Every night when it gets dark I sneek around outside Rays store peeking in the windows and I rarely ever see him in there.

^Nathan, are you thinking about getting out of meineke?

Oh, and every time I've been at nathan's shop he's been there. The dude has probably put more blood and sweat into his shop than oil into cars.

Its a good thing he's got his sense of humor.

And that someone who will never leave his side, Fong.

the thought is in there somewhere... but I aint willing to give up yet cuase the land and building in a few years will be worth $3-4M+ but this industry is tough man... coupons coupons coupons... ha ha

i could write for weeks on what peole drive and what is wrong with their vehicles and how they refuse to fix it... like rotors seperated from the center of the rotor and all they want is the $19.99 oil change... hmmm nothing like keeping a clean conscience cause you changed you oil but dont care about safety... it gets discouraging being an honest business owner in a fairly corrupt industry... I could make a lot more money by doing what other shops (not all of them) are doing.. selling stuff that isnt needed... but we are too honest and refuse to do that... but in doing so then customers take advantage of you cause you are nice... its screwed up and very frustrating...

    oh well.. the battle continues

From what I've been through in sales in the last 4+ years...Being nice doesn't pay...Being Fair does. As long as you tell the customer the issue/problem you've done your part and whether they want to fix/repair it is there issue. They can't get mad at you for that!?! Good Dealership will reccommend certain maintenance issue or repairs before it gets even worse, just like you Nate. But again customers think your just Up-Selling them stuff they do not need.
When I sell a Subaru to anyone they all ask me "Would I buy it" whether it is extended warranty, rust proofing, paint sealant, fabric protector, Diamon-Fuzion (waste of $$$ honestly), etc. I've told customers Yes & No depending on there situation...I.E. Customers that drive 20k+ Miles per year...I'd reccommend buy the extended warranty (5yr/100k) because within the first year and a half the factory warranty is gone. Someone that drive less than
10k I say not to worry about it...When they ask me about fab protector, I tell them to go to target and buy a can of scotch gaurd for $5 and a light brush and spray and scrub your interior, usually takes 20-30 mins and you save $$$

Again, every situation is different...I do not Up-sell, I give suggestions and reccommendations...The battle continues

^^^ Same in any sales environment!!! I have to get my accounts to do the same types of things as well as do it myself, not always easiest, but your recommendation based on your knowledge and experience is extremely invaluable!!!

Nathan, you aren't necessarily "selling" as much as you are making maintenance recommendations based on what you feel is going to be BEST for the customer, i.e. your paycheck! :)

You do great work, and are honest to yourself and your customers! Not all that many people can say that about what they do and still go home feeling good about it...

P.S. I know I'll be lookin ya up in a couple months for some normal maintanence work like fluid flushes and possibly a cat-back install!!!! Why? Because your trusted and do excellent work!
