have you filed your 2007 income tax return? if so, check out the economic stimulus payment calculator at http://www.irs.gov/app/espc/ to determine if you qualify for a stimulus payment.

note: you'll need information from your 2007 income tax return.

Everyone not a dependent and who payed taxes on over $3,000 in income gets $600 + $300/child.

If you made over $75k, you may get less. Over $87k, you get nothing.

    One other thing of note:

This is not "extra money." It's simply an advance on your tax refund for 2008. This means, if you are slated to get back $1000 next year, you will only get back $400 (1000-600=400). If they "over-rebate" you, you won't owe any money back to the government.

So, change your deductions so they accurately fit your income.

Half correct, anyone who paid (owed) more then 600 in taxes last year will get 600. If you paid less it will be equal to the amount you paid/owed stopping at 300.

    http://www.irs.gov/newsroom/article/0,,id=179169,00.html

Not true. It's not an advance and you don't owe anything next year.

yeah, this is a rebate on your 2008 taxes not an advance

i also heard, though didn't confirm, that if you are claimed as a dependent this year and not next year you might get the $300 difference that the gov't did not pay out since all of this stuff is actually on the 2008 tax year. they are just trying to get the money out as early as possible

No, it's not. It has nothing to do with your taxes. It's a payment made by the Feds to you based on your 2007 tax return.

Absolutely tax free. The issue of it being "free" is another topic in and of itself. ;)

Exactly. Nothing like further swapping short term frivolities for compounding deleterious effects on our nation's long term financial well being.

    Freedom isn't free
It costs folks like you and me
And if we don't all chip in
    We'll never pay that bill
    Freedom isn't free
    No, there's a hefty f#$ing fee.
And if you don't throw in your buck 'o five
    Who will?

Read the IRS website and stop taking what you see on the interweb as gospel. The current payment has no impact your 2008 net tax liability and was determined using 2007 tax information.

The proof is in the writing (which I posted already):
If it was a rebate on your 2008 taxes then it would have to be claimed either as a credit or income and would effect your net tax liability. The IRS is saying it does not effect your 2008 taxes and is not a taxable item.

It's not a rebate. It's a payment. Look for the word rebate on the IRS website and let me know what you come up with.

yes but some states WILL be taxing it as 2008 income, though they can change their minds between now and then

mostly i just want people to know that if you are having a kid this year, you will get another check after you file 2008 taxes
