When shifting into 2nd......pop bang, then the sound you get when you miss a gear.....grind..... Then un commanded braking feel.....

Now the engine won't run without the clutch pushed in....

Ouch, sorry to hear that Chris. There's a few people on here capable of ripping it apart to find out the damage. Or are you looking for a complete replacement?

I am flexible about how I get it fixed. It's at the Leightons Garage in Eden Prairie and they are looking in to my ability to have it covered under the extended warranty.

Sorry to hear that Chris! Mike Wray did a great job on mine, but i'm sure that Carl and crew could get the job done for you too! You should look into rebuilding with the 04/05 gearset if you do rebuild and have the $$.

I'm game....but warranty company needs to be in the loop to try to defray the costs. They are apparently limiting the labor costs to 80 an hour they will pay... and needs to be a sanctioned tranny shop. I hope we can make these things work out and utilize Mike or Carl. I would be glad to pay for the added cost to upgrade the parts to 04/05 gear set.

Well scratch the warranty idea. Everyone I talk to says forget it. Soooooo I have to bite the bullet and I'm ready to pull the trigger and get it done right...upgraded gears and all! If you're gonna do it, do it right!

It's not something you'd really notice while it is in there. The gears were slightly wider IIRC, but it isn't something you'd see. Basicly, if it isn't broke, i wouldn't go out of my way to "fix" it till you do break it.

Just wait for the stock tranny to give up the ghost, then purchase an 04/05 gear set and have your 02 tranny rebuilt with the new gears. ;)

What Jason said! Probably no difference in feel or anything, but the 04/05 gears are moar durable. Equivalent to the RA gears, or they actually are RA gears...i don't remember for sure.

Clutch, flywheel, and the actual trans case even is completely the same as the 02 (some need stubs--easy to get and cheap from the dealership) just the gearset is different.

Yes, the 04/05 gears fit in the 02/03 case. Been done many times, and will be done many more.

If you wanna overbuild, I absolutely LOVE the whine of PPG straight-cuts. ;)

Okay everyone, Graham is recommending I replace the gearbox. He says by the time we replace the gears, it is likely the shafts are bent, and for the dollar cost it is not worth it to rebuild this one....
Soooooooo, any 04/05 boxes out there?

Probably a nice tranny, too. But it's alittle over budget...okay alot overbudget at 4500. This is my money I have to part with...not the company I work for.

Shibbs: What will I need extra for the install? Also, will the different gear set throw my speedo off. If so, can I throw in a fix for that?

Installed the 04 tranny on my 03 bug eye! Seems like it bolted up just right. No complaints from Graham. He installed a 6 puck stage 4 clutch, too. seems a little chattery, but have not had time to wear it in, either. Also, it's working with a 9 lb flywheel made of aluminum....hope they're compatable! I have some new, stiffer engine and tranny mounts that need installation, too. What a great, and knowledgeable guy! I would definitely recommend Graham to anybody who needs work and doesn't want to take it on themself! I will likely never go to any other Subaru mechanic! No need! I'm sure there are many others out there, but I found a great one! Thanks Karl, and Dave(scuba steve)!

Take it easy on the transmission. I've seen what a stronger clutch can do to those 5 speeds. It'll be chattery.
Because of the lightweight flywheel, you MAY get some misfire CEL.

You are welcome....seen your car last time we were up there. Still looking very sharp!

6 puck? lol. Yeah as Nuke said...take it easy on the shifts. However, one you're used to it you'll like it.

We need to hit you up for another tint strip on the rally car soon...

It was 5%.... I always tell people to use 5% for a visor if you're going to do it at all; because when the sun is right there, it won't be enough....you'll want more....just don't do it too low.

I was just joking around. I didn't mean anything bad.....it's just hard to take it easy on a turbo charged car.... I mean, I don't exactly try to get the maximum gas mileage out of the car...

Transmission works great. I am getting a p1591 CEL though. I believe the neautral position switch has been used as the 04 original, then we got the light, and now we have switched back to the 03 switch. Suggestions? Any way to over ride the code and make it not reaapear> What is it used for in a 5 speed? I mean who cares if it's in nuetral? It will start in any gear if you push in the clutch...?

I believe the difference between 02/03 and 04+ gearsets is 04+ gearsets went to a double synchro on 2nd and 3rd gear to do a better job speed matching the gears for fast shifts. But what really made the difference is the 04+ slave cylinder has a clutch delay valve. That little spring makes it so if you dump the clutch shifting gears it's a lot less harsh for the gears and they are less likely to get damaged. The 04+ can still be damaged in the same way, it's just a lot harder to cause the same damage as the 02-03.
