Anyone else done it on their car? I've done it to my old Impreza, but the fitting I used had a smaller inner-diameter... thus, probably slowed down the coolant flow as it normally would through the throttlebody. This time, I'm trying to find a bigger hose to slide the TB hoses into it and clamp them in place. I don't know if it will hold. If you have done it, where did you get your fitting/connector from and how did you do it?
For those who havn't done it, it's an inexpensive modification that keeps hot coolant from heating up the throttlebody in which heats up the air passing through it into the motor. There's two lines (one inlet; one outlet) connecting into the throttlebody that allows coolant to flow through the throttlebody. The coolant instead doesn't go into the throttle body and goes back into the engine. All this mod is is to get these hoses unplugged from the throttlebody and connect them to each other by inserting a two-sided male fitting (has to withstand the heat of hot coolant) or use what I want to use to take advantage of full coolant flow. Some people reported a 2-3 hp increase in the last few hundred rpms. It is currently on my old Impreza which showed no sign of the throttle plate freezing open and survived through two winters now.
Heh, we tried this on Steve's RS. Didn't notice much of a difference at all. 2 or 3 hp is well within the margin of error for most measurement devices if you ask me.
Ya, I did that when I ported and polished my tb. I noticed a difference, but I also do some porting along the way. As for the freezing tb, that is crap. The tb will never freeze, unless you trow some water on in and let it sit over night when it about 30 below. I just used a couple of brass fittings and some hose clamps and it was done. I might still have a couple, and if not, I could probably borrow some from work. I think the fittings were 1/8th inch barbed fitting. I will have to check. Russ
I was going to smooth out the throttlebody inlet while I do the TB bypass mod, also. What did you use to port the TB, Russ? Dremel Tool? It should allow a bit better airflow into the throttlebody from the airbox/intercooler. Looks like a weekend project for me!
OK I dont want offend Russ here, but he is going to say he used a dynafile. This is not the proper tool for the job as it does not remove metal in the proper plane. I saw what was done to another members TB with the dyna file ane it was kind of grizzly. I spent several hours trying to salvage it with a Dremel and the proper bits and was able to do so. If you have an intrest in doing the mod I could be persuaded to do the job. I have had many hours spend porting in my time as a mechanic building race motors. I would not recommend that a novice try and port the TB as it can go wrong very quickly. As for the bypass, I simply removed the TB and used the longer of the two hoses and ran it to the fitting on the coolant galley on the top of the motor. This make much more sence when you have the parts in hand. m
Ok Matt, it wasn't the greatest job, but fot the tools we had, it worked pretty good. If I have some of the dynafile belts I have at a previous job, it would have been polished like a mirror. Oh well, its still better than the stocker. Russ
Ok, but the direction in which the metal was removed was in the wrong plane. I would not suggest you do that to any other TB remember what they say, the proper tools for the proper job. On a side note (OT) do you have any gl-5 gear oil? I need 6 qt. and how much would that go for? And I got somebody to work for me this weekend so I will be at the event and I think Franny is going to come as well. M

Matt, may I persuade you to port my throttlebody? How long will it take, and can you do it with the intake manifold on the car? How about a group-buy?
Ok, the TB has to be off of the car. all you gave to do is pull the I/C, throttle cables, unplug MAP & TPS sensor, coolant lines and the four bolts that hold it to the runner. So yes the intake runner stays on the car. It would take a few hours to do it. AH dude dont you think that is a little personal for you to watch? Yes that would be fine. M

When and where can we meet to get this thing done? I can probably do it myself with my dremel tool, but I don't feel comfortable messing with the throttle cable... and I would like to see how much mad skillz Matt has, yo. o :? I am free this whole weekend. Noah, I will feel intimidated if it's just Matt and I, so you (or anyone else) should come also. J/K about being shy.
Tell me when and I'll see if I can make it... Hey, we should have everyone come and it'll be our meet! Or not...
I was thinking meeting at the karting event and going from there. By the way, what time will you guys start racing? I want to see you guys duke it out.

