Some may have seen this over on nabisco but I thought why not bring it to mn subarus attention ....

I may very well use one of these with a Borg Warner s362? ( I think it's s362 whatever is as good or better than a 35r ts....) What do you guys think?

im guessing this limits the flow path of the exhaust for quicker spool up at lower RPMs... but thats just a guess

What would the purpose be of using one of these? What controls the flapper from being open vs. being closed. If you are that concerned with spool, why look at such a large turbo.

If you are wanting to use a S362 you must want some very large power numbers.

It might work off of vaccume, but probably works off of boost.

Edit: the way the actuator sits it works off of boost.

Did some google searching. It brought me to a thread on nasioc that contained this post:

The guy is comparing adding this flapper valve to a turbo on a twin scroll to a variable vain geometry turbo ,like what is on the Ford Powerstroke trucks. I guess I don't see how its the same. I am trying to find pics of the inside of one of these turbos, but have not had any luck. I guess I will have to hope there is one at the shop I can take apart this week and take pics to show how it works. Its a really cool idea, the vanes that are in the exhaust housing end up having lots of problems with sticking, which leads to alot of people spending lots of money on turbos. I have been wanting to try one of them on my 240 for a long time!!

Video of the VGT exhaust housing:

Ya, it looks like its controlled by a "wastegate" if you want to call it that.

So your 1.10 hotside will become a .55 until you spool up and that flapper opens then you get back to the 1.10 for big topend... Sorry I couldn't post more info I was on lunch.

Like NSFW says, you are basically giving yourself two different A/R's with that flapper so I like the term bi-geometry. According to that dyno plot, it apears to help a bit, like 300-400 rpm.

Not quite the same as a true variable geometry turbo like the VNT Garretts and VGT Holsets which have a much greater affect on spoolup.

This will only work with Twin Scroll turbo's though... What do you guys think?

Run the big 1.10 A/R and get it to act like a .63 A/R...:)

So which Borg Warner is as big or bigger as a ts 35r and spools like the ts 35r ? I have trouble reading the compresor maps ect and not many subies run bw it seems, s300 362 or the 366 ?There is also a ton of A/R's to choose from too....

So this will basically make a twin-scroll turbo on a single scroll manifold act like a sequential turbo?

    This could be interesting.

I am basically looking to get Ts bw 35r equvilent to spool just a hair slower than my single scroll 3076 .82 is spooling now... That's the goal , if the goal isn't met: n2o to spool the thing or I am going to have to talk fobia into Fabbing me a ts manifold for some$$$$ :)

this thing wont work for us really. we mostly use t3 flanged turbos. if someone did use t4 flanges it would already be a twinscroll manifold and you cant use it and you allready have the gains if done right. you could always cut and weld a flange on but with all the fab work of re doing everything to accommodate the bigger turbo you might as well go twinscroll any way. this would work more for the 6-8 cylinder guys that already have the t4 flanged headers.

a S300SX 83/75 is a 35r size turbo. the S300SX 88/75 id a little bit bigger around the 37r size. a S300SX 91-79 is a 40r sized and what we use in our kits. vary common to have full boost before 4 grand. those are the signature airwerks turbos that we use. the s3## stuff is the bullseye labeling. bee's car will be tuned shortly and show how drivable a big turbo really is.

the one on riches car and bees car both fit around that pan. as well as dipps, aj's and evans at this point. evans and aj's most likely will change to the sti style header for fog light testing

When are you getting bee's car tuned? I wanna see what it puts down , is it going to be low boost ( 18-20psi or so)? These sound pretty swweeett to don't they... Dipps car sounded like a fighter jet in the video...

I made full boost @ 4,100 on my kit with some issues. when I get my chimera ported heads I should spool sooner. I'm running the Borg S366 .90 AR
