Who has experience with high stall (or whatever you would call them) torque converters in their wrx autos? I'm interested to hear the best launch techniques, best techniques from a roll, and how they effect everyday driving...like quick 45-65mph acceleration (passing) This has been on my list of mods for my GF's 4eat WRX, but I have really no knowledge and wondering if this will be a worthwhile mod for a stage 2 (cobb or equivalent) car. thanks

We need to hook up and I can give ya a ride. You can install the converter and you will not know it is there. Once you hit the gas it will do everything you want. The greatest mod you could do to a 4eat wrx. The only other thing you will want to do is get a tranny cooler. Russ
^^^Completely agree. I was so happy once I installed my TC. It makes a huge difference and really allows you to feel what the 4eat can do. I highyl recommend it and hit up Bikerboy...he may still have a spare 4eat tc sitting around that is already modified. Will save you a ton of down time
Yeah the TC mod is really worth it if you use it. I am using a 5EAT so my feedback wouldn't be relivent. I have the core converter sitting at the shop it would need to be sent out for the mod. It usually takes 2-3 weeks to get it back. Matt
PW??? I was actually sold on the idea of a IPT or level 10 tc until we played around the other day. Out of the 4-5 pulls from dig (kinda..I know you only had a couple seconds to prepare), from a roll, etc...you had your butt handed to you 100% of the time. :biggrin: Our cars have the same mods, I was expecting more of a fight....or maybe it was the driver seriously though..I was about to tell sarah to skip it.
I have one, and I love the fact that I can launch in boost. I don't do it too often, but it greatly increases your launches. Plus if you sit in 2nd gear at around 35-40mph @ around 4k and just mash the gas, the car just takes off. It's kinda nice when you have to pass the idiot who knows you wanna get over but won't let you. All depends on where you're at full boost, but I love mine. The valvebody modification is recommended for reliability if you're gonna be pushing more power as well. That is what I like about my setup. It shifts hard and fast No stock shift lag...the stock shifting in the 4eat compared to a modded VB is night and day.
^^That's the type of performance I thought should come from the tc, which leads me back to another question..driving techiques... What are some good suggestions..in addition to ones mentioned above?
I don't want to sound like a wanna' be manual guy but I use my gear selector quite a bit during spirited driving. Learning where and when you can safely downshift and upshift. Its nice to use 1st gear to launch. Although, with my 20g, that gear doesn't last long so its a quick shift, but 4k-6+ is like a shot out of a cannon. Especially when you torque brake. If ya didn't know...put the car in neutral, and pump the brakes a couple times and hold em down. This will give your brakes some more grip when you start to build boost. After pumping the brakes a couple times and holding, put it in 1st, 3rd or drive, or whatever gear you wanna' launch with. Keep the brake pedal depressed and give it some gas and watch the revs. I believe you wanna keep the process of building revs @ max, 5 seconds. Someone else may be able to confirm that. I can get mine up to about 3800 before the car really wants to go. Luckily, that's when my boost starts to hit. Let off and watch that first shift if you're in 1st. Its extremely quick. At least for me. Hitting redline bad...but I believe that the 4eat will shift up a gear anyway if you get over redline, but it's still bad! And like I said before, if you an keep 2nd around a turn @ about 4k and tromp on it, the car will really get out of that corner fast. Otherwise, using 3rd until you get around or over 55mph is what I usually do, just to preserve some passing power. For me, once I put it in drive up over 60mph, it shifts twice and the revs drop to about 2-3k. If I wanna pass someone, I usually put it back in 3rd and git 'er done. Drive will be boggy, unless you mash it, and it just downshifts to 3rd anyway....speaking of anyway. This reply has become too long hope this is somewhat usefull info. I say do it! I love it! No more will the minivan beat me off the line!
my technique for launching= 1. Place left foot on brake firmly 2. Shift car to neutral 3. Rev engine to about 5k (you will feel brake pedal depress another 1/2" to 1") 4. Stop revving engine and shift into 2nd Gear by choosing 2nd gear it allows you to build more boost w/o overpowering your brakes 5. Stomp the gas pedal to the floor 6. When last yellow light illuminates (or if you aren't trying to cut a light, when RPM's are where you want them to be) drop the car into 1st gear while simultaneously removing foot from brake pedal 7. Get ready to do some steering to stay straight 8. Also be ready for the shift to 2nd gear as it comes FAST, I reflashed my ecu so that my rev limiter is now 7600. 9. Watch your trap speed drop considerably compared to stock TC (I was trapping 118 mph and running high 13's before the TC mod, afterwards I trapped 112 @ high 12's....I had a few issues with not shifting due to using my utec...stupid utec)
Tjamz, you just need to do the tc lockup mod. That should give ya a good 4-5mph more at the end of the 1/4 mile. Russ
