Ubuntu Users!!! Any Ubuntu users here? If so, how do you like it compare to other OS out there? I'm not a linux guy at all, but this is a bit too simple :biggrin:
I used ubuntu for a while, its one of the better distros out there. I started on redhat 7, moved to SuSE up until Novell tried to buy our company then switched over to Ubuntu then. I think ubuntu is the best overall distro i've used, but the name is freaking terrible.
yes, ubuntu is awesome. the new up-and-coming kid is pc-bsd. haven't had a whole lot of time to play, but looks promising...
If you're unsure, just download the cd-bootable version of it and take it for a test run. Also, give Knopix a try since that one is cd bootable as well. I think Knopix has the added benefit of being able to read ntsf, so you can actually access your files while in linux. I think cd bootlable distros are always worth a try since you can always go back to your old o.s.
in my house, we have 4 computers, all of them are running ubuntu. Ubuntu is great, one of the computers is a file server, one is a web server and the others are personal computers. i have not had any problems so far and it is easy to do.
i started with debian, moved on to redshat, then gentoo. haven't tried ubuntu, but I should probably do that. HAHA I remember when it was new and people were like "wow, what is this??" it has come quite a long way since then as an OS.
Any modern distro can mount your NTFS volumes as read only so you can access your Windows files. The trick is in mounting them RW without trashing the file system. The first distro I used was Yggdrassil Linux in 1993. That was a fun install. And no desktop. You youngsters don't know how good you've got it these days. My favourite is still SuSE; the BMW of Linices. I think the Novell buyout was a good thing for them, since it gave them world class support and marketing, and there seems to have been little interference in the actual product. But I should try Ubuntu one of these days. I do have a spare laptop I could throw it onto... Stuart.
yes, that. I didn't use gnome or kde or any of that stuff for the longest time. when I got away from CLI, I used X and fvwm. It was awesome.
I'm still using SuSe, looking at Ubuntu possibly...probably try it out on another machine before making the switch...
wow, more replies than I thought, which is great I haven't used linux in years and now, with ubuntu, it's helping me get back to it, it's really simple, especially for noobs
I just installed Ubuntu a few weeks ago. Every few years I try again and give linux a chance. I am very impressed with ubuntu so far. With the exception of my sound card not working, this is the first time I've been able to install linux 100% in the gui without having to go into any config files, etc. Which is nice because I just don't have the time these days to hack around with linux like I did in college.
+1 in favor! Based on Debian, my personal favourite, package management rocks. Ubuntu|Kubuntu|Xubuntu did a really good job making it easy to use. Good choice. Waiting for a fresh release here. Had it on my old laptop, new one required 'alternative CD' install and long of list of hardware drivers to update manually. Hopefully in a month I'll get back to it.
WOW, did not think we had that many Linux users. I run mostly Fedora for my regular machines and CentOS for the servers. Ubuntu is, from what I have heard and read, by far the most user friendly especially for media stuff. Fedora is not bad but it is more on the edge than most people want to be (not that it is that cutting edge though). Just download a bunch of live cds and try them all. Only Windblows machines here are the wifes, my new OQO, and the virtual machines I run in Linux once in a while. All my desktops and my laptop are Linux.
So Ubuntu users, how's 7.10 for you? If you aren't an Ubuntu user, why not try it out, it's free! www.ubuntu.com But I suggest you try the livecd first, to see if you like it. If you don't know what you're getting yourself into, get help from someone who knows what they're doing. I guess I'll be dual booting both XP & Ubuntu for now...
Yup. Broke X, keeps respawning gdm processes until it crashes, assuming it's an isolated case tho... Found a fix but it's kind of a quick and dirty hack.
is it me or does 7.10 boots up very slow compare to 7.04 I did 2 fresh installs on fresh hd's and same thing.
Ok, I got it fixed It seems SOME out there have this 'problem', it would take about 2 minutes to boot into Gutsy, which is ridiculous. So now after applying a little fix, it takes about no more than 30 seconds for me to boot into the OS, which is such a big YES for me
haven't noticed slowness like this (the work laptop is a f***** beast!) but would you post the link for the fix?
Ubuntu is a good alternative for Windows for the average user. It's actually fairly intuitive, has some good features, and performs many of the things people need without having to purchase additional software. Oh, and Ubuntu is free, too. Oh, Pros: Free, it's pretty, drivers are fairly easy to find for most hardware, it updates often enough, the community is massive for support and help, and it comes with many programs for usability. Cons: Some drivers are hard/impossible to find, there is a learning curve, and command-line experience is almost necessary.
well linux is a free OS.. IE windows / leapard style... however, looks like windows vista on crack... do a youtube search for ubuntu vs vista... and check it out.

nope. "ubuntu users???" != "Ubuntu Users!!!". Discounting the punctuation, Linux is still case-sensitive ya know.

LOL it's all good, more Ubuntu floating around as I'm typing on my windows <-LOL machine, i'm installing suse onto my notebook, we'll see how that goes
