they didnt make the sti in 02-03, 04-05 was the only years that weren't the "pig nose" and the wrx didnt exist in the US before 2002.

I don't even know where to start with this one :ugh:.

What are your primary concerns? Power, comfort, gas mileage, etc. etc. etc. etc.

Really it depends a lot on what you want to do, how much you can afford (factor insurance on this), and how much work you want to put in. If you want just speed, a modified WRX will accelerate faster than an STi with the right parts for much less than STi cost. If you're looking for a track-day car or autocross car, then there's more things to factor into this decision.

04/05 things were revised on the WRX, great cars and with minimal time and money they are pretty stout.

STI will carry the 2.5L and boast a list of other nice perks, but the insurance and other things tend to be a shortcoming.

all WRX and STIs are fantastic cars, depends on what you want out of it, what you plan to do with it, and how much you are looking to spend to do it all.

from owning a fully modified wrx(non sti) and a stock sti, the sti wins hands down in my book...worth EVERY PENNY!

Well, assuming you're not wanting to buy new, I would suggest you drive all three class's of cars; the 02-05 WRX, the 06-07 WRX, and the STI.

All of them will drive differently, and it's up to you to decide what fits you best (along with price). Regarding the WRX vs STI comparo; none of the WRX's are going to be the full on package the same as the STI.

If you're looking for similar power, the 2.5L WRX is your best bet (although I guess you said you don't like them) compared to the STI, as it has virtually the same motor.

    Since you are 18, I'd start with a 2.5RS

In my opinion, if you pick a wrx or sti, you'll be happy.
Either the 2.0L or the 2.5L, mod it up and get a good tune.

lets see the sti is about 18g on car soup and the other is about 9g hmm.

so i get one for cheap and add mods to it and then i have less insurance and i get my car just how i want it

Personally, I would not trust an STI for 18k or a WRX for 9k.

Talk to your insurance agent first. At your age, insurance will be murder for either a WRX or STI.

what kind of money do you want to spend?

I've got an 06' tr and I'm very happy, but... people like different things. If you like saving money and are looking for a quick car you could get a 02-05 wrx, JUST DON'T WRAP AROUND A TREE!

very well maintained. I know some of the mod list has changed, but he wants it gone... you could probably get it for the low end of what you want to spend and then have some mod money.

IMO- whatever you get DO NOT get an STI wing...as attractive as they may be (I had one) they attact unwanted attention from police, every 18 year with a pick-up trying to race you at every stop light (oh wait, that's you isn't it.;)), and the only real pupose they serve is as a kitchen picnic table.

dude i think you need to read up-alot- on all the different routes you could take because it sounds like you dont really know a whole lot about the pro's and con's of the bugeye, blobeye, pig nose, all those different generations.

You could also look at a older RS (98-01) or an L. the EJ22E is perhaps the most reliable motor subaru ever made. It also hold PLENTY of potential for future modifications. for 12k i bet you could find an L w/ a WRX swap, which will pwn most STis.

wrx + mods. You can upgrade to an STi in the future if you want when your insurance drops a bit. That pic above is a 2002 wrx w/STi spoiler. It WILL get you unwanted attention from the law though. I know first hand.

And Dave, thanks for posting that pic again! It also serves as a nice 'bar counter' to sit your beer and salted peanuts on.

your payment for insurance could rival a car payment if you are only 18. I would stay away from the STi for that reason. Unless you have money to bleed. keep in mind, gas was like 3.46 today for premium. rough times... I would start with a 2.5RS...or Legacy GT (I used to have one---still fun) or an older rex. Anything new or an STi is going to kill your bank account.

    18yo?

Get a 2.2L or OBS, swap in a ver 5/6 motor, trans, and rear diff and beat up on some unexpecting 20somfin STi owners.

Plus insurance, payments, and parts when you dump inot a snow bank are much cheaper.

Got my 2.5rs w/ wrx swap for 7500. but ive put another 3 grand into it since...

insurence is WAYYYYYY nice! and its fast. plus GC's are oldskooolz and the JDMerz love it.

its just harder to find a swaped GC.... but its way cheaper in the long run if you find one!
