Guys, I have a girl friend from California who went to Indonesia for vacation for Christmas. As far as I know, she's been there since Dec. 24, but I don't know what part of Indonesia she's staying at. Please join together with me to wish her well back to the States. :( I hope she is alive and healthy! :( Here's her page: www.xanga.com/tofu_luv

And lets not forget Mr. REDLINETUNING. He went to Thailand to visit family. I hope he wasn't anywhere near the western shores of Thailand. Come home safely, Joe! :(

Reports on the news tonight were saying the wave was moving at 500 mph. That can't be true can it? I also heard someone at a resort on high ground died of a heart attack just from seeing the tsunami coming across the ocean. After hearing these reports I really wish I could see such a powerful force of nature first hand. I have no doubt I'd be as terrified as everyone else but it certainly would be something amazing to behold.

Latest death tolls are passing 20,000 people. That is just awful :(

Majority in Thailand are fine as long as they're not in the lower South West area and peninsula. My parent just got back from Thailand yesterday after spending a month there visiting family and friends.

Fong, we'll keep your GF, fellow board members and others in our thoughts and prayer.

Yes, waves can move at 500 mph, There are 2 typical types of Tsunami. Short and fast.... Tall and slow. The last big one photographed ok was in Japan. 75-80ft tall, but was only moving ~300 mph. If I remember right is was slightly more than 10 years ago from a 6.3 or so quake, but the quake was next to the harbor.

Here is a blanket letter from a freind of mine that is there. He wrote this shortly after it happened to let us know that he and his family was ok.

    Good morning all

you might have already heard that sri lanka was hit by a tsunami
we are ok. The coast of Colombo was also affected badly due to rising waters, but we did not get the large wave in the west coast.

this is the worst disaster in our history!!!!!.
since we have never really had anything even remotely similar to this scale happen in sri lanka, we are ill prepared to deal with it, which makes things that much worse.
we have no idea how many have actually died, the number is at 3500, but rising fast. our coastal belt is highly populated and had no warning on the wave, which was 25-30 ft high in the east coast.

I will be joining a group of people organizing a relief effort from tomorrow to do what we can to help the people affected. I do not think we will realize the total effect of this disaster for a while as the country is still stunned, including myself, and has no previous gage to go by. Initial aerial pictures show that the whole landscape of the eastern and the southern coast has changed.

I hope nothing else happens out at sea as the quake measured 8.9 with an estimated vertical drop of 30 ft along a line stretching out 1400 km (~900 miles) which makes for 'one big burp under water' as mentioned on BBC.

I just wanted to let you all know that we are ok for now.

    Suresh
