Yo guys this post is from PETE,

I think he just F*uped his tranny. I recieved a phone call from him in need of help. Im the wrong guy to turn to. Heres the summary, he can't get into 1,3,4(sometimes) so he is basically driving on 2nd and 5th. Any suggestions as to get a whole new tranny, or get new gear sets etc... I know many of you guys here did the research so post up some comments, ANYTHING will help,

    Mr Yang

I guess a new tranny is in order. If the tranny is broken due to abuse, more than the gears are damaged. Upgraded gearsets will not solve the problem completely. An transmission overhaul or a transplant is needed. Tell Pete, I feel for him. I havn't seen his car yet either.

Just tell him to save up for a STi Type RA gearset for his type of 'racing'.

Thanks for posting guys. I just got back from Grand Forks with the car - I was worried it wasn't going to make it. Sometimes I can get the gears to work - 2nd, 4th, and Reverse are fine. 1st works if shifted into 2nd first then back down, same with 3rd from 4th. 5th gear works sometimes. I'm going to call my potential hookup for doing the actual work to find out the costs for the labor of rebuild vs. replacement. I'm also going to call subaru to find out what a brand new tranny costs and weigh the parts options from there. Anyone know of any good shops in town just to get a second opinion after I call this guy tomorrow? I can afford the RA gearsets right now but I'm concerned the labor is going to be too pricey for a rebuild and like Fong said a gearset may not fix all my problems. Would it also be worth my time to search for a totaled RS or WRX? Also to Yia, any word on whether the tranny out of red and white is going to be for sale and how much were you looking to get for it? Thanks for putting this post up for me, bud. Any help is greatly appreciated as I'm going to try to get this resolved ASAP so I can get my car rollin again.

Forgot to mention in the previous post the car has almost 140k on it and when subaru put the new clutch, tranny mount, and short throw in - they noticed there were metal shavings(they said the shavings were not brass so it was something other than the synchros) when they changed the tranny fluid so I think the new clutch killed the tranny the rest of the way.

labor would be no prob! fuji does those things in his brother's garage for free.....replacing a tranny wouldn't be too much of a prob. buy the gears, we replace!

Lue and Fuji - does this sound like something we could do? Could you guys take a look at my car just to make sure that it is in fact the tranny that is busted?

LOL the tranny is mechanically the most complicated thing in the car. Are you really ready to have an inexperienced person do that?

I have two other options as of today...I called subaru and they can pop a rebuilt one in there for 3200 tranny and labor. I also had forgotten about the IONperformance cryo-trannies. Those are running 2700 bucks. If I were to order a brand new tranny from them would that be more realistic than trying to rebuild with STI gears? As always any feedback is appreciated.

unbolting and rebolting a tranny wouldn't be much prob. But yeah, i would feel kinda ehh too letting us doing do it! even i feel ehh doing it myself! LoL...but it's all part of learning. I've done plenty of tranny swaps. As long as the tools are there, It can be done. But like matt said! we have some sort of experience but probably not even close to others so unless you or matt help us out, we won't touch it incase we break something! and depending on what fuji says.....

I talked to Jack at IonPerformance today and he's going to send me a new quote for a cryo-tranny. Apparently when I talked to him last the value of an American dollar was a lot more so now it's looking like closer to 3 for the tranny. However, he did think that he had once in stock. I'm awaiting the quote from him. I'll get back to you guys once I have a price.

BTW, my ride isn't beating anything in a race currently...in fact it doesn't get anywhere in a real hurry having to fight the car to shift into first on those hill starts :)

Since when did "I" volunteered to swap a tranny? I'm always willing to help out but a tranny swap does take time. Matt knows his stuff and I'm sure we all can learn from him.

A tranny does have a lot of parts and so you just have to organize them and don't mis-place them when you're taking the tranny apart. I havn't taken a tranny apart but I COULD do that at a junkyard just for the heck of $2 entry fee. There are also shims that might be in there so adjusting those to the right degree would save your tranny aswell.

Ok so I scored a tranny last night after I left that post. Fong, you are the man! 575 plus shipping. Should ship out friday from subaru of dallas and be here in a week. I appreciate everyone's help and I'll start making calls Friday to have the work done unless someone from here can show me what's up..btw how much would you need Matt just to bolt in another stock tranny?

Sup everbody? Haven't been on for a while so sorry to leave you hangin, Matt. I just got my tracking number for the tranny today and its scheduled to get here on the 14th. It took the dealership some time to get this processed but it finally got done. Through a friend of a friend at work I'm geting the install lined up with a local tranny shop once the tranny gets here...for the install $250 and a case of beer(and apparently some crap I will take for driving a subaru) :D I'm gonna come out of this with a semi-new tranny installed for under a grand. Thanks for all your help guys!
Sad to say though, I'm thinking about parting with the RS in the near future even tho I love this car. I'm thinking pretty soon it might be STI time

It is a silver 4door 2001 2.5rs. The front bumper is cracked and the paint on it messed up from the deer collision still and has two cracked foglights(besides the foglights and missing orange piece on one side you do not notice any damage until you get really close to the car). Once the tranny is fixed the bumper will be the only notable problem with the car. The car has 140k on it and was smoked in. The only mods not listed in my signature are kenwood exceleon deck, 4 infiniti kappa 6.5", 2 Alpine v12 amps(one for subs, one for infinitis), two pioneer 10" subs with custom box all wired with monster cable, and body color painted sidebars. I can rip off any performance pieces with the exceptions being the driveline upgrades and catback exhaust(stock muffler has loose baffles and is annoying as hell to have on the car and the stock muffler section will not match the brullen midpipe). On top of that I will also have a set of stock pulleys that are fine and a stock midpipe(also have muffler but I don't know why anyone would want it) as well as a perfectly good exhaust manifold and cat section...I have the stock airbox/intake setup also with a KandN filter(hardly used because I had the Cobb cai installed shortly after purchasing). I would prefer to sell it as a package to the right person so I don't have to screw with pulling everything off. I have yet to see what the dealership would do in terms of price but I'm guessing they won't do much except adjust the loan to eat the difference. If anyone is interested drop me an e-mail.

So guess what everyone? Subaru didn't put my car back together right after they put my clutch in }:) Turns out its not the tranny at all but rather they didn't tighten my linkage even close to all the way and they installed the short throw wrong and between those events it as enough to block me out of gears. The car drives like a dream again!!!! Turns out the WI guy may end up with this tranny after all unless someone else from here needs it - it is a 99RS tranny. So I guess this a good thing being I can sell the tranny and I met some really good mechanics but a bad thing being it was a royal pain in the a$$ to get everything lined up. Anyone need a tranny? lol

You could hold onto the tranny just in case or you can sell it online right away and get your money back. I don't need a tranny, and hopefully I don't jinx myself now that I've said that. [xx(]

I'm probably going to sell the thing. I've got no room for this tranny in my townhouse and it would be extra cash towards the new car when I'm ready to get it. Or I may end up throwing the second tranny in with my car when I end up selling it.

Hey Fuji....As of today my car is officially for sale. If you need the tranny let me know otherwise I plan on selling it with the car. If anyone wants to get ahold of me on the car or the tranny, drop me an e-mail through the board. If I end up parting the car out I'll let you guys know what I'll have available and for how much. Thanks!
