The 2006 Donnybrooke Road Racing Revival
“Preaching the Gospel of Road Racing, 10 Turns at a Time”
    Brainerd International Raceway
    May 27-29 2006 (Memorial Weekend)
Please join us for Minnesota’s premier road racing event. This year’s event promises to be larger and more fun than ever.
The newly formed Snow States Autosports Club (SSAC) is the host organization. SSAC is a wholly owned subsidiary of Land O’ Lakes region SCCA. (No portion of this event is sanctioned by SCCA). SSAC is partnering with the National Auto Sports Association (NASA) to hold the event.

As you may be aware, NASA is the up and coming sanctioning body for road racing. They hold events all over the country this event is part of their Mid-West region expansion. NASA’s common sense approach to car classification and excellent methodology to getting people out and enjoying road racing is creating a huge following. This event is also their first time including vintage race groups and they are very excited to include VSCR and their members in this event.

This event is part of the NASA Mid-West region race series. Other NASA race events will be held at Road America, Blackhawk Farms, Mid-America Motorplex, Autobahn and Mid-Ohio. The event schedule will include Vintage racing on Saturday and Sunday and Current era racing on Saturday and Sunday. The NASA HPDE and Time Trials program will be held
all 3 days. NASA HPDE and Time Trials are open to all licensed drivers with street cars. The current era race groups will include American Iron, American Iron Extreme, Factory Five Cobra Challenge, Spec Miata, German Touring Cars, Honda Challenge and many, many others.

Event parties will be held on Saturday and Sunday. Food and beverages will be provided for event participants, crew and also event volunteers.
An exciting addition to this year’s event will be the Donnybrooke 3-lap Shootout. All race drivers are invited to enter this 3 lap handicap race. Each driver’s handicap will be based on the driver’s best time of the day. The shootout begins with a handicapped, staggered start, one car at a time. This handicap system is designed to bring all cars across the finish line at the same time after 3 laps. The shootout will be held at the end of
the day on Saturday and should be a very entertaining segue into the evening’s festivities. The $10 per car entry fee will be donated to the winning driver’s favorite charity.

Although a NASA competition license is required for all NASA sanctioned events, SSAC has negotiated a one event waiver of the license fee. All race drivers will need to submit a NASA competition license application. This will also include a copy of their current non-NASA competition license and a copy of the driver’s most recent medical checkup. There will also be an entry fee discount for NASA members. The event organizers are also looking for instructors for the lapping groups. Event discounts are offered to qualified instructors.

Entry costs will be $289 for the racing portion and $249 for HPDE/Time Trial
participants and will include a 1-year membership to NASA. A $40 discount is offered for existing NASA members. An additional $100 discount is offered to qualified drivers who are also willing to be instructors for the weekend. VSCR drivers are encouraged to submit their race entry and a copy of their medical form to Ardis Olson. Ardis handled registration for the previous SCCA/VSCR events at BIR and will be happy to assist VSCR members register for this event. She can be reached at 763-478-3540.
HPDE entrants and current era racers should use the NASA on-line race registration at www.nasamidwest.com. Registration for the event will be online soon.

We look forward to seeing all of you at the event. We hope to continue to grow this event and bring new faces into our congregation.

Thoughts and Rationale on the Schedule

Group A: Open Wheel. Formula TR, RSR
    SCCA’s FF/CFF/FV/Ffirst/F500/FC/CFC/FM,
    S2000/CSR/DSR, SRF, etc.

Group B: Small bore. Pro-7, Spec Miata, HC, SE-R, Pro Sedan, 944, USTCC,
    BG, SU, NABR, etc.
SCCA SSA/B/C, IT-A/B/C, SM, SMT, GTLite, FP, GP,
    HP, T2, T3, etc.

Group C: Big bore. ASC, PT, S7, AI, CMC, FFR, VVC
SCCA GT1/2/3, EP, SPO, SPU, AS, T1, ITE1, ITE2, etc.

    Group D: Vintage.

HPDE starts late on Saturday morning. This means that many drivers can come to the track on Saturday morning and avoid the expense of a motel for Friday night. The classroom sessions are split to allow for the different audience levels and lead instructors. They do get sessions on Monday.

I don’t know how many cars we can expect for each group. Once we have a better idea, we can revise the schedule to better fit our needs. NASA doesn’t require a schedule being published beforehand, but it is preferable.

Lunch is long by NASA standards on Saturday and Sunday, or at least going by the sample schedule we received. We need to bring the workers in to eat. We also have track touring going on during this time. The mid-morning and mid-afternoon breaks are mandatory, as not all corners have restroom facilities.

RSR and SRF run with open wheel. We need to populate this group, as there are may be very few open wheel cars otherwise. Last year, the drivers didn’t want a split start.

We’re done by early Monday afternoon. We will have fewer workers for this day, and they will want to get on the road before the main traffic rush.

The schedule is very tight. I don’t think that we can safely combine warm up and/or qualifying, given the speed differentials and different types of cars. We’ll need to warn the drivers that the clock keeps running even if we have to black flag all or red flag. Time certain, just as if we had a TV package. As one group comes off track, the next group will be entering the track.

For the HPDE groups, I would like to get them off track between turns 9 and 10. There are several gates there. This avoids the crossover in the pits when race groups are coming out. Race groups need to exit to the pits, so that tire temperatures can be taken and cars can be directed to impound. I had though of staging HPDE on the “wrong” side of the paddock return road, so that they can get on track while race groups are coming off, but this creates problems for grid. As soon as the last race car passes pit zero, HPDE will enter the pits behind that car and head out onto the track.

Worker and crew rides at the end of the day on Saturday and Sunday. Any driver who has a car that can take a passenger and is willing to chauffeur workers and crew. These are the people who rarely get to see the track at speed.

