Uncle Scotty's Cocktail Source

I did the uncle scotty's cocktail in my '02 and really liked it. I want to change the fluid in my '97 as it grinds going into 3rd. I stopped at Checker, Advance Auto, O-reilley's, and Napa and no one had the synchromesh or the HypoyC 80w-90. Anyone have a local source for this?

*1qt Redline lightweight shockproof (already have)
*1qt Pennzoil or GM Synchromesh (need)
*2qt Castrol HypoyC 80w-90. (need)

i found it in the metro area..just cant freakin remember where. it was some where in st. paul at a major retailer.

 

which Napas did you go to, unless its a larger store or like the St. Louis Park store they probably wont have it

 

Pep Boys has hypoy C.
Autozone has Penzoil Synchromesh.

Is that the actual cocktail recipe? I want to put that into my tranny, too.

 

Yeah, Put in 1 quart of redline lightweight shockproof and 1 quart of syncromesh. Then top off with the hypoy c.

There's a bunch more info on nasioc, but I think that's basically it.

I'm planning to try it in my transmission too, I just need to find time to run around to all the places and pick up the ingredients.

 

Yeah, I've been planning on this, too. I've got Red Line 75w90 in there right now.

Are there really only 3 Pep Boys in the Metro area ? Looks like I'll be making a trip out to IGH sometime soon. Fortunately, Courtney Truck Service in Eden Prairie stocks all the Red Line stuff, so that's the easy one to get.

yeah it definitely works for teh 5 speed. i tried it awhile back and never went back to the oem crap

 

Just be thankful you guys even have that stuff within close vicinity. Come try to hunt that stuff down in Roch...

sounds like you could get it down to 2 bottles the first tow and the top off ingredient

prolly not worth the effort though for only a one bottle reduction

I'm thinking more like pre-measuring (Overall fluid capacity - 1 litre of Syncromesh - 1 litre of redline = remainder for hypoy) and selling with the ingredients metered.

 

I was going to suggest that actually. You could mark it up and I would still buy from you just for the ease. I ended up mailordering 4 quarts of the redline lightweight shockproof last year and driving all over hell to find the rest of the stuff.

I wouldn't bother mixing it though.

i could become a redline dealer but not for castrol or pennzoil...not sure where to get the last two cheaply

 

well I ran synthetic... definitely smoother adn easier in winter.. but I switched back to dino after my gears in my rear diff went out after 10K on synth... I am of the school of thought that no synth in gears... my opinion / experience... what its worth.. who cares...

pros and cons for both....

I had a bad experience so I switched.. many others havent ....

 

i got one qt left of the redline in stock, bout 8 qts of the synchromesh in stock(by the way i work at advance auto if you didn't know), and o'riellys typically has the hypo c in stock thats where i got it from

Naw, you can ship via USPS no problems. That's how Blackstone wants all its oil samples sent in. You just have to package it correctly.

 

Redline MTL is the same thing as GM Synchromesh, I have used it in Fiero transmissions with great results, I think its easier to get than syncromesh expecially if you already know where to get the lightweight shockproof.

 

Ah, but does it have Uncle Scotty's seal of approval ? Do you really want to mess with success ?

Syncros as far as I know.

 

the shockproof is what helps the gears, ive been running straight syncromesh for a while now, i get a grind when its really hot in 2nd, but thats only when im hammering gears.

 

LOL... I miss 4 speeds...

Clashing and easy shifting are related to the synchros, normally. A whining from the gears (My first gear, for example...) is indication of the gears grinding each other up. You can get a grind from your differentials, too. Speaking of which, does anyone have recommendations for differential fluids?

Which part to put in the rear diff? I'm pretty sure it's the Redline, but I want to make sure before I blow a few bucks I don't need to.

but the 4-speeds use essentially identical synchro design to the 5MTs. just crappier linkage.

I've switched to the cocktail, and noticed minimal improvement over valvoline 85w90 and rislone.....at double the cost.


that said, O'reilley's here in Duluth had both the pennzoil synchromesh and HypoyC on the shelf

After getting pissed off that I can't find rev on the first, 2nd, or 3rd tries most of the time I think i'll be doing the cocktail this weekend. Car just hit 30k so it couldn't hurt. Sounds like I might be driving all over to find the stuff. Of course the phone works too for me

 

FYI, I just got both the 1qt Pennzoil and 2qt Castrol HypoyC 80w-90 at the pep boys in brooklin center. They had a bunch of the hypoyc stuff and just a couple bottles of the pennzoil. Also for the rear diff they had both moble 1 and royal purple.

I haven't desided yet on what i'm going to throw in my rear. Tossed up between moble 1 (which i ran in my jeep), redline (which I also ran in my jeep and I have about half a bottle that is 4 years old, so I'd have to buy more anyways), or royal purple. When I do my tranny and rear end I plan on doing a full write-up with pictures because I figure it could help the newbies out there.

Synthetic in gear boxes that don't recommend Synthetic...BAD as Nathan found out stick with 80w90 GL5 NON-synthetic. That way,. you only to swap the transmission and diff fluid every 30,000 miles...instead swapping out the entire transmission and rear diff every 10,000. Saves money in the long run

 

Is Redline 75w90ns synthetic?
