Just ordered my Rota Torques from Oakos.com. Now I need to quickly decide on what size tire I want to run. I'm getting Yoko avs es100's. Do I want 235/40 or 225/45????!!!! From what i've researched rubbing isn't much of an issue. HELP!!! need and answer by Friday!!!

Depends on original tire size (if you care about speedo accuracy). There will be a minimal difference, but if the rolling diameter is not an issue, go with the 235s.

    These are 17x8 Rota's, I assume?
    |EDIT: Uh, yeah, DUH, like the thread title says.

    Excerpt from http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.jsp?make=Yokohama&model=AVS+ES100
    Code:
    Size RimWidth SecWidth TreadWidth Diameter
    205/55WR16 5.5-7.5" 8.3" 7.5" 25.0" *STOCK*
    225/45WR17 <font color="green">7.0-8.5"</font id="green"> 8.9" 8.7" <font color="green">25.1"</font id="green">
    235/40WR17 <font color="red">8.0</font id="red">-9.5" 9.6" 9.1" <font color="red">24.5"</font id="red">
My vote is for the 225/45's.
+ Closer match for the stock diameter (speedo accuracy).
+ NOT right at the very edge of the recommended-rim-width range.
    + Lower probability of rubbing.

Of course, before taking MY opinion into consideration, you may want to factor in that I just ordered raised white letter tires for my Suby.)

personally, i'd go with the 235/40 or 45/17...

i bet if the STI had the same 235/45/17 advan a046 instead of 225/45/17 whatever they came with, it'd possibly handle just as well as the evo, maybe even better! remember, tires DO make a difference in performance...

if you're gonna test two runner's abilities, they should both wear the same shoes!

Well Rob, you make a good arguement. However, now that I think about it the reason I got 17x8 as opposed to 17x7.5 is to run wider. So why wouldn't I want to run 235/40? well, just in case there are rubbing issues would I have just blown ~$500 on tires???

    my dilema continues...

Another factor to consider is the offset of your wheels. I have read and have seen as much as 245's on a wrx and have been contiplating about getting simular size's as well. :D

hey, I plan to run 235/40/17 with the SAME 17x8 wheels on my 1st gen WAGON. I'll be rolling the fenders a little but it won't be lowered too much, just to like 1 finger or 2 fingers in the front and 1 finger to flush in the rear with the fender.

Is this for a sedan? 235/40 will be fine on a sedan but not a wagon. Your speedometer will read 60 when in reality your only going 58 or so. Speeding ticket protection.

On my SVX, stock is 225's on 16x7.5 rims. I plan on getting 245's though. The best part, no rubbing!

Well, I went with 235/40s. Looks very close to rubbing. I have to visit Wisconsin this weekend, so we'll see if I have any problems. Does anyone know if you can remove the rubber thing on the fender? Will that give me more room? Looks ok for now though. Hopefully I can get one of my friends with a digital camera to take some pics for me soon!

you guys need to include the offset of the wheels you are running, that is what really makes a difference.

pat, before you take anything off i would get an alignment, you may not need it but you could run a tad bit more negative camber in the rear to clear.

i had this idea which i think i may do just to check my own set up, setup some platform for one side of the car, like a 4x4 piece of wood, jack the car up and slide it under the wheel, then let the car down, you will fully compress that suspension most likely and see the full travel, which will simulate hard cornering, then you can see if anything is touching or close to it.

just an idea not sure if it would work like i think. also good call on the 235's wider is better;)

if you do remove the rubber which is easy....you better roll them fenders or your gonna cut your tires.....
