I finally got my car tuned up a bit at DB Performance yesterday. There is still a little bit of work that needs to be done to get the tune right, but the car is well on its way. You can see my list of mods in the member's cars gallery.

So what do you guys think of the dyno plots? Anything look weird to you? The overall horsepower reads a little low at DB I heard, not that a number is what it is all about. Correct me if I am wrong, but I think I remember shane saying that a stock STI on their dyno was around 210 whp and Fong's modded Forester put out about 240..something at the dyno day last week.

Looks good to me. I thought a stock sti should put out 225 whp on the db dyno, I might be wrong.

Like i sad, correct me if I am wrong. I have actually never had the chance to ride in an STI so I really don't know how to base the new feel.

Man, you should've picked up a GM bcs for your install/tune. I would imagine that if boost was held at 17-18 @ redline, you'd be much closer to 300whp.

I honestly thought 260-280 whp was the range for a 16g on that type of dyno....I would be glad to be wrong:biggrin:

The first picture has it in there.

I was thinking that I would run higher boost also, but Shane thought that 18-18.5 was about right for a dependable setup. My newbie thought was around 19-20psi.

Like I sad earlier, I need to talk to Shane about going back in. In the time I have driven it since last night, the turbo pressure has pulsed pretty bad quite a few times on the top end of my boost. Basically, it will snap up to about .13MPa and then dip back down to about .11MPa about twice before it settles back up at .13MPa at WOT. Anybody else experience this ever?

Yup...but mine was worst...It looked like a heart beat...Spike up to 18-19psi and dropped about 4-5psi instantly, plus I was running way too rich...Got mine tuned to get rid of it, so Shane should be able to get that out there. My vf34 reliable @ 21psi after the tune...I would assume 20psi proper tune would be good for a 16g setup

19-20 is what I'd want to run on that turbo and then taper it down to 17-18 by redline.

Where are you seeing the boost spike? Right at the onset of boost or more like at 5500rpms or what? Also, in what gear is this happening?

An evoIII 16g is almost the size of an 18g in terms of CFMs.

You run 21 psi on pump gas with your vf34?! That seems real high from what I have read. What am I missing?

    Wall of tvs....
The turbo spools like it should right up to 18-19, but right when it gets there, it bounces back down. Happens with different severity in each gear. I've only driven like 70 miles with the tune now, so I don't know all the peculiarities yet.

I don't want to make it sound like I am bad-mouthing what Shane at DB did. He's a good guy and seems to know what is going on. Also, he told me if the turbo did do the surging thing to give him a call, so I think he had his suspicions that it would happen.

Sounds like a combo of incorrect wgdc targets and too much turbo dynamics correction.

From my limited time on the dyno I've noticed that they put much more load on the car than you'll see on the street. Hence, it can be tricky to dial in a boost curve that will work 100% correctly on the street.

You're about right. My FXT made about 248 WHP and 249 WTQ on the dyno last week on my OTS Cobb AP Stage 2 map. I've since unflashed my ECU from the AP and should now be pumping out 271 WHP as I did last year.

And congrats on your tune. Going to test what it can do at the Rock this Sunday?

Number look good to me. sure you might not be squeezing every tiny bt out of the 16g, but compared to my number at DB (113WHP, 143WTQ) your doing just fine :)

When I was talking to Shane yesterday he said that we were right on the edge of knocking. If that's true, waht are some ways that I can run higher boost without higher octaine gas?

Turn the boost up and the timing down. It's that simple.

You can be on the verge of knock at 7psi or 27psi. What matters is that the ignition is suited to the given load at a given rpm.

Well, with my limited tuning ability, everything should be shifted to the left 4-500 rpm. What kinda of timing are you running at 4-4500 and up top(6k+)?? If I would have tuned it, 20 in the mid and 18 or so up top, but again as I have been previously told, that I don't know what I am doing.

I was mapped at 92 oct. and my A/R is perfect after the tune and was boost'in @ 21psi...I asked about it and Doug (topspeed) it was fine usually he mentioned VF34 can be effient around 18.5-20psi depending on what other mods are on the vehicle. But 21psi for mine is pretty much maxed out and it still show that it is effient throughout the band...Plus usually your tq level is less than HP...we had matched up well with the HP to TQ ratio it was like 252whp to 250wtq in the DD dyno. I know peeps get around 230-240 tops from what I've seen on a VF34 I think it was due to my Gt-Spec Header/up-pipe combo very nice piece and upgrade.

I hate to go back in and sit on the dyno for another 2 hours. That stuff is expensive. 150/hr

Don't these places take it for a road drive after performing the tune? As stated, the dyno is hardly real world driving. You would think so, but what do I know?

I talked to Shane today and I am going back on Tuesday to get some more work done. As some of you suggested, he said we might just have to go out and do some road tuning with it. He also said that my car, for some reason, was exceptionally hard to get the boost right. I guess I just have a stuborn car that doesn't like it's brain messed with.

Any of you have any words of wisdom that I can pass on to Shane on Tuesday?

I don't break the tranny's, the owner of the car breaks the trannys. I just get them the power needed to break the tranny. What they do with it after that is their own problem.
