What brand and type of oil do you guys run? On both of our Subies I am running Mobil 1 Synthetic (10W-30). Both have a slight knock until warm, not sure if this is normal with newer Subaru's (but it only seems to happen when it is cold - 10 to 15 degrees). I am thinking of moving to Amsoil, thats what I used to run in my GTI.

I have notice knocking on my honda's as well as on my cousins when running Mobile 1, I have even used 2-50w, it does go away after the engine warms up. I personally dont like the product, I think its too thin for my liking, but my friends swear by it. I have moved on to Redline and Amsoil.
Castrol GTX: It says drive hard... must be made for me  Oh and its cheap !_! Purelator pureONE: Purelator is Subaru's OEM filter brand; pureONE is their 'top of the line' filter.

Valvoline SynPower 5-30 in the winter Valvoline SynPower 10-30 in the summer Purolator filters in the RS OEM liters in the STi
Well, Amsoil, redline and royal purple or the only true 100% synthetic oils on the market. Amsoil oil filters are THE BEST on the market (unless someone know of something else that filters less than 5 microns). I also sell it for cost plus sales tax. Russ

Tommy, I have to agree with Zola. It helps other members better relate to your posts if you understand 100% of what people are saying before you reply to them. And fix you d*mn Engrish, BIATCH!

http://neptune.spacebears.com/cars/stories/oil-life.html The M1 hit it's soluables limit at 12,000 - the amsoil at 14,000. Since I change my oil much earlier than that, I'll stick with the cheaper Mobil 1. They also noted that while the viscosity of the M1 stayed relatively the same, the Amsoil thickened all the way to a 15w40.
quote:
This is it. Amsoil is done! The oil exceeded a year in service, with 14,000 miles on the ticker, and no filter change! Well, if the year hadn't ended, we would have had to change the filter now -- it finally reached our insolubles cap, 2,000 miles after Mobil 1. The main thing that stands out on this, our final Amsoil sample, is the ridiculous viscosity. This 5W30 oil has now thickened out to a 15W40 -- argue whether it matters if you like, but we believe engine builders spec an oil for a reason, and this oil is far, far thicker now than intended for the LS1. Switching to our flush Mobil 1 netted a nearly instant 10% improvement in fuel economy, and the engine runs a heckuva lot smoother too.

I've always been iffy on this whole amsoil thing, and this doesn't make me feel any better.
It's always interesting for me to see data. I guess that is the engineer in me... The problem, in general, is that most investigations do not use statistically valid samples. I realize it is not feasible for a consumer to run tests like this, but "one off" comparisons could have far too many variables to be really valid. I feel, until I see real valid data, that most all synthetics are equivalent within the variations of use. [Can you tell I work with statistics every day?] I currently use Valvoline Synthetic in the cars, but I use Amsoil in my sled. Would I use Amsoil in my car? Absolutely, but it is easier (and a slight bit cheaper) to get the Valvoline. Another thing to consider is the mileage associated with issues. I have seen more than a couple write-ups in the past that indicated synthetic oils are good past 10k miles. I really hope nobody is streching it that far (I change every 5k in the STi and every couple of AutoX/track days in the RS). Anyway, that's my $0.02, but realize I really don't know much about oil... Now if you want to know how a disk drive works, I can go on for hours. )
My knock does go away when it gets warm. I have never had that with previous cars (not Subaru's though). But this is the first winter I have owned both of these Subies. I did put Mobil 1 5W-30 in both of them on Tuesday night, but there has not been a cold enough night since to see if it made a difference.
I thought the only Subaru engines that had piston slap were the few they put 'short skirt pistons' into?
i use Valvoline 5w-30 Napa brand filter YAY! the vlave noise ont eh newer subies is not piston slpa it is actauly the valves. my moms car had the noise so my dad asked the dealer about it. with then newer enginges they changed to a new type of valve system (hydraulic (not sure)). anyway you get he noise tell it warms up but u also get 20 xtra horse. wrx1 how you get amsoil so cheap?
I just changed the oil on my Legacy today. Total cost with oil and filter is about $27, not counting my own labor. It's been 4,205 miles since my last oil change. This time I'm using a Fram Tough Guard oil filter, which is their midrange oil filter (didn't have the top of the line one...) On the box it says it only filters down to 20 microns. How much does the Purolator PureONE filter down to?
quote:
Well, Amsoil, redline and royal purple or the only true 100% synthetic oils on the market. I plan on keeping this Subaru for atleast 150-200k miles so I'm interested in using high quality stuff but at the same time I don't wanna be spending $60 every 3-4k or so on motor oil. How much does Amsoil oil and oil filter cost?
Well, a case of oil is $59 and the filters are $11 each, so for 2 oil changes it would run you about $81. That would also be good for a year for sure, and if you wanted to follow the amsoil change intervals, 2 years. There alot alot of ways to look at he posted info. To do the amsoil 25,000 mile change, they want you to replace the filter at 12,000 miles and top off the oil. If that test went 14,000 miles without a filter change, that is outside the amsoil spec. Now I change the oil in my truck every spring and every fall (6-8000 miles), and depending on how much I beat on my car, I only change it every spring. My car sits all winter, so before it even gets fired up, the old oil is drained, and new oil is installed. If I do some track days, or some good road abuse, I will change the oil a little more frequent. With my car, 6-8000 miles on a oil change, the oil comes out almost as clean as new. Russ