Given the tight schedule, we should warn drivers about blowing the checkered flag, as they will run into the next race session and will be charged the appropriate entry fee for the session that they merge into.

There is no down time between sessions. It’s a pain but is the only way we can fit all groups into a reasonable day. This means that we will have to utilise hot tows wherever possible.

Monday has “fun” races, non-points. Those racing for NASA points can leave on Sunday and get a head start. Those who stay and want to play ….

I put open wheel first, thinking that they are fairly quiet. We could switch to Vintage being “Group A” and open wheel/SR being “Group D”, but I though that those old vintage guys might want to sleep in a little.

Australian Pursuit Race on Saturday is preceded by 3 HPDE sessions, so there will be ample time to grid the cars in order.

Hi everyone, just a quick note about an upcoming event on May 27, 28 &
29 at Brainerd International Raceway. This year we are teaming up with NASA to put on an event that will satisfy just about any road racing
enthusiast. Please read the enclosed attachment to explain the Snow States Autosports Club and click on the attached link for more information. We are having a mix of different classes from open wheel, vintage, closed wheel and several drivers education groups.

Since this is not an SCCA or LOL event, No Membership is needed to
participate in this event as a volunteer. We are going to supply lunch
and a party both Saturday and Sunday for everyone. Camping is free for all workers and there will be drawings for door prizes.

Since the gate will be open 24 hours a day starting on Friday, all you need
to do is sign the waiver at the gate to register.

Meetings will be held at Mom & Pops all 3 days at 7;30 am and I have
attached a tentative schedule for the event.

We are going to try some new things like an Australian Pursuit Race on
Saturday, possibly a Drifting event one evening and on Monday the last
session will be done early in the afternoon so we all can get home early.

To update everyone about the current status of SCCA and BIR. If you
don't already know, the Central Division of SCCA will be splitting up into 2
separate divisions with Area 5 keeping the Cen-Div name and Area 4
becoming the Great Lakes Division. To get the required number of National races in the Central Division, Area 5 needs to have at least one more track besides Blackhawk Farms and Road America to hold National races. At this time the Milwaukee Mile and Autobahn have not been approved for holding that level of race and it may never happen. As a result BIR is now getting new and increase visibility with SCCA National to have it re-approved to hold SCCA events. The current news is that they are working on different options to discuss with the track management to get BIR re-approved to hold SCCA events. While we are not looking at SCCA events to happen this year, we may have dates on the calendar in 2007.

Please e-mail back to me if you have interest in attending this event or have any questions.

it is kind of boring up here, but there is a go-kart track about a half mile from the track, but not too much to do around here.

it sounds like sat the most people will be around, that would be cool if we all met up somewhere, i know where just about everything is around here so if anyone needs to find something or if we need a place to meet it would be easy to figure out.

if the most people will be there sat then we should set up a time and place to meet.

i.e.- meet by the tunnel entrance by the tower(at the start of 1/4mile), at let's say somewhere around 11-12.

just an option feel free to suggest other places or times.

i will be up by BIR this weekend. i am going up to a friends cabin by lake edwards and lake molly. i wont have internet up there, so chances of orginizing anything are prolly nil. but i will keep on the look out for some subies.

we might try and swing by BIR to watch some racing not sure though. and we are definately going to hit up kart-country while we are up there. maybe we will run into you guys.

keep an eye out for a green legacy wagon, with 5 ppl in it

    have a good weekend.

Oh ya, all these photos have not been touched. i just pulled them out of the camera, uploaded them to photobucket, and copied the links to here. I also forgot to slow down the shutter speed, so everything looks like it is parked. Oh well, next time.

What a hot weekend, both on and off the track. I volunteered all 3 days and had a great time! A very nice bunch of people both volunteering and driving. I worked timing in the tower Saturday and Sunday and kept cool. Big thanks to any and all who worked the corners, the heat was incredible.

The worker rides Saturday and Sunday night were a lot of fun. Saturday night, I got a great ride in Gairloch's MR2 (thanks for everything Jeff) and another guy's BMW M3, sorry I forgot his name. The BMW's 6-pt harness was pretty comfy. Sunday night I got a ride with an instructor in his 2006 STI. Thanks, Jeff! Wow! Very fast.

Sunday I was very lucky in that I was allowed to take my car (that's my car above, "FUNSUBY" ) out for some track time with Jeff the instructor to learn the line. This lead to me running in two sessions on Monday, again with Jeff. Let's just say I found my personal limit before my car did. Jeff kept saying, "keep it floored" and, while I trusted his judgement, my brain was yelling, "back off, back off!" I never would have guessed my car could go that fast down the ~1/2 mile straight away and continuing through the long sweeper or through the tight corners. By the end of the 2nd session I passed a few of the slower cars on the front straight and dogged a few more through the corners on the backside of the track.

It was a great learing experience and they make it a very safe event. If anyone ever has the opportunity to work or drive in a NASA event like this, I highly recommend it. I was in a bone stock 2006 WRX wagon and had a great time!

I have a few pics that I'll try to add tomorrow.

    A couple questions:

Are they going to be doing anymore of these throughout the summer?

I bet you cant do it on a drivers permit, right? lol

Maybe if they do another, i will beg and plead my dad to go up there with me and run it in the G :)

It was a fantastic weekend! Thank you for tracking me down and volunteering, Amy. I hope the time spent in the air conditioned timing & scoring booth, right over the track, listening to all the corner workers as stuff happens made taking the time worth it. Oh, and the free track time ;p

I hope to get to meet more of you guys at future events! Right now there isn't anything lined up in MN but the regional director, Dave Royce, expressed interest in having a second HPDE only event at BIR if there's enough people to justify it.
