In honour of the late Colin McRae, a convoy of an estimated 1100 Subaru cars stretching 30 miles drove in formation from McRae's home on Saturday August 30, 2008. Nine hours and 300 miles later, the convoy arrived at Prodrive’s headquarters in Banbury, having been cheered along the way by thousands of fans who stood on every available motorway bridge on route.

“Literally every bridge had people waving and cheering us along with many hanging the Saltire from the railings.” said Grant Hendry, who led the McRae Gathering convoy. “It turned what was an already memorable event into a truly amazing and emotional occasion.”

On Sunday morning, the convoy re-convened at Prodrive’s headquarters before being led up the M40 by Colin McRae’s original 1996 Impreza rally car. In a fitting finale to the event, a sign almost half a mile long and made up of 1086 Subaru's spelled out COLIN MCRAE along with the Scottish Saltire in a new official Guinness World Record – smashing the previous record by more than 800 cars. The cars then broke a second Guinness World Record, previously held by the Mitsubishi Lancer Register, by creating the largest parade of cars as they left the Prodrive test track.

It is estimated that the event has raised nearly £40,000 for the McRae charities.

Very cool. It's still sad to think that he's gone.

But what I don't understand is the extreme amounts of leg humping done by Subaru fans as if Colin never drove anything else in WRC or otherwise.

Matt, I understand your position and appreciate your opinion, but keep in mind you are in a Subaru forum and your comment might be taken the wrong way causing un-necessary replies. Your position could be worded to get your point across in a less potentially offensive way. Who cares who organizes an event of this magnitude, it is a very cool thing to do for a rally icon.

oh he is just jealous cause no-one ever wanted to push an evo in a rally... probably scared the pedals would snap or something.... ;)

That is a spectacular site to behold! I am very impressed that they were able to drive in formation for that long.

Also kind of fitting that this is what shattered the EVO's record for parade length.

    RIP: Colin

My position? I was just asking for some explanation. What could possibly be more offensive than an Evo owner posting on a Subaru forum?
The one "driver" that did push an Evo in rally recently wrecked it because he "lifted" over a jump. Twice. X-Games this year and last.

Matt, Thanks for the PM's explaining your position. Sorry for the edit of your posts, I just felt that some of the wording could have been interperted the wrong way by some members. I appreciate your desire to bring together owners of different makes and models of cars for a better appreciation of motorsports in general. I'm sure that the Fords or Citroens that Colin drove as well as all of his road racing cars would turn the head of even the most loyal Subaru die-hard.

Wow. That was an amazing gathering.

While Colin may have driven other kinds of cars in rally competition, Subaru/prodrive was his first, and Subarus big break, into professional rallying and WRC. It's hard as a Subaru owner not feel some ownership of him being the first Subaru "hero".

I was sorry to never have met him and held a silly hope that someday he'd make it to Ojibwe or LSPR rallies here in the states. He and Travis had a bet at the 2007 XGames that the loser had to co-drive for the winnner for an event. Colin lost the bet with another spectacular roll, and I had hoped that maybe one of these events would be the one where is settled the debt. Alas, he died before the bet could be settled.

But I do feel a bit lucky to have met his first Subaru co-driver, Derek Ringer. Derek is currently Travis Pastrana's co-driver in the Rally America Rally Championship. At Ojibwe this year I lucky enough to get Derek to sign the dash of my '93 Legacy SS that I am currently building to resemble Colin's '91-'92 Rothmans Legacy rally car that he co-drove with Colin to the '91 & '92 British Rally Championship. When Derek saw my Legacy he said, "It's been a long time since I've seen one of these." (imagine it with a Scottish accent :) )

The car is not there yet but I'm working on it.

Awesome display of cars, and memorial!

It would be awesome to do a line up of cars for a 30 mile cruise of some sort. On good terms, like celebrating x amount of years of WRX’s in the states. We could have a cruise here in Minnesota!
