The other day when I went to go to work I heard a fairly faint metal on metal grinding noise whenever I pushed the clutch pedal in. It turns out that the throwout bearing is bad. My first question is what cause these to go bad? I do sit in traffic but I don't ride the clutch or rest my foot on it. Also, how long do I have before it needs to get done? we were told it has a "cheap aftermarket clutch" in it currently. thanks!
Poor/worn (factory) fitment between input shaft and tob. There's a sleeve kit/different size tob that addresses the issue: http://www.flatironstuning.com/p-2603-tsk3-transmission-sleeve-kit.aspx
My tob went out at about 115k on the stock clutch. I think exedy makes replacements for em, at least for my wrx they had one.
I don't have the knowledge to do the work myself yet... Any suggestions where I can go? The dealership quoted $1400 for clutch replacement. That seems high. After I posted, it failed and it had to be towed home.
I had NF do my tob for a considerable amount less. If you can get a hold of them, that would be a good route to go.
