when the fog lamp goes.. do you replace the whole lamp or the bulb?? havent looked, been to busy.. noticed one was out last night... if its a lamp style can you get brighter fog bulbs?? let the fun begin... (no I didnt hit search.. on a lunch break)
3 screws. Lamp comes out. Unclip wire. 1 screw. H3 bulb comes out. Then reverse. 55w stock. 100w optional.
H3 bulb. I can sell you them in up to 130W if you really want, but anything more than the stock 55W will, over time, oxidize the aluminum coating of the reflector and reduce the overall brightness of the lamp. I should take a picture of a fog that has been overlamped and one that wasn't The difference is pretty obvious. If you want an upgrade, the Hella 500 foglamp is the way to go. When i turn mine off at night I feel like I've put on blinders. The added light to the sides is great for spotting things on the edges of the roads. Like pedestrians, or deer. Oh, and make sure you get some PB Blaster or similar on the bolts before you take it out, or you'll be pulling the backing plates and drilling out the broken bolts and re-tapping the threads. Firsthand experience here. Best would be to drop the splash shields and spray them from the back side.
I should be getting commission from these guys... http://www.rallylights.com/hella/500.asp You want the fog pattern lights, either clear or amber (your call). If you call them and tell them you're an MNSubaru member, I understand you'll get a discount. I suggest getting the clear stone shields too. You can mount the lights without the brackets, but they won't be as steady. Kartboy (http://kartboy.com) sells a nicer set of mounting brackets, but they cost more too.
anything hotter than a 55w bulb in the stock fogs wiring harness will melt it. You can get the newest hella ff500 at your local wal-mart for $69, they are the newest revised version and have a clear housing instead of the fluted glass for more output.
No, even a 100W bulb will not melt the stock fog light harness (headlight harness is an entirely different matter). It will prevent the bulb from being as bright as it could be due to voltage loss, but it won't melt. A 130W bulb probably would melt the harness and other things too. The FF500 sold at Walmart is a driving light and not a fog light. Driving lights are narrow focus straight ahead and supplement high beams. Fog lights are wide spread and focused low to supplement low beams.
Because the FF500 has an aluminum coated reflector, 100W bulbs will, over time, oxidize it and reduce your light output. If you want a 100W driving beam that fits in the stock fog location, look for the Hella 1000FF. It has a magnesium reflector and can be run with 55, 100 or 130W bulbs.
anyone want to post some pictures of their cars/replacement/upgraded lights? I need to replace one of my fogs as well ( for the second time ) and would like to see some alternatives. Maybe something brighter...
The 500's in clear don't look all that much different than stock. Ignore the ricy driving lights in the middle. They're $40 lights that I used with 130W bulbs to supplement the light when I ran as one of the course opening cars at Shooting Star. Not very good lights, but I needed something quick. This is Gridlocked's car with Morettes and Hella 500 amber fogs We both used the Kartboy mounting brackets.
Word to that... On the passenger side, I managed to break 2 of the 3 bolts that attatch to the steel plate, tried drilling, and using a screw extractor, but the screw extractor broke, so I pulled the plate out, hit the bolts with a torch, and twisted them out with a pair of pliers. I also managed to break one of my aim gears, thinking the screw was a fastener...surprize, the subaru dealer don't sell just the gear either. I went with 55w tungsram gold, they really make the signs and other reflective materials light up...I really like them.
took less then 10 mins.. what is everyone whining about.. remover tabs for inner fender, undo cap of back of light install new bulb.. done...
Yeah, Nathan is right. If you're not taking the light out, it's easier to replace the bulbs by dropping the liner and accessing the bulb from the back. I would feel a bit stupid, but I was replacing the whole assembly, so there was no shortcut for me.
I wasn't telling you how to do it. the 3 screws always break, thats all. ^I did see this post and put two and two together,
