc. I considered my car stage 2 with E85 and supporting mods. People go nuts with fractions here. For example, one might consider a stage 2 with internals to be "stage 2.5" Stage 3, new, larger turbo. Stage 4+, you came into some money. Those are the assumptions I've come to hold after seeing them consistently used in the subaru community. You will come across different definitions as there is no true standard.
Bans will be handed out like candy if this thread goes the way it's threatening to right now. Fair warning. Keep it civil.
Okay, so the thread in question (http://mnsubaru.com/threads/first-modifications-faq.10698/#post-190187) is in the context of Cobb stages, which I can understand - different companies that sell services / parts... Without such a context, does it even make sense to say "I have a stage 2 (car)"? I mean, that could mean anything... right? (Other than "This is a stock car.")
i meant to post a chart of the stages but this was in my clipboard so i just rolled with it ps. im stage 6
Stage 2 usually means downpipe and a custom tune minimum. Most people will explain what they have done further when posting something like that if they have half a brain. Some will even tell you the make and model of the car. At least then the audience has a clue what the poster is talking about. Context would be given, to me at least. I don't think the reference "stage X" is totally owned by Subarus.
Oh, I know, I see it everywhere and referencing every conceivable model of car - I was just curious about it as a phenomenon in car culture overall... I just chose to post my question here (on these boards, and in this forum) because it seemed like I'd have a helpful response here... and yeah, not disappointed.
Infidel! I'll have your head. Thanks for your wonderful and intelligent contributions. We look forward to seeing more of them.
Subaru stage 1 & 2 are sub 300whp losers according to a one former poster here. Certainly not GTO numbers, Yeah it doesn't give a detailed clue as to what has been done but it is a reference point. Anything beyond stage 2 is completely subjective and lacks context. Does that help?
I think I'm just going to use my system of "Stage 3 is when my car makes enough power to make my transmission explode" Also, was that a jab at me? I used to own a GTO but I don't remember ever ragging on the stage system... but I've done less intelligent things, so I wouldn't rule it out.
That is Subaru appropriate. No, jab? Me? Just jealous. I like cars. All of the good ones. That one for sure is one.
