So I spent the last hour ramming a STi intercooler onto my car but for the life of me the bottom part of the y pipe that meets up with the turbo inlet just wont stay on. it only slides about halfway onto the turbo outlet when it goes on and clamping it there didnt work as i jsut drove it and it popped loose during a 15 minute in town test ride.

from looking at the 06 standard and the STi intercooler it seems like the bottom part is the same length. Anything I am missing?

Ram harder? That's usually my solution. I don't think my intercooler was even close to having these kinds of problems.

use the STI y pipe or I believe you can extend the Tbody hose for a better angle. Best fit is with aftermarket or STI elbows

would there be any truth that the outlet on the sti turbo would be larger in diameter than a wrx?? well wait no......I have put a sti tmic on a wrx before.....i know it sounds dumb but could the clamp be striped or broken somehow? When you tighten it down can you break it free with just your hand?....or is it possible that the silicone hose when slipped onto the turbo catches underneath and you can't tell so when pressure builds up the thing just slips....i have done this swap with a ton of different intercoolers to sti's and wrx's alike....sounds like broken clamp or the hose isn't going on all the way.....ohhhhhhh wait/.......(sorry i know this is long)/ you are using the stock sti red silcone right?? there are metal braces within that silicone (like little strips of thin metal) that catch up alot...<<<<<<<<<thats what it is i bet so its not really going on all the way

I vaguely remember Peter having the same problem of wrx y-pipe with vf39. He or Herc should be able to clarify. Thomas' Sti intercooler with sti y-pipe on vf39 fits loke a glove. ssac y-pipe/intercooler also fit perfectly... all 06wrx with vf39 set-ups.

I am using the STi Y pipe, it jsut doesnt seem to go far enough.

also this is going onto a td-04, not a VF-39, perhaps the outlet is longer on a vf39?

I pushed the hose onto the turbo with a prybar and it still had a half inch on shiny part on the end of the outlet. maybe going to go force it again later when it cools down.

I'm guessing the Td04 you will have problems. Because I've taken my Intercooler off my STi and put it back on with no problems serveral times.

The TD04 should not have a problem, I have an STi 'cooler with the STi hoses/pipes and it mounts to my TD04 just fine.

ah, gotcha. In that case I'd suggest loosening everything up first (undo brackets and loosen tb hose). When I went from TD04 to vf39 (both with ssac tmic) I had to loosen the y-pipe on the intercooler side and slide it about 1/2" towards the intercooler.

The outlet is longer on the vf39.

You need to order a new silicone elbow that is longer to make it work. That's what I did -- I found one on ebay for like 15-20 dollars or so.

did you take the y pipe off the IC at any point?

Reason I ask....I've accidentially pushed the silcone hose too far up on the connections to the IC. with that said, the silicone hose was too far up so it wouldn't mate up to the turbo and wanted to pop off.

make sure your silcone hose isn't too far up. if it is then just lower it a bit....then you will have more hose to work with.

It doesn't work like that with the STi y-pipe and elbow. The y-pipe is a solid cast piece that bolts to the tmic. Then a small 90* silicone elbow (like 2" long per leg) is attached to the y-pipe and turbo compressor outlet.

If the elbow is pushed too far up the y-pipe, then there would be a vertical alignment issue which isn't the case here.

The problem is that the leg after the 90* bend isn't long enough to completly fit on the compressor outlet.

    He needs a new elbow.

yep, steve is right on, the pipe is just too short. I checked about 10 times this afternoon.

I am picking up a 90 degree one tonight to try out instead.

OMFG, I need to *finally* reschedule my VF39/GM BCS swappage with Grimmspeed and you are all making me develop a poo-tip in my shorts.

I have all the connecting hoses and clamps from the '04 STi that the terbohz and TMIC came off of. Please help me cease my anal excretions...

    Thank you in advance,

    The D@rk $ooby 0verl0rd.

You need an aftermarket silicone y pipe like a samco or somthing and then modify it like this http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3669 Thats what i did when i did my vf39 and sti intercooler swap. props for having the work done at grimmspeed too, I had them put on my springs and they are really nice people that know their stuff.

Ha never mind i just saw that you have the stock sti y pipe. Just find the right length hose

Thanks Brian, do you know if this intercooler bolts right on other than that hose? I have read mixed stories of the USDM STi intercooler not bolting right in....

You don't need a new throttle body hose since you have essentially the same drive by wire throttle body as the stizzle.

All you need is the correct 90* elbow.

    STi splitter FTW!

I got my JDM one yesterday, just waiting on the seal cause they forgot to put it in the box with the splitter.

Yes I am bumping this thread I have a few questions and don't feel a need to start a new thread. My question is I have a 02 wagon and I just bought a sti intecooler for it, I know I need a longer elbow, but what about splitters and rubber bellows? I looked on the subaru genuine parts website and they didn't start making them till 04, would a 04 fit? or do I not need them? I am assuming all I need is the kit you posted from...http://stylinmotors.com/subaru.html

You need the JDM splitter and JDM hood scoop if you don't already have it. The JDM splitter won't fit under the stock hood scoop.

You can get the splitter/seal kit from www.rallispec.com
