If I went and bought a trailer hitch for my WRX, could I cut off the 1 1/4 inch section and weld on a 2 inch section in it's place? I really want to put on one of those behind the car motorcycle trays because I just have no room or need for a trailer.

Yes this is a serious question please no flaming.

Could you? Yes. Should you, only if you are VERY confident in your welding.

Don't do it. The car is only rated for tongue weights up to 200lbs.

Yes, I forgot to add that you still shouldn't exceed the tongue weight.

You would probably be better off necking the rack thingy or whatever down to size.

Yes I know about the tongue weight but I was under the impression that the tongue weight was only 200# because of the smaller size of the hitch.

I don't think the rest of the hitch can handle the weight of a motorcycle. And even if you built an entire heavy-duty hitch for your car, I don't think your car itself can handle the weight very well.

I have a tray-style bicycle rack that fits into 1 1/4, but even that is pushing the limit since the impreza hitch is class 1 and the rack I have says it should have class 2, and bicycles are a lot lighter than a motorcycle.

Yeah I figured that I would have 300-350# of tongue weight

Initially then the KTM I am saving for, sadly it's either I find a way to haul my bike with out a trailer or I buy something like a Tacoma. Which I don't really wanna do cause I'll loose so much selling the car.

Imprezas are only rated for class 1 hitches, the 2000 lb total / 200 lb tonque weight limit is a limit on the car and the hitch, putting a strong hitch on there doesn't increase the load capacity. Class 2 hitches are still only 1 1/4, but can handle more weight. The forester can take Class 2 hitches for example and carry 3500/350.

I'm sure you _can_ build a stronger hitch and make it work, it just won't handle well at all with 350 lbs on it and could be a safety issue in some situations.

I'd say get a small trailer, your car can easily pull that amount of weight when it's on a trailer.

Do you seriously not have room for a trailer? Our 4'x6' trailer fits just fine in the 10x10 storage shed we rent.

If not, you could look into something like one of those single rail folding trailers, but they are pretty spendy.

Yes, the thought has crossed my mind. ;)

Even with the tailgate down, the bed still isn't even 6' long.

Cool link. Post #41 looks like the exact same trailer I have.

And that is a very interesting setup on that Baja, hahahaha.

Here's the trailer I built for my Camry Rally Wagon... However the Camry is dying, so I'm going to have to throw a hitch on the 2.5rs. Any recommendations?

There's a few out there even smaller then that. Price is high but I guess people buying the uber small trailers need them for a reason...

True, but those "trailer in a bag" motorcycle trailers look like complete pieces of poo. There's no way I'd want to put my bike on one of those, especially on the freeway.

I'd imagine that wheels matter more then most when talking about freeway stuff. As long as you aren't rolling on 6" wheels then you should be fine. I know of a few people that use the style that you can break down. They've had nothing but good things to say about them. I saw one at the bike show that even had a locking front wheel chock making loading an easy one man operation.

Well you could roll on 6" wheels, but don't be suprised when they start on fire from you cruising along at 80mph. :p

Yeah I looked at the trailers in a bag and well, I just don't think its the greatest idea.
