So, i decided to bring in the subbie to get an alignment and get her breaks bleed so she would be all good to go. Every time i go to stop she turns off.... Theres a little less then a quarter of a tank, unless the gage cluster is lieing to me... so i don't think she out of gas, and she has no other signs of being out.

Then the check engine light comes on. I just figure this is from the makeshift wiring job she got, i was just going to ask Max when i got home about it.
I'm at a pretty busy intersection in the turn lane at the red light, she turn off again...and wont turn back on. It wont turn over and then everything stops, my hazards wont even work.

I'm stuck there, on the phone with AAA and people are yelling, honking, giving me the bird! then the guy behind is just honking and i go tell him my cars dead, i'm sorry and hes just like " you need to move you car!!!!!" im like " sir, its dead"
then hes like "you need to move it now!" so i just walked away....
This happens again with the next old man behind me, but i think he just couldn't hear....
finally this nice man comes and pushes me threw the intersection to the curb and i sit there waiting for the tow truck and people continue to just flick the bird and honk!

I almost got ran over by this impatient dude that wanted to turn with the green arrow..

    WHY ARE PEOPLE SO RUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now my cars dead again.... any ideas why she turns off?:ugh:

^^ that's what I thought, since your hazard wasn't function. Most likely could be a battery failure.

If it makes you feel better, I've gotten the finger when I've had to help shut down roads for fatal accidents while I've been with the FD. People are pricks when they're suddenly inconvenienced for a few minutes, there's no sense of "Oh well, it could be worse" anymore.

where is it stuck? I'm on my way out to run a few errands, I could take a look. I've also got an OBD II scanner, so we can see what the CEL is from. call me.

Well the negative battery cable was garbage, so I put even more of my parts on her car. I also Checked the alternator, and it is only putting out 13.3V and idle and does not change at all when I rev it...so I assume it's the alternator.

This car hates not being broken, everytime I do anything to it it's 2 steps forward and 3 back.

13.3v sounds about right, mine sit at about 13.5. that's what my car puts out. it shouldn't change as you rev, that's what the regulator is for. if it wasn't charging at all, it'd be the same voltage with the engine running or not. if the regulator was shot, it'd sit at about 17v.

could've just been the bad ground.

You can also tell if your alternator is dead if you monitor battery voltage in some way. If the battery voltage just starts slowwwwly dropping .1v at a time and never comes back up, the alt is toast. I can't tell you how many alternators I've burnt up. Glad you found the problem with the car and at least it's an easy fix. Sorry to hear about the other people being inconsiderate and rude, that's always a bummer when people are being ****s to you about something you have no control over.

When running, and the battery charged, the voltage should be around 13.8v. 13.3 is close enough, cloud be just a little low or the voltmeter isn't super accurate.

When the batter has been run down a little (like right after starting) you should see about 14.2v until it is charged up.

When you turn the car off, what voltage does the battery read (after it's run for a while)? It should be close to 12v, if it's less than 11v, the battery is probably dying.

It sounds like the negative cable was the primary culprit, but it could be a combination of things too, so the rest are things to watch out for.

Yes, loose battery cables will definitely kill the battery.

doubt it. pretty hard for an alt to cause catastrophic electrical failure like that. running one minute and 100% dead the next.

the regulator on my dad's '94 went out, and it would cause a dead short when off, so would eventually go dead, but once it was running, it would stay running as long as you like (or until 17v set something on fire!).

you could have just said "I work at a subaru dealer and I'm still threatened by a guy who doesn't even have a garage". it would have been much simpler :)

or you could have read the rest of the thread and realized that the diagnosis had changed since that post. but you were too busy congratulating yourself

Nissan used to own part of Subaru, which was then sold to GM (bringing about the Saabaru (for some reason I typed that as Assbaru the first time. Must be freudian) and the Tribecca), then GM sold and Toyota bought. When Nissan owned their share, they did a lot of parts sharing, and leveraging suppliers with the buying power of both, which is why you see so many Nissan parts in Subarus still.
