Have already had a couple instances where the subie has gotten me through some clutch situations. Last nights being notable due to what this patch of ice did to some drive without symmetrical AWD.

Driving north on 35W at 5:30 and taking East Hennepin exit last night. I was going under the train bridge that crosses 35W and noticed a bit of melt dripping off the tracks onto the exit ramp and when I hit it, it turned out to be a good patch of ice. Drifted/slid a couple feet to the right but stayed on course and dont think I even let off the accelerator that much.

40 min later, was taking the East Hennepin entrance south onto 35W and saw all the lights just north of where I hit the patch earlier. Some Blazer or Explorer or something with a mashed in top was getting situated to go on to a flat bed. Didnt see ambulances, but they had the exit closed off. Granted, driver could have just been a knob and probably a few people had hit that in jettas or saturns or what have you and came out shiny side up, but man.. the subs definitely equals some peace of mind when the roads get dicey.

    Any other tales of victory?

Same here going on 94E exiting onto hwy 280. Thought it was a wet patch of melted snow but was a patch of ice. Hit the patch of ice going around the bend. Car slid sideways but as soon as it hit dry, it caught itself and was on its way.

    This.

This winter I drove a Subaru for about a week on virtually brand-new all-season tires. More scary situations in a week in that then the last 2 years in my Celica on 5-year-old Blizzaks.

I bleed blue and gold more than most, but they're not perfect, especially their first 10 years of ABS.

I suppose the Hankooks may have played a role. There is sometimes that first snowfall that catches you before the swap and makes stopping a real joy..