LOl Vic is coming over after the Kart event to do his bumper. We could do it after that if time permits. And by the way I will not do it for free, LOL I expect to at least get dinner or something. Unfortuniately, some people b4 you have been quite thankless for the amount of time and effort I given them so that will stop for me as I have enough projects to do myself. I am not mad or anything I just want to say it so it is said and i dont want to feel that people are taking advantage of my skills. The event is from 8- 11 I believe
I accept cash! I prefer large bills, but alot of the small ones will also work. The karting is from 8-10 we need to be there at 7:30. We are going to have a full house and then some. Matt I should have room for ya, but no promises, sorry. I am asuming Vic still has 6, and Chong still has 3, so that should leave room for you and possibably Franny. I guess we will see who actually shows up. Joel, if you make it (and for everyone else), Mark is bringing a rotors for people to check out. Matt, I do have some gl-5, but what is it for?? I have the series 2000, and the standard synthetic, but if you are putting it in a tranny, I would use the standard stuff. It isn't as slippery as the series 2000. If it is for the rear diff, use the series 2000. I have a bunch of each sitting here. Series 2000 is about $7.50 a quart, and the std is about $6 a quart. I will try giving ya a call later. Russ
Not yet. I will be delivering the TB to Matt sometime this week to have it ported. Hopefully, the gains, even the slightest, are nothing but positive.

We will either do it this week or I am off next week so I will have much more time.
Guys, to be honest, I have begun to do some porting to the aluminum intake runner under the intercooler myself. I noticed that it is very very restrictive at the inlet: those aluminum runners under the intercooler after the turbo compressor. If the inner diameter of the Samco hoses is 3", the inlet of the part I'm porting looks to be 2.25" only. I started porting it out a bit but it's not perfectly smooth yet. When it's done, I hope my reflashed ECU can handle the better intake flow once everything is done and complete. The gaskets are beginning to loosen out. So, I may need new gaskets before the peices are put back together. Matt, I remember being warned to not do this by myself, but I have a feeling I can do the throttlebody all by myself. The TB, also, looks a lot easier to port than the intake runners under the intercooler. I'm only planning to knife-edge the TB lip. *eek!*
Chong, my car seems to feel less powerful by the day. This project should help out the throttle response and the torque a tiny bit more.
Fong, I think that a figure of speech, or maybe your just looking for a reason to speed more money, U probably got Tax Returns coming. I think if you just get it tunned you will noticed a much snappier response feel My DC2 is like that, it is like night and day, if I'm even off by half a degree it would feel different. Chong
That's VTEC you're talking about. Personally, I have never been in a car with VTEC so I don't know what the hell you're/I'm talking about... Oh by the way, I did the throttle body bypass while I had everything out. I reconnected one of the lines back into the engine as what Matt did. Thanks, Matt! ...I also did the PCV valve (having the TB off made the replacement very easy), I checked my tranny fluid level, and I'm going to bleed my clutch fluid before I put everything back together. Maintenence. Thanks for supporting my wallet, Uncle Sam!
I just finished the porting, and did a battery reset. It took me 2+ hours to put the intercooler back on. } The car wasn't so strong the first few miles after trying the Vishnu reset. A few miles up, I did the Vishnu reset again, drove and revved for the next mile, and WHOA! My butt dyno was happy! I know that the turbo is spooling faster. I will have to test out the car tomorrow to confirm. I have pics of my TB after I ported it. I'll put it up when I get the chance.
What did you do to that? doesn't look like anything at all. I think you need to get a proper job done on that. The lip b4 the butterfly is still there. the outer edge is way to thick needs to be radius'd Sorry
LOL! No, that's not my throttlebody. I saw that on NASIOC and used it as inspiration to port my TB, but I would never ever do that to my throttlebody. Hence, I used the  smily face after that picture. My port job is actually quite professional. It's very smooth. I'll post a pic of mine later. Besides, I really liked how you ported your throttlebody. So, I merely used your ported TB as an example of quality. Thanks, I look up to your skills, Matt.

It looks almost, half-way "professional." Really though, I used a to do the porting and a to do the smoothing. I used the "#275 Single-Speed MultiPro Tool" to do the project. 35,000 rpms, baby!
