I am about to install my junkyard BajaT/FXT 5sp w/ 19k miles and noticed some axial play in the front diff. I want to know if this is normal. If it isn't is it a matter of adjusting the bearing retainers on the side of the case or should it be totally rebuilt or setup. (in which case I might go after the warranty on the trans I got). I know there are some people on here that rebuild these things with their eyes closed and could probablly tell me in a few seconds what i should do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for some piece of mind before I install it. Thanks, Chad
some shaft play is ok. How much are we talking about? There is no external adjustments that can be done.
Well, there is the slack in the circlip. But there is then an additional 0.012"-0.020" of travel. You can also feel the spider gears while pusing in. This might be normal but... The '02 trans I have is very tight with almost zero play (beyond the circlip) and you cannot feel the gears. But this trans has a different way of retaining the stubs so maybe that is the difference.
