Any one know if he is ok? Car looked real smashed up. Anyone have any info? I herd the guy who smashed the evo up broke his hip and will be out of commission for a while.
I heard the sti driver walked away. EMTs cleared him with nothing serious. Somebody feel free to correct me if I heard wrong.
Spaz is the evo guy and he broke his pelvis but otherwise is fine..heard sti guy walked away and so did the fiat guy..only had some ceacked ribs.
Sam from EPDC said that a 240 got t-boned also during the drift session. Sounds like much carnage was had at this one.
Dang, anyone know the details of the STI or Fiat crashes? This is getting to be a bit ridiculous. I feel bad for the drivers as these become very painful/expensive learning mistakes...
Copy and paste from the event's facebook page: He was in 5th through the kink two tires went into the dirt, then he came back up on to the rumble strip which unsettled the chassis. This caused snap oversteer propelling him into the wall. The Evo's brakes faded to the point of being nonexistant and that was his first time ever driving on a road course. The Fiat crashed because he ran out of talent on a wet track, he's an experienced driver otherwise.
i had a blast! i stick to the drag strip and was a success for my friends. my buddy wade in his 1g went 9.7 first pass ever. backed it up with a 9.6 and then a 9.2. dips gc did a 9.9 with a leak i think. he never looked into if it was a leak or a clutch pack that was slipping. he was down 15mph. Nate's honda went 9.9 finally.
Learning lesson: make sure you get a good fresh bleed on your brakes (with high temp fluid) before going to the race track! Your car never sees those levels of braking on the street...even if you do drive like a complete ass hat. Glad everyone else had fun though. I really was looking forward to going, but my car wasn't done yet I've had the worst luck with actually making a PG...but I swear, one of these days, I'll be there!
Fiat was the brand new red/black abarth that didnt even have plates on it yet. I heard he walked away and is fine as well. All in all it was a great weekend and i had a blast! Great to see Wade hit 9.2, dipps car and nates civic!
Let me tell you guys which are the top four most dangerous turns at BIR from bottom to top. 4. T13 - decreasing radius turn - turn in too late, get on the power too early, too aggressive you're going straight, try and over correct and you'll understeer and crash into the wall on the right or oversteer (RWD) into the wall on the right. 3. T2 - The highest speed corner on the 2.5 mile track - you must be commited when excuting this turn any hesitation and you'll lose the backend. 2. T11 - this is the most technical turn as everything leading up to it starting from the carousel is just a winding mess. You must keep all your momentum and energy linear and behind you at all time by loading the cars suspension from side to side. There is a very fine line thru this section (9-10-11) if you drop your tires off coming out of T11 you must not get off gas pedal, the backend will get light and you will spinout. What you want to do is stay calm, steer the car straight in the direction where you want to go and slowly start slowing down the car by lightly coming off the power. This will keep the car flat and all four contact patches at maximum grip. I've seen many crashes as a result of lifting. I've also seen a lot of cars go off and survived as a result of not over reacting. 1. T12 - the slowest section - Everywhere else we're going WOT, this turn requires the altmost patiences. What most drivers don't understand is this turn leads to the most Important turn on the track. Do turn 12 correctly and you'll leave others in your dust thru T13 into the longest and fastest straight.
I worked with the the Fiat Abarth owner on Sunday during our rainy session and I coached him on that section. I was very sad when I heard the news.
LMBO ^^^ More often then not it's the guys with the highest aptitude to this sport who lack true track experience that poses the greatest danger to themselves and others. And that is why I'm so careful about showing them only a level or two above where they're currently at. I also remind them that I can make it look easy but do not try to replicate it right away. You must be patient and respect the track and the speeds.
