I commented on that when I first saw it, too. They have a sense of humor, apparently.

if you look around 1:04 it appears that the seatbelt in the smart car failed? it is amazing to see how the smart car is thrown away from the collision. Those cars probably make alot more sense in europe where even semi's are smaller than they are here, and that mercedes would be a "large" car

I wonder who foots the bill for these 'Deathmatches'. As much fun as it is to watch a small Merc take out a tiny Merc, and a pair of Chevies lay waste to one another, there can't be any legit reason to do it. I just have visions of salivating science nerds standing around saying, "Heh heh, what can we crash next, heh heh ?"

^ Today marks the 1st day of my quest to become one of the people that get to crash cars for fun. And get paid for it.

    http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/ and http://www.euroncap.com/home.aspx

It's a little more scientific then "zomg run these two cars at eachother." Those dumbies have a large number of sensors that can replicate human body injuries.

Thank this type of goverment interaction for things like seatbelts, airbags, and crumple zones. :)

As crazy-looking as that smart crash was, the bel-air crash was much more violent on the driver. Ouch!!

/\/\/\ what the moose said. The data gathered from crashes are WHY cars aren't made like the Bel Air anymore.

Credit me with some sense, I know why we do crash testing. But crashing cars into a reliable and repeatable chunk of concrete or steel yields accurate and comparable data.

However, all these "Deathmatches" seem to do is make people wince if they happen to own the car that comes out worse. For example, why crash the Bel Air into a Malibu ? Why not a Lacetti ? From a scientific standpoint, these tests seem to be more for amusement than anything else (and they *are* amusing), since the only demonstrable result is, "This is what happens if car model A crashes into car Model B." The results cannot be extrapolated to illustrate what happens if one of the cars happens to be Model C.

And I guess if the people crashing the cars work for the government, the insurance companies, or the car companies, then the answer to my original question is "We pay for it." Well, if I'm paying for it, at least I get to be entertained with the results on YouTube

Well, if you would have read the description on youtube, NIHS did the crash for their 50th anniversary, and to demonstrate 50 years of advancement in vehicle construction.

The person in the Malibu would most likely have survived. No intrusion into the passenger compartment at all. The windshield didn't even buckle. I'm wondering if the person in the Bel Air even had legs anymore.

The last 15 years have been a huge improvement in safety cage construction due to the alloys they are using now in key areas of the structure. My first gen Legacy don't even compare to the newer cars. The B pillars are a joke compared to newer stuff.
