Ive been getting a CEL the last couple days (misfire). The car doesn't idle well. Put my stock bpv back on and noticed oil in the intercooler. After driving for a little bit it really started to smoke especially on startup and now it doesnt even like to idle at stoplights. It still builds boost but is way down on power and it doesn't sound right... Decided to park it before I did more damage than i need to...
Any good mechanics out there want a side job? Maybe this would be a good opportunity for an upgrade?
IDK, what to do, let alone if it is even is or just the turbo...
Advise, help, and donations appreciated, lmk!!!

how much oil in the intercooler? is it building the same amount of boost as normal? are you losing a lot of oil?

    1) not a whole lot (not like a puddle or anything, but a nice glazing
    2) it does build boost, but its down on power and honestly I didnt want to push it and possibly damage things worse than that already are
    3) didnt check my oil level, but its definely burning a lot

sounds maybe more like piston rings - check compression on the cyl that was missing

I say if you are going to be pulling the engine and repairing it. Definitely upgrade! Turbo, Cams (which might need springs and other misc. upgrades), Pistons, Rods, the list goes on, you don't tear into the internals of engine often, so I would make it worth it...

As for repair advise, would you be doing this yourself or taking it somewhere to get the work done?

my advice, get the problem fully diagnosed. right now it's just us guessing behind a keyboard - get the compression checked to find out if that's actually your problem.

Unless the turbo is hampering exhaust/intake flow, why would it cause the car to have such trouble with idling? That, to me, seems a little off and would lead me to consider some other culprit.

Or...maybe the blown turbo is putting so much oil into the intake side that it is somehow messing with the spark plugs? I would check all the plugs to see how they look

Do a compression test and then go from there.

Throw a Tactrix cable on it and log it. It'll be obvious if it is a single cylinder problem or the turbo. If you need to borrow one PM me. I'll be going through EP in the AM.

    Ray

Oops forgot. your car has a built in code reader no need to use a Tactrix cable. Read the misfire code. Is it a single cylinder misfiring or are all cylinders misfiring. All points towards the turbo. A single cylinder points towards a bad valve, or ring or ring land problem.

Like others have said, a compression check will quickly tell you if it is a cylinder issue. Rough idle, down on power while still producing boost, oil consumption, smoke, etc. are very common signs of a broken ringland. I would know, it happened to me. The best thing to do is get it checked out. The longer you run it with a broken ringland will cause more scaring on the cylinder wall.

If you're lucky, it might be something else, but I doubt it... sorry.

Also, as others have said, if it does require an engine rebuild, it's a good time for upgrades. Get forged pistons, throw in new pumps, new bearings, etc. Also, probably throw a new clutch, lightweight fly-wheel, etc... whatever you had wanted.

Its the turbo... Upgrade time, im thinkin 20g or FPgreen!

Compressions fine, the turbo was just pukin oil and causing all the smoke...

Turbo replacement and upgrades are stressful when they're ur DD!!!

Glad to hear compression all checked out. That could have been alot worse! My internet suggestion, not based on any kind of experience, is the 20g. Most of the comparison's I saw went this route.

P.S. - I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night.

Good luck with that ebay TMIC - I had one that didn't quite fit right. I made it work but it wore a hole in my AC line and it was a pain to get on and off. Hopefully you'll have better luck though.

Not too worried, to be honest, I'm not doing most of the install (I'm not much of a mechanic, I know cars, its my job, but i leave the wrenching up to the experts). And I have much faith in my installer... Excited for the outcome, thats for sure, at this point though, I just want everything to be done with and for things to go smoothly (like that ever happens)... We'll see, getting closer everyday!

agreed rotated would have made it easy but with putting in the tgv deletes he will have the intake off anyway so wont be to bad.
