TLeg build (new pics 10/30) starts tonight!!!! Got my beater yesterday, a '91 Ford Tempo with 76k on the clock. It'll be a great motivator to get this biotch running, cause its quite a change from driving the Leggy. We're hoping to have the motor and tranny out tonight. We could get furthur if Jeremy gets his stupid papers done so he can come join us gease monkeys I'll post pics tomorrow.
I still can't believe that clutch looks that good at over 100k. We made pretty good progress tonight. I'm shure I'll be pretty damn sore tomorrow, especially after those rear bolts on the control arm. Those probably won't hold a candle to the rear suspension and driveline, which I'm not looking forward to. Yay 13 year old bolts. I'm also surprised I only got one cut on my hands. I usually make swiss cheese of them when I do stuff like this.
Yea I only got one cut on my wrist. So the damage report from tonight was: Multiple 10mm Bolts Broken Multiple 12mm Hood Bolts Broken 1 Craftsman 19mm Socket Broken 1 19mm Rear Control Arm Bolt De-Threaded 1 Massive Gear Oil Spill
hey let me know if you have a surplus of OEM parts for that thing. Those pictures have got me itchin to get my motor out. Good luck!
pics look good, when do you think its gonna be ready to tear it up, and pull some more WRXs off the beach?
Made some progress tonight. Jeremy and Kyle were there. Pete and Kyle got the old motor stripped of all the valuable shtuff. Who knew the cam/crank angle sensors were about $250 apeice. :eek4: I'm gonna saw the old heads into quarters for ****es and giggles, and to see where and how much material I can take from the intake ports. We took the oil pan cause the one that came with the EJ22T was dented. Damn junkyard monkeys. Jereamy and Max took the dash out. Always a fun job in a subaru. We took the tranny cross member apart to put the new bushings in. The old ones feel like something you'd was dishes with. They were replaced with a Super Pro poly set. Those with the STi Group N mount and I think I'm gonna find a new meaning to the term NVH. All the while I was being pwn3d by my rear suspension and diff. The big bolt that holds the lateral links to the knuckle is t3h ghey. I was able to get the pass side off, after working it for a while. The inside bushing pin is stuck to it though, and is soaking in penetrant as we speak. So is the other bolt since I couldn't get it to move, even with a three foot pipe on the end of the breaker bar. God damnmit. Why didn't they hear about anti-seize when they put this thing together. When I get it all apart, I'll bring the inside two lateral links and the trailing arm in to school to press the old junk out and the new bushings in. I already ddi the back two since Igot those from the yard a while ago. Legacy L's didn't have a rear swaybar in '93. Therefore the lat links don't have the braket for the endlink. Lame ooo. We're going at it again tomorrow night. I'm looking to *maybe* get the rest of the rear suspension apart tomorrow night.(crosses fingers). We'll dig out the turbo xmember to get that cleaned up, new bushings intalled on the rack, and get it back together with the front suspension. The 5MT needs to come apart for the stub axels so that is on the agenda. Once they are in the 6MT, she'll be ready to plop up in there. Of course I'll add the wiring to the mountain I already have by not worring about it right now. hehe yeah And to answer Martin's question, I'm shooting for eight weeks on this build. Fabbing the up/down pipes is gonna take time, but not as much as the electrical/vaccum/pcv/whatever systems. Plus lots of other BS like bringing IC pipes to get welded, coolant hose routing, and a host of other little details have the potential to be a pain in the a$$. I'll post pics when I get off work tomorrow. peace
new pics Fun stuff. My ald rack was kinda in rough shape, ya think? Getting the new bushings around the rack was a pain even with it out of the car, I can't imagine doing it with it in the car. Getting the lateral link bolts out of the knuckles was the most fun. I twisted one off, so I get to go buy a $38 bolt. I might have to get new stub axles cause the groove in the end isn't big enough for the circlip that hold it in the 6 speed. ghey Anyone want the old motor or tranny? I take many forms of payment, namely beer
The motor is pretty much ready to drop in. Almost all of the coolant and vacuum cannot be done until the motor is in and the uppipe/downpipe fab is done, and the turbo is sitting in it's home. I just need that rear diff bracket, and the friggen stubs for the 6MT. They didn't ship until today. yeah, I'm pissed. I can't put he motor in untill the tranny is in. GODAMMIT Besides, I found a EJ22T in a JY for cheap to put on ebay for some loot to get a few last odds & ends.
Where are you getting your stainless turbo oil feed line and that adaptor? Im thinking of switching them out when i get my VF34 or whatever turbo i end up getting. Looks real nice, i hope to have the funds this winter to pull my 22T and break her down and rebuild.
I got the M12x1.25 to -4 AN adapter from www.anplumbing.com for about $12. Jay at Northern engine supply hooked me up with two feet of stainless braided teflon line, two hose ends, a 45 degree adapter and a 90 degree adapter for about $36. Since I'm doing a rotated mount, I have to redo all the lines, and I wanted to stay away from banjos. You can save a ton by getting steel AN fittings as opposed to aluminum.
Update from tonight.... 6MT Tranny installed, front suspension re-assembled, wheels back on, and the motor is in. I tried one of my WRX/RS wheels over his 4 pot racing brake calipers (to see if I could buy the same setup and run my factory wheels in the winter) and they fit by the smallest clearance possible. Dan should post a pic when he gets internet access, it was quite hilarious.
hehe, do you think it'd be safe for me to run those wheels if I bought a set of those racing brakes? Also, I'm down for working on the leggy all day Sunday... we should start early.
Here's a few progress pics... Basically he got the radiator mounted back further, intercooler test fitted (had to make it so headlights will fit) then started fabbing the intercooler piping.
Here are a few more. We should have the uppipe and downpipe done tonight with the turbo hung. I need to get a few aluminum welds done on the IC piping, intercooler, and possibly BOV.
More cutting and welding. Uppipe, downpipe and and exhaust are pretty much all fabbed and tacked. I just need to get one hanger for the downpipe before I finish weld everything. The downpipe is a little close to the firewall (like 3/4") so I'll wrap that with the header wrap I have leftover. Next is all the coolant hoses, vacuum lines, remounting a couple things like the cruize control box and what not. Then on to wiring.
Downpipe looks fine to me. Wrapping it will help anyway. Maybe even get some of that thermal barrier blanket material and glue it to the firewall.
That could be an option too. I'd like to save enough wrap for the uppipe, but we'll see. The AC evaporator is on the other side of the firewall from the downpipe, so I could care less about that. Its burning paint and plastic that may or may not get on my nerves. I'll prob just wrap that little section for good measure.
exhaust plumbing is all done. So is the fuel pump. I've been working on other plumbing such as coolant, vacuum, oil, and what not. Wiring to start real soon.
I should have lots of free time this week...since orchestra is over after tonight's pizza party. And I'd be happy to help with the wiring, and I'll bring over my ECU pinouts too....
