So I never made a project thread detailing the things i've been up to with the ol derpy since I've bought it. This will be my attempt at a project thread. This is when I bought it in January of 2012, so I've owned it for almost a year. The first round of mods came about three months later when I picked up an STI up pipe, Invidia downpipe, and Fast Motorsports catback. I had Nuke tune it a few months later.
Here are the pictures from the install. It also got a grimmspeed EBCS at this time. Most recently, it's received a few new bits. It also has a grimmspeed license plate relocation kit, heat shield, and master cylinder brace. It recently went into the shop for some more fun. Things it's getting this time: ACT HDSS clutch, street light flywheel, Spec B aluminum control arms, STI engine mounts, trans mount, and pitch stop mount. That's about it so far. Next thing is further suspension work. Sway bars, bushings, endlinks, shocks, struts, etc.
ACT has no idea when they are going to get more of the correct flywheels in so this is still in the shop waiting. Pretty ****ing piss poor customer service so far IMO. Unless you happen to have one sitting around, or know of another company that has a single mass that will work with the ACT clutch.
I still have that streetlite for the SB5 that came out after 16k if you want to give it a whirl. Pretty sure that's what you need.
Fms works just fine. Tips are recessed because iirc there are ver very few wagon specific fitments but other than that it works just fine. The slip joints aren't the best but if you use better clamps or weld them its fine. I got mine for 350 to my door so I'm happy. Used an invidia downpipe though. Dunno, if you iz at morries mtka then you did. More will be in stock soon and its already paid for so I'm going to go wirh new. Thanks for the offer though dude.
Well, ended up with a prolite instead of a streetlite. 10lbs ftw. Gotta say I love the difference. Overall it feels like a whole new car. Turns out my stock transmission mount was busted, and after 115k miles having solid trans and engine mounts as well as fresh lightweight control arms completely transformed the driving experience. Looking forward to putting some more funds aside to continue to freshen up the underside. I'll be going with the spec b aluminum trailing arms and rear arms when money allows. Next on the list is likely sway bar bushings. I may do an aftermarket rear bar at the same time, but that also requires reinforcing the mounting points as they are a weak link in that system. Suspension is down the line, but I have a feeling that these are not the original struts/shocks. They feel too solid to have 115k on them. I also believe the turbo was replaced at some point. 115k with absolutely zero shaft play. none. No signs of oil blowby, no oil in the intercooler, nothing. With the stock turbos being a known failure item, my hunch is that it was replaced under warranty by the previous owner. This does change my power plans for the car. I see no reason to go with a bigger turbo until this one shows signs of being on it's way out. That being said, the stock intercooler has got to go. They don't like holding 18psi, and the end tanks separate from the core. I wish grimmspeed was done with theirs, but as this is not the case I will probably try to find a perrin or AVO unit from the LGT forum. If I can't find one used, I may save up for a Process West unit. They're the best in the market, but they don't come cheap. In other news, I really need to get this thing tinted. Oh hey, track time. 14.1 with a fairly soft launch. I aim to improve upon that time this year. Credit to ofspunk7 for the video footage.
now just looking for tires. I want something that will handle some track events, and dz101s IMO aren't that tire. Might be throwing those up for sale on the cheap after I get a new set.
Yeah, I bought those as a decent street tire. Probably won't cut it for track use. Looks good though. Now you need to lower it about an inch.
I am bad at updating this ****. So, the springs and pedals came and those have been in for a bit. Ends up sitting pretty on Readymix's old whels. Aww snap. I also had a modgasm and bought a perrin intercooler, forge bypass valve, and subtle solutions alternator cover. Most recently, in preparation for proving grounds this weekend, it received some more goodies. It got new endli ks from moog (the problem solver!), new polyurethane sway bar bushings all the way around from energy suspension, and a set of sway bar mount reinforcement brackets from AVO. The full set of stoptech brake pads should be here tomorrow. Out with that old crusty **** and in with the new. That's all that's new for now, more to come...hopefully soon.
