We have a 2003 WRX as most people know. The top of the steering wheel is becoming worn and I would like to replace it with another stock wheel. What years are interchangeable and what if anything would I need to do with a newer model airbag? I am interested in swapping it with only a WRX or STI OEM wheel.

As far as I can tell the 02-05 all should be interchangeable. The 06-07 have a dual stage airbag while earlier models are single (basically two separate inflator charges of different strengths on the dual) so they have different plugs that if mismatched would not function correctly. I haven't disassembled and compared both to verify, but that's what I had found when looking at doing the same in my bugeye.
