just wanted 2 get other opinions and see where else i can start looking for the best set up for my car. could be your opinion or setups you have heard of, have, or your wet dreams. anything tranny related!
1. First Everyone will ask what setup are you going for, I like the STI speed, but I also enjoy autocross and shifting a lot, If you’re a drag guy most people like the longer gears in the 5 speed and upgrade to straight cut gears, If you’re really getting crazy a dog box is going to give you lighting fast shifts. What power are you looking at achieving, what model Subaru do you have? also have more money for the swap (if you do one) then you think it's going to cost, it always cost more than you expect. Good luck and check this page on the Thread from Fuji (Page 1 Part 2 Shows what the DCCD is good for) http://mnsubaru.com/forums/showthread.php/28652-Fuji-VID-DCCD-in-action
I have a PPG 5 speed (1-4 straight cut). I like the slightly taller ratios for everyday bashing around. And it's nice to be able to hold a gear for longer. I didn't like the STi 6 speed because I'm not a fan of constantly rowing gears.
I personally like the idea of a 6 speed with JDM 5th and 6th in it. But in the end it is really going to boil down to your application and power.
i like the 6spd but with my turbo setup it allows me to not shift as much because of how it spools so quickly. if i could id have a 6spd with a legecy 6th gear
Well the strongest tranny for a Subaru probably is the 06+ STI 6-speed with straight cut PPG gears. But I don't know anyone that needs something that beefy other than WRC cars. ~Dan
I've heard people have had good luck putting Legacy gears in WRX transmissions. But I'd probably just get the STi tranny and call it a day.
I think the ratios in the 04-06 sti are terrible for just about everything. 07+ is an improvement, but 2nd is still too short.
well...... i dunno what the OP's setup is like... it might be a full out Drag car for all I know. The gearing isn't terrible for everything. Sometimes you NEED short gearing for what you're doing. Not my fault the USDM motor can't rev high.... The 6spd Gearing was made with performance in mind. Land of the rising sun performance....
Of course it's not your fault it can't rev. But it doesn't need revs neither LOL USDM motors can't rev? LOL, sure Land of the rising sun performance? LOL Back to topic The 6spd are pretty strong, both short and long ratio transmissions The PPG is also strong. It'll be a matter of 5spd or 6spd. Know that going with the 6spd, will require a little more to get the transmission working with the car.
You can break a PPG dogbox on stock horsepower from a WRX. It's simple. Get a 3/8" drill bit that is about 4 inches long. Put it into your choice of electric drill (battery or wired). Pick a spot on your forehead, just between the eyes, pull the trigger and make sure you bottom out the drill. Then go drag race.
I'm perfectly happy with my '05 6mt. I really don't see the issue with the gearing. If your powerband is short then you might, but I don't understand where all the whining is coming from. If you have decent boost from 4-4500rpm onward, I really don't see the issue.
Every car I've driven with one in it felt like I was shifting constantly to keep the revs at a reasonable level. 1st and 2nd ran out entirely too quickly for me, and there is no reason to be puttering around in 35mph zones in 4th. Yes, it's great at keeping you in the power band, but I absolutely despise daily driving it on city streets around town.
It is true that you have to enjoy rowing the box, which I do. The double and triple cone syncros make it so smooth that I like the feeling of shifting it a lot. Like that warm apple pie......
2nd is too short for autox in my opinion. Most courses are designed with a 60-65mph top speed in mind. There's almost never enough time to shift to 3rd, and when there is, downshifting is just another chance to screw up. While the speed of 3rd gear in an 04-06 is fun, it's just over with too quickly. I do have to admit that there was one autox course where I was able to keep it in 3rd for more than half of the course. I think that gave the short 3rd gear an advantage, but this is a rare situation.
Yeah. Can you have your cake and eat it too? It's tough. You give up one thing for the other, and then you're into the realm modifying a god damn Subaru. ****!
