For $700 needs a crank pulley and a belt. has a dented front fender and a cracked windshield.160,000 miles, said it runs strong but starts hard in very cold weather.. Is 700$ worth it or no? thanks
what year? the early SVX has wider wheels than the later ones and they (the early ones) tend to have wheel bearing issues. how rusty? AWD? is the crank OK? sometimes a bad crank pulley can trash the keyway on a crank. what sort of shape is the transmission in? a hard start in cold could mean that it might need a new alternator, spark plugs/wires or maybe just a new battery. if it isnt rusty 700 isnt a horrible deal.
its a 92 no rust at all he said the tranny is strong. i will have to ask him about the crank. it is AWD. leaks a little oil. i have heard good things about these opposing 6 engines
the engine is awesome. But it's a big, heavy car with gobs of torque....they eat transmissions. Hard to say, they're very cool cars. with pretty much every luxury gismo they could think of. Which means things tend to fail.... $700 is suspiciously cheap for the condition you're describing. I'd go over it with the finest of combs.
that is very important. if this will be your only car and it is your last 700 it is probably not a good deal. if it is a toy and you have plenty of money laying around to blow on a 18 year old grand touring coupe then it might be fun.
That price isnt that unheard of....They are a very solid car capible of lasting A LONG TIME, we have one that STILL comes in for routine maint that has 480K (last she was in) 2 transmissions, original engine.
totally saw this on cl look at the black one that needs a new rear diff for 600obo. if you dont i will lol
As long as the crank is serviceable I'd go for it. Hell, if I had an extra garage space I'd buy it myself. As was said, if this is supposed to be your daily - bad plan. If you want something cool and unique to play with go for it. There is basically NO market for SVXs - people just about give them away all the time. Just do your due diligence and make sure you know what you are getting into.
The reason he said he is selling for cheap is becuase he doesnt have the extra money to fix so it just sits in his garage. The only problem is getting it back to rochester from the cities since it starts and runs but cant charge the battery since there is no belt. so im trying to come up with a plan.
I have a '97 SVX, and they are great cars, but they are expensive to maintain. Being 18 years old, it will have it's issues, and if possible you should verify that the transmission is still shifting strong and smooth, and visually check the level and condition of the fluid. If the transmission is still good, the first thing you should do to the car (after getting it running and back on the road of course) is install an aftermarket transmission cooler to extend the life of the tranny. Windshield replacement is also expensive for these cars, and the supply of OEM windshields is diminishing (depending on what color factory tint it has), so be aware of that too. As others have mentioned, if you are buying this as your primary means of transportation, I would not recommend it. But, as a second "fun car" I'd say go for it! The FAQ section of this website is a good place to answer some questions too.
+1 on the repair cost issue, it's certainly not a cheap car. It is fun though, although I wouldn't ever rely on it as my only mode of transportation. The transmission and rear wheel bearings can be problems, as was already mentioned, and it's a very heavy car for it's size. Also, if you plan to run a radar detector, MnPASS, GPS, etc... they can sometimes have trouble with the Titanium Dioxide coating on the windshield. My MnPASS works maybe half of the time. The sunroof motor also has a tendency to fail; well not really fail, but not be able to open it without some assistance. Call it personality. Also, check it over for leaks. Valve Cover gaskets seem to be a recurring theme, as well as the rear main seal and a few others. Not super common, but they are very old cars. Be prepared for cold hands in the winter though since the heat will only blow out the defroster and foot vents. I don't have A/C, but I've heard about some weirdism with that system too when it comes to how it vents. And yes, the windshields are obscenely expensive. I believe an OEM one is ~$1000 for the glass alone. But $700 seems like a pretty good deal provided you're OK with cracked glass. Some people can't stand them, but I love mine, even if it's been a total money pit. Is this one an L or an LS-L?
