i've smoked mine with night shades spray paint. it's a ton of work to do it right. lots of buffing, sanding, rubbing compound, etc. i ended up doing it twice to get the desired look. i would probably go with the film if i had to do it over, easier and not much more expensive.

I use rockblocker on my 02. It's kind of a ghetto install, but they look cool. :) I've had them on for almost a year. No guff from the po-po...yet.

angus, I just read your post in the classifieds. Bummer of a deal, I'd swap ya but i've got a sedan. Makes me think twice about tinting my tails but being that i'm considering the vinyl stickers at least if I get any guff I can pull them off if it comes to that.

    Thanks for the input all

wrexinator03, what type of tint do you have and let me know if you'd want to sell it. I wasn't able to pm you for some reason.

you can buy tint film and adhesive at checker. just take your time and use a hair dryer.

I may just go the hotsubarus way. I've heard their vinyl is very thick and better quality stuff than what ebay or auto stores have. Plus its already cut to fit.

Love the look of your tails by the way, do you have any shots from the rear? Also did you paint out your side markers as well? Been thinking of doing this also when I get a can of matching paint.

My buddie uses clear coat mixed with black. He did an experiment with Beater cars and it didn't turn out to look bad at all.

if you read my thread it explains that they are color matched and tinted using auto paint. my buddy that works at a body shop in st. paul is very talented. if you want i can ask him if he wants to do more. probably 50 bucks or so a set. and yes my sidemarkers are tinted too. check my vbgarage.

another way to do it, is if you use a hair dryer to take the lens off the tail light housing, you can lightly coat the inside of the lens, it will look tinted from the outside if you are careful and do it right. Used to do it to cars all the time back in the day, just rattle canned it.

i believe tintmasters just pulls of your headlights, sprays with a can of night shades, and that's it. they don't add clear coat, and all the time it takes to buff and get a good-smooth shine.

    This guy does amazing work:

But you either have to be without your tails for a while or buy new ones.

If its not too dark, I doubt the cops will care. Too dark and you'll get attention from suburban cops though. You'll get less grief for them than windowtint as long as they're not dark enough to really impair light output/. (Which happens, on a drive last year I was behind an A4 that had tint so dark you couldn't see any brake light but his 3rd one, taht sucked)
