Hmm. How 'bout those sweet tie down straps that wrap around axles? It's like a 2' nylon (I think) strap with a metal loop on each end to then put the ratchet strap in. Don't do a whole lot of car hauling myself, but the boss has some and damn they're nice.

 

Hmm I'm trying to picture it, wouldn't a normal ratchet work just wrap it around the axle? With a hook on each end?

 

People will use a nylon piece around the axle vs a hook.