So almost a year after the last post, and a damn long time since I've updated the actual progress of the car, I'm about two months out from being home. I've done some buying and ordering and accumulating of parts in preparation for the welcome-home road trip i'm taking the 2nd half of may into the 1st week of june. No pics at this time, but here's a list of things that will be going on to the car. Purchased: Venair Silicone hose kit (replaces vacuum lines, coolant lines, etc AEM Dry-flow air filter AVO front sway bar AVO rear sway bar AVO front and rear endlinks Koyo Aluminum radiator Turkeylord Special blue tee replacements Grimmspeed TMIC (installed thanks to Yusef and Sheen!) Centric Cryo rotors front and rear Centric posi-quiet pads Prosport Halo boost gauge AVO gauge pod STI aluminum dead pedal (to complete the set) New OEM grille (last one was damaged when a large piece of particle board commited suicide in the middle of nebraska.) Current one will become some sort of project. In progress: The work wheels needed some love. They're currently being refinished by That Wheel Guy. I went with fully polished lips and a mettalic gunmetal for the faces, with black painted barrels. They should look ****ing stellar, and @readymix old wheels finally got the love they deserve To be purchased: SS brake lines Rust repair on the driver's side rear quarter panel (facking subaru tin) On the car already before the deployment but after the last update: Grimmspeed's Radiator shroud That should take care of me before the road trip. Afterwards, we'll have to see what happens. Still have lots of plans, but may not be keeping the car if i can figure out a way to pick up a skyline. Either way, should make an excellent road trip car for its first trip out east.
At least one part of my car went to someone that gave a **** Glad to hear these will still be rolling someone's car around. Will they be done in time for C&C?
They'll be done by the time I get home. Powder is done for the faces, lips are polished (and the bent one replaced), hardware is all polished, barrels are done, should be just waiting on final assembly then tires. Going to go with Continental Extremecontact DW in either 225 or 235/40/18. Leaning towards the 235s because moar. May do the white stenciled letters.
I kick my own ass about 4-6 times per month for not buying her when i had the chance. Looking forward to seeing you back home HerpaDerpa! You need to come over with Jenni and meet the new addition.
Yeah, i'll definitely swing by. Funny thing with the works, I'm pretty much in what a brand new set would cost, so I guess i didn't save anything afterall. Spreading the money involved over two years helped with the sticker shock but I added it up and realized where it was at
Honestly though, you now have a custom finish on them. That's pretty 'baller' as well. You arne't going to get painted inside cans and custom colored centers off the shelf with those things. Not sure if you can change your order or not, but they do make different finishes for three-piece wheel bolts (hold the center to the rim). You could get black or polished, I know I've seen anodized heads as well. Just a thought, while you're blowing cash on those wheels, might as well go all out
Yeah, i'm pretty stoked. I'll have to really throw down the gauntlet and challenge the manhood, humanity, courage, and virility of anyone who thinks they can dare buy the wheels when i'm done with them. Alex (That Wheel Guy) polished each bolt individually. Gonna go with those and the polished lips. Haven't quite yet decided on center caps yet. I may switch to the black and silver 'W' work centercaps.
been a minute since I've updated this New ****: refinished the Work wheels, wrapped them in Continental Extremecontact DW. Went with a staggered offset and a custom 2-stage color with the powdercoat on the faces. a set of BBS RKs for the track some federal 595 RSR tires for the track Motul dot 5.1 brake fluid Project Mu rear pads Endless racing front pads Techna-fit SS brake lines Centric cryo rotors Whiteline rear camber kit whiteline rear diff mount kit AVO 23mm front 20mm adjustable rear sway bars kartboy endlinks Grimmspeed intercooler Koyo radiator Venair silicone vacuum and coolant lines AEM dry-flow filter turbo started showing signs of going last weekend as I started to get some smoke out of the exhaust, so that's currently being rebuilt at Midwest Turbo Connection in Wisconsin. Should have it back early this week, goal is to get everything installed, get the car aligned and dialed in for Powercruise MN at the end of July. As she sits: On the track at Brainerd International Raceway: dem wheels (centercaps have since been switched):
MOAR UPDATE Did some things and stuff. New stuff: Technafit SS brake lines Endless MX72 front brake pads Project Mu B-force rear brake pads MOTUL DOT 5.1 brake fluid Got my Federal 595 RS-R tires installed on my refinished BBS RK wheels stats: 215-45R 17 (wider than my 225 40 18s!) on 17x7 wheels Had a track weekend. Powercruise, an Aussie invention, comes to the US in MN, so I had to go to that. Found out the new tires make a massive, massive difference in what speed I can carry through the turns. Pics of new stuff and track weekend with my friends The RX-7 has secrets, the 2002 has an SR20-DET, and the S10 has a 6 liter V8. Thanks for looking
Derpy- Are the Project Mu pads the ones in the green shrink wrap that is marked "Only for the United States"? The box states "Asbestos Free". Does that mean the rest of the world gets the good old regular, cancer causing, asbestos containing brake pads? That hardly seems right. I would expect other nations of the world to be sneaking cancer causing substances INTO the products they ship to us. Although I guess it does say "Made in Japan", not "Made in Iran", or "Made in Afghanistan", or "Made in China', or "Made in Some Other Third World **** Hole That Hates Americans".
