I am about to install my junkyard BajaT/FXT 5sp w/ 19k miles and noticed some axial play in the front diff. I want to know if this is normal. If it isn't is it a matter of adjusting the bearing retainers on the side of the case or should it be totally rebuilt or setup. (in which case I might go after the warranty on the trans I got). I know there are some people on here that rebuild these things with their eyes closed and could probablly tell me in a few seconds what i should do. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am looking for some piece of mind before I install it.

    Thanks,
    Chad

Well, there is the slack in the circlip. But there is then an additional 0.012"-0.020" of travel. You can also feel the spider gears while pusing in. This might be normal but...

The '02 trans I have is very tight with almost zero play (beyond the circlip) and you cannot feel the gears. But this trans has a different way of retaining the stubs so maybe that is the difference.

If I move one side the other side does not move. So I don't think the bearing preload is off.
