This is the official information and discussion thread for the 2012 Fall Colors cruise which will occur on Saturday, September 29 2012. This year the cruise will feature gratuitous mass consumption of glorious, slow smoked unfortunate mammals. Here is the "pre thread" in case you forgot:

    http://mnsubaru.com/threads/save-the-date-fall-colors-animal-consumption-cruise.39543/

But Surly, I have the attention span of a goldfish on a raging PCP bender coupled with the work ethic of a United Emirates trust fund kiddy. You can't possibly expect me to be bothered with clicking AND reading... What is the Fall Colors/Animal Consumption Cruise again?

    Glad you asked... I guess.

The Fall Colors cruise is a (mostly) annual MNSubaru event. It is a leisurely, relaxing cruise along some of the most beautiful, mostly paved roads in the region. This cruise is a family-friendly, low key event focusing on enjoying the scenery and the company of fellow Subaru enthusiasts. It is NOT a "fun-run", skreetracing exhibition, or performance proving ground. FRS radios are strongly encouraged. The hoonery normally associated with them is not.

This year the cruise will take us through the St. Croix River Valley which offers some of the most breath-taking fall scenery available in the state without trekking to near-as-makes-no-difference-to-Canada. We will be sampling some of the best views offered on both the MN and WI bluffs of the St. Croix.

Our destination this year is Big-Butz BBQ out of Siren, WI. BBB is an award winning, peer revered artisan smoke house and small-batch, craft BBQ sauce purveyor whose goods are now shipped and enjoyed around the country. The owner (Tom Porter) also happens to be a old personal friend of mine.

    http://bigbutzbbqsauce.net/

We will be bringing our twin cities metro and Duluth/northern MN members together for this event. The north cruise will begin near Duluth, the TC Metro cruise will begin in the parking lot of the now-defunct Stillwater Depot on Main street at the northern edge of downtown Stillwater.

With its combination of stunning fall scenery, fine BBQ and good company, this cruise is not to be missed!

    Price:
Cost for the rib dinner is $16/head. Camping and other expenses are not included in the $16. Prepaid meals are required to participate in the cruise and eat with us.

**kids meals now available for $5.50. These will include a hotdog (maybe two), a veggie, chips and possibly a dessert. We'll firm this up shortly.**

    Payment Details:
    Itinerary:

Departure for the TC Metro cruise will be 10:00am. I highly recommend you have a good breakfast before departure. There will be time for a short lay over in Tailor's Falls and possibly Grantsburg depending on which group arrives first, but beyond that there will not be an opportunity to stop off for bathroom/food breaks.

    Departure for the Duluth/North cruise:
    <<reserved>>

Both cruises will make their way towards Grantsburg, WI where we will meet around 12:30pm.

From there, we will cruise east towards Siren, WI together. Our arrival time will be between 2:30-3:00. A BBQ rib dinner will be waiting for us when we arrive.

After dinner, we will adjourn to the Eagles Landing Campground for the requisite morally questionable MNS cruise tomfoolery and wildlife bludgeoning. For those who lack camping gear, have a low tolerance for poor personal hygiene and/or think they'll have problems with the sight of raccoon blood, the St Croix Casino Hotel is located just north and within walking distance of the campgrounds.

Those who wish to return home should be able to reach Duluth or the TC's by mid-evening.

There will also be an E85 caravan departing for Luck either immediately after dinner or after checking in to the hotel/campgrounds. Luck is about 20 miles south of Siren.

We might have some kind of cruise the next day if there is interest. If we do it will probably be an impromptu deal.

**Driving Routes and Lodging details to follow in a subsequent post.**

Please post in this thread if you intend to join us and/or to confirm receipt of payment.

    Accommodations:
Camping and Hotel options will be available!

First option (for those brave enough)

    Eagles Landing Campground

Located on the same property as the casion.
A much cheaper option of accommodations than a hotel. Cost will be 10 to 25 dollars per site depending on numbers committed.

    http://danbury.stcroixcasino.com/pdf/EaglesLanding.pdf

Second option (for the city slickers)

    St. Croix Casino
Located right north of the campground.
Cost for a standard room is $100.00
Cost for a suite vary from $120.00 to $175.00

Best of all, you can stumble between both locations with minimal effort!

How many miles is this going to be? Would be good to know for us E85 folks so we can track down a gas station.

According to the google maps links in the "routes" post, TC to Grantsburg is 70.9 miles and Grantsburg to Siren is 52.4 miles.

I believe there is E85 available at the Holiday/stop-a-sec in Webster which is 6 miles west of Siren. With any luck, by that time I'll have a keen interest in figuring out an E85 run myself... ;)

Keep the cruise off piste as much as possible - lots of great "alphabet soup" back roads in Big Whiskey.

This cruise is all about taking in the colors. I have quite a few alphabet roads on tap from road rallying around WI. We'll do a fun run another time.

Duly noted, just thought those same roads would include copious colors with or w/o shenanigans.

    I defer to the liters.

I'll have a final lock-in date soon. I would expect 9/1 or so to be the cutoff. Last time I spoke with Tom he needed a month.

Gimp here are your E85 stations from MPLS to your spot.

You can grab your own map from this LINK <---- CLICKY
You can also download it all to a Excel Doc if needed. Below are my screen shots from a 15 mile/E85/Public Station search. However, @ 15 - 17 MPGs, you should be able to drive well over 3.5 hours before you need to fill up. I am usually above 1/4 of a tank after a 3.5 hour drive up north.

I called the Holiday in Webster and they do not carry E85 anymore.

Luck is probably the next best option at about 20 miles south of Siren.

Yeah, they didn't show up on the map. The locator above has never let me down.

There is a bar in the middle of the trailer park in Luck... can't go wrong making a detour after the dinner!

This option is confirmed. Tom just needs a rough count of the kids (and adults for that matter). He'll to do it for us near cost which will keep us at $5 or less for a hotdog (maybe two), chips, carrots, juice and possibly a treat.

I had to make the search within 15 miles of the directions. So that is a 15 mile radius while driving to and from the cruise.

Those are the closest stations to the route. Call it what you will.

I'll put together a route from Siren to Luck for an E85 run either right after dinner or after we check in to the campgrounds/hotel. I'm sure we can take a few 5 gallon containers with us along the way just in case.
